Perfect location on the water and very walkable to all the major sights. Staff was excellent. They have a translation service for non-Japanese speakers. Shuttle service to the train stations in town.

The food is a traditional Japanese set menu, which was of high quality, but not the best for our Western Kids. Dinner also takes place over 2 hrs, which is tough with younger children. However, you can chose to not select the half-board option.

Fantastic location with spectacular views of Fukuurujima and the bridge. Great to be a little bit removed from the madness of the main strip. A little haven of peace up on the hill. Private onsen was so delightful after walking around the town all day. Food was delicious and definitely take the manager’s recommendations on sake - she knows! The staff were all incredibly helpful and flexible and assisted us in changing our room. A lovely stay in a picturesque location.

Nothing at all!

I've been impressed by Japanese hospitality, but this place brings it up to yet another impressive level. There happened to be international staff, so I was pretty relaxed with speaking English during check-in! They go above by walking you around the hotel and explaining the amenities and room, and will even pull out the futon for you while you're away. Their lounge includes complimentary sake, ice slushies, and assorted beverages. Their public onsen was well maintained. The view from the onsen and from the room is amazing and refreshing. The room can probably sleep a few people. I also enjoyed their private onsen which they offered on check-in. You can pay for one of their available one hour increments. Breakfast is an amazing sit down meal. Would recommend! They also have shuttle services to the pier and two different nearby stations to be reserved in advance. Basics were achieved: Shower pressure was good, WiFi was excellent, No smell.

Their entrance is on top of a hill, so be prepared for a short one minute hike if you're on foot. Some technical difficulties during my private onsen where the music was interrupted. There's only one fan in the public onsen (I personally like air drying).

This ryokan style hotel was one of our best experiences in Japan. The views over the islands of Matsushima were superb - truly one of the 3 great views of Japan! Our room overlooked the famous Fukuurabashi bridge through a picturesque screen of the twisted pine trees that make this view so iconic. The kaiseki style meals were superb - delicious and beautifully presented. Each dish was a delight of discovery, awe and wonder. We enjoyed a private onsen bath with sunset views and also visited each of the other public baths over the next day. The views over the bay are simply stunning.

Our room offers a very nice view of the Matsushima bay area. We could see sunrise from our room. The entire place is very clean and the staff are very warm and friendly. We also like the outdoor foot bath as it allows one to relax and enjoy the view. Seat mat and towel are provided, making it very convenient for us to use.

The dinner was not the most memorable among all the ryokans we stayed at so far. While they use premium ingredients, we found that the way or style they chose to prepare each dish was not compatible with the ingredients used. Breakfast was slightly better. We were also slightly disappointed that the private onsen was fully booked even though we checked in rather on time. Only the female public bath (on day of check-in) offers open air onsen. It will be better if the place offers massage chairs for relaxing.

Our room had a picturesque view of the bay. The outdoor private onsen was superb. It's a short walk from the property to the red bridge connecting to Fukuura island, and also a walking distance to the Entsuin temple complex. Japanese breakfast was delicious. We also enjoyed the outdoor foot bath in the evening. It was an overall lovely ryokan with English-speaking staff.

Wish they had more private onsen rooms for us to choose from. There was barely any restaurant within the property's vicinity open at night. So unless you drive your own car or have booked dinner at the ryokan in advance, better to bring some meals in.

Wonderful experience that was definitely the highlight of this trip. Very spacious and comfortable room. Great bath. Professional and courteous staff. By mistake I forgot to book dinner, but they were able to accommodate me at the last minute - and the food was exceptional. And the views are even better in person.

The curtains in the room didn't block the morning sun particularly well. It's a bit of a walk from the station so do make sure to use the shuttle bus service.

The view the room was outstanding! The staff members went above and beyond to help us. My wife has celiac disease and needed special care to be taken with meals and they did an amazing job of providing 2 very large and intricate safe meals each day with no issue.

In brief—food options for kids are limited. While our food was fantastic and varied, there was limited meal support from the kitchen for our 2 and a half year old. They offered rice and miso soup for her—which was fine the first time but she refused it the second and third days. My only suggestion is that there should be some more basic meal options for kids to have some choice—like fresh veggies and fruits, perhaps noodles to choose from. There were lots of families there so I think it would benefit many guests.

Excellent location within walking distance of key attractions. Beautiful view of bay from room and onsen. Excellent service with staff using technology like AI translator to serve you better. Room is thoughtfully furnished with remote control for the lights so that you need not get up from futon. Amenities were great too - hair scrunchie, face care kit etc.

What a fantastic place to stay. Incredible staff, food, onsen, views, rooms! I loved it. I ate one of the most memorable meals of my life, and loved the tatami room. Private onsen maybe wasn't worth it considering hardly anyone was at the others when I was there, but it was very nice and no regrets! I do wish I had got the slow train from Sendai instead of the fast train, to see the seaside and arrive better situated in relation to the hotel. But that's my fault, but the hotel's! It had great access for some lovely sights, and when the rain started, I just enjoyed the onsen.

The pillow. But then, I hate most pillows in western hotel rooms too, for different reasons. I guess I'm always searching for that Goldilocks pillow.
