Free on-site parking lot. Great location and a comfortable private room. Staff were helpful and the shared spaces were extremely clean and organized.

There are no towels provided, so you must rent them for a very small cost. The showers have limited time nozzles, so you have to keep pushing the handle while you shower. The walls are very thin, so you can even hear people walking back and forth in the morning.

Location is great, walking distance from the Aso station where the bus depart to Aso crater. Konbini nearby. Big shared space to eat and great kitchen with all you need to cook. Books to read even in English. Rooms were great very clean, very convenient. I felt at ease here. Many people but very respectful about the noise. You can leave your luggage before check in.

Everything was great

The staff is friendly and helpful to answer all the questions you might have. The location is near the train stations, which is easy to take the public transportation. The common area is where you can meet and chat other travelers and share your stories with each others. You can also put your luggages into the safe place even after checking out.

There is no public bath inside the building. You can either go to the nearby public bath or take the shower in the shared bathrooms on the second floor of the building.

Aso Base Backpackers is truly a gem. The location is perfect, a few minutes walk from a really cute train station. The accommodation is spotless and very well set up, with excellent kitchen facilities and a nice place to eat and relax. The bunk beds were really comfortable. The staff were helpful and welcoming. There's a wonderful community onsen close by, well worth a visit.

It’s really cute, quirky and makes you feel like you are home. Lawson round the corner. Not many restaurants/cafes nearby.

The staff made the place feel a little cold and lacked warmth. They were very strict with leaving as soon as you checked out and not being there before you check in. Other hostels in Japan have been a little more accommodating.

Staff are helpful. There is a luggage room for keeping your bags if you are earlier than the checkin time. The location is very close to the train station and bus stop, super convenient. Hostel is nicely decorated and clean. There is an onsen close to the station and the hostel offers a discount ticket.

There are no curtains for the beds, which may bother some people. There is a railing to hang clothes if you are on the top bunk, which can function as a curtain. The doorway between dorm rooms is just a curtain, so if guests in the dorm room next door are loud you can hear them.

The guesthouse was extremely clean and had great facilities. It's close to Aso train/ bus station so it's in a great location for visiting Mt Aso.

It might be helpful to know before arriving that you cannot access the guesthouse before check-in at 4pm and after checkout at 10:30am. There's a luggage storage room with lockers so it's not an issue though.

As an older couple cycling through Japan, this hostel had everything we needed. An excellent self-catering kitchen and a private room with a Queen bed delivered us comfort for our visit to Mt Aso. The staff were particularly helpful and spoke good English which was an advantage to us. Less expensive than a hotel but with more amenity for us with the opportunity to converse with fellow travellers, this was the perfect place for us to stay.

Japan is very safe but we would have liked more secure under cover storage for our bicycles.

The fact that everything was set to the millimeter made me wonder why basic things like curtains on dorm beds and napkins to wipe hands were not there.

This is one of the most charming, cleanest, safest, and friendliest backpacking hostels I've ever stayed at. The staff was so helpful and obliging. The beds were clean and the storage secure. I stayed here on a whim after forgetting to plan one night's stay, and I'm so glad I did! I would visit again.

There was nothing I was unhappy about. This was the same price per night as a hostel I stayed at in Osaka, and this place was FAR better. I'd recommend it to any solo traveler.
