The Welldiggers Arms is a 17th-century inn that has been sympathetically and efficiently modernised, and the result is a charming country pub whose 14 en-suite bedrooms are comfortable and clean. Mine - Algie Moss, named after a much loved and now dead local farmer who I am reliably informed used to milk his house-cow by hand, sitting on a three-legged stool, and cut his corn with a binder - was also agreeably spacious. I was not able to try dinner during my one-night stay, but the Full English Breakfast I had the next morning was top-notch, the sausages particularly tasty and the coffee also very good. Finally, the view from the restaurant is truly wonderful, as the snap I have attached will attest: a glorious vista across open fields and hedgerows to the rolling South Downs beyond.

I paid £242.25 for one night's bed and breakfast, which is about £50 more than I would term excellent value, but I am nit-picking because everything else about the Welldiggers Arms is superb.

We stayed here for 1 night and it was a perfect stay for the 3 of us! They placed a cot for our 1 year old daughter without charge. We also had dinner here, the view in the restaurant is amazing. Romp steak was on chewier side but the chicken roast was very scrumptious! The room was clean and it has real cottage vibe which we loved. Breakfast was also very decent with very friendly staff.

The room can get stuffy because there’s no AC, and it was only 20degrees outside. We didn’t want to open the window while sleeping because of the roadway noice. Sometimes you can feel the room shake when a truck drive by. Didn’t bother us that much though.

The Welldiggers Arms is set about 5 minutes drive from Petworth town. It is a very traditional style property that has a lovely, cozy bar area and a larger, spacious restaurant area that extends outside for when the weather is fine. It commands a wonderful view of the neighbouring countryside. All the staff are extremely attentive and friendly, especially Jason, who we believe is the manager, lead by example, and went out of his way to ensure we were looked after. We stayed for the night. The room was very clean, with a comfortable bed and a large bathroom. There was tea and coffee in the room. Also free WiFi. Many thanks, we look forward to returning.

We had a garden room which had lovely views across the fields. It was a lovely room with a big, comfortable bed. Pub was lovely, good food and staff very friendly.

The lighting in the room and bathroom very poor. In the evening, when you are getting ready, there was only the main light and wall lights which were all very dim. Nice for atmosphere but no good for getting ready. (Practically dark!). I had to use my phone torch! Just needs a bright light on the dressing table or change the bulbs to dimmable so you have a choice of how light the room is. Also our room was next to the main boiler room so it was a little noisy but didn’t spoil our stay.

What did you like? We liked everything from the minute we arrived. Great parking, friendly staff as soon as we came through the door. Not only are the staff well trained in first class customer service, they are naturally friendly, polite and fun! Such a relaxed atmosphere; warm and welcoming. As it was my husband's birthday, they very kindly upgraded us (we did not ask, it was offered) and our room was lovely. The bed was one of the most comfortable we have slept in and we made use of the bath at the foot of the bed! We ate Sunday roast; food was great and the restaurant staff were so attentive and our waitress was fabulous! Gold stars all round! My husband went to breakfast but I didn't, however, the staff sent up a little continental breakfast for me to have on our travels. We would most certainly, confidently, recommend The Welldiggers Arms and look forward to a future stay.

We wish we could have eaten a little later on the Sunday evening, but appreciated the kitchen closed early, as it was a Sunday. Other than that, we had no issues at all.

Beautiful room with plenty of space for the dog and a nice outdoor patio with fabulous countryside views. Super comfy beds and pillows and lovely bathroom. Food was excellent (both dinner and breakfast) and the staff were so lovely. The bar area was really cosy and comfortable especially by the log burner and the restaurant had amazing views too. Loved everything about this place.

The rooms (garden rooms 1-4) weren’t very soundproof so we were woken up late at night by the people in the room next door’s phone ringing and then hearing their whole phone conversation and then could hear people the other side talking and using hairdryer. Shame as other than that everything was perfect but soundproofing in accommodation is really a must for a restful stay.

When we booked we booked the 'classic double' but got the 'snug'.....and it was snug! The bed was very comfy and room very clean. Bathroom a great size and underfloor heating. Very generous with the toiletries! There was tea/coffee making facilities and cookies. Tea/coffee a bit 'mean' but we had a cup of tea in the evening (stayed the night and had breakfast so not toooo much of a problem). The pub is LOVELY and the staff are terrific. We had a nice meal and and a nice breakfast. Its just outside of Petworth and the views from the restaurant are lovely.

Could have had a few more tea bags but not a big problem. The TV had a line that was continuously along the bottom of the screen but we didn't go to watch tv. The cabinet that the tv was on seemed to be all scratched......so just some tiny things that made this an 8 rather than higher score. We would recommend staying there tho as was good value for money and the staff and location are terrific.

Nice rural location overlooking fields. Courtyard room very nice with everything to make you feel comfortable. Lovely toiletries and fab breakfast. Evening meals very nice also. Room very clean and comfortable.

The shower is over the bath and both the bed and bath were very high - O.K. for us but older customers would struggle to get in and out (particularly the bath). Pity no biscuits in the room although did have nice tea and coffee cafetière. Location was nice but our room was next to the fast (60mph) road, so noise and fast traffic was unfortunate (dog didn't like walking between car park and room/ restaurant).

Our room (1) was adjacent to the plant room and there was a humming/buzzing noise constantly (although earplugs were provided so clearly this is acknowledged) Lighting was a bit poor, fine for ambience but need some decent lighting for makeup, contact lenses etc! Maybe the upcoming refurbishment will rectify these issues. Everything else was excellent.

Great location just outside Petworth. The property overlooks fields at the back with great views. Very atmospheric inside the pub with low ceilings. All staff very friendly. Evening meal was good although my wifes fish dish was a bit mean! Breakfast was very good. Our bedroom overlooked the fields at the back and had a small terrace with table and chairs. Room good size and bed very comfy.

Bathroom was too small although the shower was a good size. Bathroom sink was in the bedroom and not the bathroom. Dogs, Dogs, Dogs. This is a dog friendly pub but some owners struggle to control them and stop them barking. We dont dislike dogs but we are not in favour of having them in the restaurant when we are eating . Dogs in the next bedroom to us woke us up at 4.45 am barking. Didnt last long but we had a job getting back to sleep. When we checked out I gave the manager a tip but hadn't realised that a tip had been added to our bill already. This was sent to me by email and so I did not realise until I got home. My fault for not checking.
