Fantastic location for every military buff out there, or anyone else with an interest into Nordic history who would like to visit the fortress and relive the events that changed the history and the fate of three Nordic countries. The fortress itself is rather extensive, with a beautiful view, and well restored and kept. And no entrance fee. As for the hotel, it is spotlessly clean, modest, but great in the Scandinavian way, pro, but welcoming and friendly staff, and the hotel restaurant proved far above what you would expect. Not bad at all. One of the more welcoming military camps I have been to, I must say. And, I really enjoyed the architecture, one of Norway's great architects beeing behind it.

Bag trolleys could have been available at the front desk as we don't have bell boys around anymore. And, some of it are not

The location is fantastic, overlooking the town of Halden with short walking distance to the fort. Lots of little viewpoints around the hotel itself too, and grassy areas for kids. Plenty of parking, free of course. We had the family room which was a huge lounge area with a double bed hidden privately behind a dividing wall type thing, plus another room with two single beds. Huge windows that open, black-out blinds, and high ceilings. Bit of a luxury feel. Nice modern shower and bathroom too. On site restaurant was I’d say slightly middle to top end in prices and choice, they don’t cater to families which was fine. Burgers were actually incredibly tasty. Very quiet there, and aircon in the restaurant which we needed in the 30°c heat. Ukrainian woman serving was really friendly and helpful!

Needed a fridge. But reception will fill your cold thermos for you. Not much else going on in the hotel. Everything seemed to be run on a ghost crew in mid-summer. Our nights sleep was disturbed by what can only be described as the scene from The Lost Boys where they drive around the house on motorbikes shining lights through the windows. We had local youth seemingly driving around the hotel in circles on stupidly, making incredible noise, this went on from 11pm til about 12:15. It woke my kids. Can’t blame the hotel, but can nothing be done about locals directly outside the hotel causing a racket? It was like British council estate youth just turned up.

Wonderful place, excellent breakfast, and the location is just perfect to rest and walk around the fortress after a long drive.

It was 26 degrees in the room when I arrived, but only 17 outside. I wanted to open the window, but the hotel installed an absolutely idiotic safety measure that only allows you to open the window a few centimeters wide. It made no difference at all. I was boiled alive. I strongly urge you to reconsider and let guests open the windows normally, especially since you don't have AC.

Amazing, absolutely crazy delicious breakfast. Best hotel breakfast I have had in a looong time. Everything was really tasty, but also local, sustainable and ethically farmed, love it. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The location had you right by Festningen, so beautiful surroundings, but still easy to get into town.

The room was not very cozy, especially with the bleak colour scheme and high ceiling, and the bathroom felt a bit shabby even though it was well cleaned.

A nice hotel with a beautiful view of Halden. A cozy terrace where you can enjoy sunset with a glass of wine. Quiet surroundings with a good parking place. The staff was very polite and helpful.

For some reason all rooms were equipped with feather lamps. Probably not important for almost everybody but if you are allergic to that it can matter very much. There should be a couple of rooms available without that. Anyway the staff understood our problem and we were allowed to remove that thing from the room.

Fredriksten Hotell is a very unique facility, situated adjacent to the Fortress, and overlooking the city. Because the hotel is a converted military facility, it has an institutional feel, yet it is charming. Everyone was kind and helpful, and spoke excellent English. We were make to feel welcomed.

All of the hotel staff were wonderful and helpful, and the breakfast magnificent! There was nothing to not like.

Room was comfortable and stylish. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good and the restaurant served a high quality dinner.

We found it hard to locate the hotel entrance and needed to ask. It's on an eminence a bit away from the town - easy to walk down the hill, harder to walk up. Shower was a bit small. Provision of an electric jug for making tea would be an enhancement.

2nd time in this hotel, I came back for the location, food & friendly staff. Again was pleasantly surprised like the 1st time! The hotel is such an overlooked gem with the Fredriksten fort right next door.

Stayed overnight travelling from Norway to Sweden and the location was convenient as just 10 mins from E6. Driving up to the hotel provides great views of the fortress. Nice outdoor areas to enjoy the sunset. The room was spacious and modern. Free parking.
