We loved the historic location, which was so much more than we’d expected with the medieval castle mound as well as the tower house. Breakfast was delicious and served in the atmospheric Great Hall. We booked dinner on the first night and were so glad we did - not only was it delicious but we had a dining room to ourselves in the castle tower. It was a special experience. We were blessed with amazing weather to enjoy the castle gardens and the hot tub with its views of the countryside. The adjoining farm had its Beltie coos out in the field like they were on display for us - despite the fact that they are the region’s signature cattle breed we’ve found it’s fairly rare to see them in Galloway fields.
The ‘box bed’ was a bit tricky if you were on the inside and had to get up in the middle of the night …

This is an amazing place. It is quintessential family estate. Do not expect modern furnishings, state of the art bathrooms, wall mounted TVs, an absence of cobwebs, level floors. But, if you want an exceptional welcome, an honest to goodness unique experience and a taste of history coupled with a comfy bed, absence of light pollution and an appreciation of a life before overwhelming tech- couldn’t recommend more highly. After a sound sleep, it was great to start the day with a delicious breakfast served in the courtyard dining room steeped in history. We loved it.
The bathrooms could be improved, the cobwebs could be fewer, the windows could be cleaner. But quite honestly, all those things would detract from what it is, because this is stepping back in time, immersing in history, feeling a sense of ancestry and appreciating that times past should not be forgotten or swept away.

I honestly could not recommend this place enough - the pictures simply don't do it justice! Not only was the setting absolutely stunning, but Tobias was a fantastic host, the food was superb, and everything was so thoughtfully curated for our stay. It was in an excellent location - far enough into the countryside to feel relaxed and remote, but within a few minutes to the nearest town, and with places like Gretna Green (and even the Lake District) within a couple of hours drive! The bedrooms were so unique, and so comfortable, and the amenities like the hot tub were just spot on. Thank you for a brilliant stay, we will definitely be back.

I had a great stay. Warmly welcomed by the host. The bed in the Lady Maxwell room is extremely comfortable with good quality linen so I slept very well. Breakfast was served in the room by the host, as I had my dog staying with me, and it was lovely. There is a short walk down by the river for the dog and a nice, more strenuous walk up the track. Exceptionally quiet and chilled place, full of character and charm.
Over time perhaps the shower could be improved, but it did not detract from my stay at all, and would not affect my recommendation or indeed having a return visit.

Location of considerable interest: sent both my wife and myself to the internet to find out more of the history of the place and of our hosts’ efforts to restore and provide value. Dinner a little disappointing; not enough choice and fare a little unusual. Quantities a little excessive for seniors. Dining room a little chilly. Breakfast fine. Particularly impressive was the courtesy and attentiveness of our host. A most unusual overnight stay.
See above. It would have been nice if the guide provided in the room had been offered for purchase at reasonable cost.

We just got back from a night away at Buittle Castle and it was beautiful. Tobias greeted us on arrival, plenty of parking and he was the most attentive host, nothing was too much trouble for him. We stayed in the Lady Maxwell room and it was really quirky and the decor was gorgeous and traditional. Comfy bed, tea and coffee making facilities, beautiful views out the window. We dined at the Laurie Arms which was a quaint pub down the road, really friendly and lovely food. We came back to the outdoor hot tub which Tobias had heated and prepared for us, where we immersed ourselves into some star gazing and relaxation. Lovely and warm when we went back to our room, pipes were on and shower was lovely and hot. We had a full Scottish breakfast the next morning all home cooked, it was lovely, good portion sizes accompanied by coffee and toast. For the price and location, it really was amazing value for money and would not hesitate to go back again.
Nothing at all. Just a point to make: There is no TV in the Lady Maxwell room. This may not be to everyone's choice, however it suited us as we wanted to escape the usual routine and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Set in a beautiful location, this unique property is undergoing renovation which is ongoing and has been done very tastefully. The room is spacious, yet cosy with a big comfy bed. The host was very welcoming with great communication beforehand and very helpful during my stay. Breakfast was plentiful and freshly cooked. I ate in the Great Hall which is fabulous, but you can have it delivered to your room if you prefer. Good wifi which was important as I stayed here in a work trip, no issues streaming or accessing my work files.
Watch out for the hairpin bend when coming off the main road on arrival, it's very tight

We truly loved our stay, no more than our two spaniels. Tobias was an incredible host. We have never visited such a dog friendly place. Our room was beautiful, great care and attention has been given to the decoration and furnishings. I liked the fresh flowers and coffee machine as well as the Scottish breakfast that was served each morning in the room, with a pot of fresh coffee. The communication throughout the booking was brilliant. Tobias was warm and welcoming. It’s a very peaceful and quiet venue. The grounds are lovely to walk around. Our dogs just loved it.
Nothing. Really didn’t want to go.
