Mafute was a wonderful hostess: friendly, welcoming and helpful. The breakfast selection was extensive and very tasty. Southey House exceeded my expectations - it felt more like a retreat/ spa than a B&B. The decor and furnishings are elegant, yet homely. I enjoyed a drink while taking in the view from the super comfy verandah sofa. The bed was wonderfully comfortable and the electric blanket was a boon, as was the freestanding bath. Coffee, tea, sugar, a kettle, bar fridge, tv and desk added to the room's convenience.

Just three VERY MINOR things: a little bit of milk in the room and some soap, shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom would have been nice additions. The bath plug does not seal properly, so I was unfortunately unable to luxuriate in that glorious bath.

A delicious breakfast with so many options. Fresh fruit salad, creamy yoghurt, Muesli, dried cranberries, toast and a range of jams and spreads plus the option of a wonderful range of extras with a full English breakfast, cooked to perfection.

We couldn't fault them in any way! Precious was charming and attentive, making us a takeaway breakfast when we had to leave early on our first morning to get to a conference. We will definitely be back if we ever go to KZN again.

Charming guesthouse, like an old colonial plantation house. Full of character and beautifully furnished. Exceptional view. Outstanding and welcoming staff. Came away with a really nice feeling. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Tea/coffee facilities in the rooms were limited, and breakfast coffee was limited to plunger coffee, but breakfast itself was delicious. It's not a complaint, rather just what I like.

Beautiful B & B, spotlessly clean with a wonderful view, excellent breakfast(you can choose from a menu), close proximity to shops, restaurants, banks,etc and good security. I mean every word but for me it was the wonderful, kind and caring staff. The ladies were exceptional and Yvonne listened to my needs and kept in touch to provide me with accommodation. I had travelled to Durban as my mum was in ICU, sadly she passed after a week and I was fortunate to have a haven to go to in such an awful circumstance. I would go back to every time if I was to return to Durban. Highly recommended. Thank you Yvonne and team.

We were hosted by Mafuti during our stay. She is an absolute darling. So friendly and attentive. Made us really great breakfasts and when we had special requests so was on point. The place was comfortable and clean. The porch area has an amazing view. We really enjoyed our mornings and evenings on the couches. The area is peaceful and serene. Will definitely stay again.

I expected the bedroom with the view over Durban, coming from the UK and being a 'couple', I was very disappointed that we got the much smaller room with no view, where the room I thought we would have was occupied by a single person, and for only one night, whereas I had booked for 2 nights. So feel that we should have been given priority. We had to travel from Johannesburg and got stuck in the Pietermaritzburg traffic jam, and was late arriving, but I had phoned to let the establishment be aware of our plight. For that reason I have not given it 5 * rate ... But we were very well looked after. Still, the disappointment that we did not get the room I had expected, for the amount of money we paid is still a sore point with me.

The smaller room

Loved the location. The house is stunning. I also like that breakfast is included especially when you are traveling for work. The sunset view from the veranda with complimentary sherry is awesome

The room can do with a good deep cleaning.

Breakfast was very good. The rooms were spacious and clean with good quality bedding! Staff were accommodating and very helpful. The view is beautiful and located in quiet street.

Lovely position in Kloof. Good breakfast and staff were v helpful.

Needs a bit of TLC. Lighting in bathroom hard to find. Concerned about the extension plug arrangements - three plugged into one socket?
