The owner and the host who operate “Guest House Oumi” is Tommy san. He is a super warm host who goes the extra mile to make sure guest’s questions, needs are answered and met. He makes a very good egg sandwich for guests to start the day. If you need clothes to be wash and dry, Tommy can provide the service for a small fee (500Yen). He also makes a very good guide book that provide useful info on Kyoto’s attractions and restaurants and cafés around the guest house neighborhood (Nijo/二条) The location of the guest house is quite convenient. It only requires a 3-4min walk to get to Nijo Station. There is a sizeable 100yen shop and a revolving sushi bar restaurant (Kura Sushi) near the guest house and it is a 2 minutes walk.

There is a house rule where lights and loud conservation is not allowed after 9pm because the guest house is situated in a very quiet residential neighborhood. This rule might be an issue for some people, but it was not a problem for me.

Tommy was an exceptional and friendly host. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very supportive in assisting us when we transferred our luggage in advance to the guest house. The check in process was smooth and efficient and he had already taken our luggage to our room upstairs when we arrived! Tommy gave us some great recommendations for food and in the morning prepared us breakfast, which was delicious! The location is ideal and minutes away from the nearest JR station. My boyfriend and I spent 3 weeks in Japan and stayed at lots of different places and this is the experience and place that we will remember the most!

There was nothing to dislike!

Hi there, the facilities its really cool, they have almost everything what you need.they have free water and bathroom. Tommy he's above and beyond providing customer service. Was so happy to stay there, the metro and buses close to our guest house, Tommy thank you for breakfast. Eventually its pretty place to stay for a while.

From the beginning my check, I faced it issue with payment, cause earlier to my travel my payment has been charged. then they asked me to pay again, I was so stressed, even they couldn't explain well, just my mood has been gone. There is no customer service, please the owner, before to provide customer service please learn how to solve the payment things.

I had the best time at this guest house. The host was incredibly welcoming, spoke good english and always asked if he could help me with anything. You can really see and feel that he enjoys doing what he’s doing. He even prepared the breakfast himself in the morning for every guest individually, when it suited them. Like what?! The facilities were all very clean, the bed was comfortable and it was very quiet at night, so perfect for a light sleeper like me. I will definitely stay there on my next trip to Kyoto again.

Tommy the host is very kind and thoughtful, friendly but not intrusive Tommy helped to bring luggage to second floor due to steep stairs Room and shared bathroom/kitchen were spotlessly clean Excellent breakfast sandwiches. Room is in a 95 year old house (it feels historic, yet well kept) Location is in a Japanese neighborhood (does not feel crowded with tourists) Walking distance to Nijo Castle Provided a map to identify key useful areas close by

Nothing that I didn't like

Good overall. The owner is extremely friendly and helpful.

The guesthouse is closed between 12h and 17h for cleaning. It turned out to be quite inconvenient, especially in November when the sundown is at around 17h and you can be exhausted enough before that time because of the visits. I won't lower the score because of that because I was aware of the rule and I expected it to be ok, but honestly I wouldn't choose a accomodation with such a rule again...

Absolutely a 10/10 property. A little far from central areas, but nice and quiet and an easy walk to the JR/Subway station. Very clean, EXCELLENT water pressure in the showers, comfortable beds, and a nice little sitting area for eating or socializing or watching Japanese TV. But (as you’ve read in all the other reviews) Tommy is absolutely the star of the show. One of the most considerate people I’ve ever met, Tommy runs the guesthouse with care and love. He always asks if guests need anything and is quick to help. I truly felt sad to leave and say goodbye!

Property was closed from 12-5, which wasn’t really a problem because there’s so much to do and see in Kyoto. Some guests also might not like that quiet hours start at 9pm, but you can still chat quietly and as an early sleeper this was great for me.

It was marvelous! The guesthouse itself is a treasure in Kyōto situated in a nice, calm area. They provide you with everything you need and loads of information about Kyōto. Tommy-san is an outstanding, friendly and incredibly helpful person you need to get to know! He has such a positive attitude and is one of the kindest people I ever got to know! Definately will come back!

It is quite keen-eared

In a quiet street, the location is really nice. The owner Tommy is incredibly kind! Always makes sure you have everything you need, super helpful. There is a guide in the lounge with spots to see nearby, how to get there etc. The breakfast was really good! I'm a vegetarian and that could be accommodated without a problem. Excellent stay overall.

A bit expensive but I was there on a Saturday night, which often ramps up the prices. Not the closest to the center but it's close to a big subway station.

Tommy (Tomita-san) makes you feel right at home with amazing hospitality. The place is clean, any amenities one may need are available, coffee/tea/water (hot or cold) are available, beds are comfortable. Also nearby Nijo station which connects to Kyoto's metro and train network.

There's really nothing to dislike, although some may find it annoying that you cannot enter the hostel between noon and 5PM, which is quite a long time.
