The fact we were returning to this hotel for the fourth time and as we left rebooked for October is the clearest indication of our feelings about this hotel. We’ve always loved it. It marks a good stopping point for our journey between Notts and Skye. We love that we feel so immediately at ease and comfortable. The rooms are lovely , the food very good and the staff delightful ( Amy is particular helpful and friendly). We have family in the area and it is a mark of the high esteem that is held in locally that my uncle is having a big birthday lunch there in October. Thornhill itself is delightful and the hotel very centrally situated. Warmly recommended.

Very well located. I arrived late on a wet Friday evening and the place was humming - full of locals and guests having a good time. Had to leave straight after a large, and good, breakfast the next morning so did not get to spend much time in the hotel. But the best bit was yet to come. It took me until Monday morning to work out I had left an iPad in my room. I rang the hotel and was expecting the usual run around. But Amy on reception could not have been more helpful and efficient. She arranged to get it sent back to me, initially at her own expense because the person with access to their accounts was away. I have paid her back and will stay again. Very personal service.

The bed was super comfortable, and all the hotel staff made me feel very welcome. The restaurant serves really good breakfasts and dinners. I would definitely stay here again.

The temperature of the shower was very hard to control- ( too hot!). But I didn’t report this. However, given that the staff worked really hard to make my stay perfect, I think if I had reported the problem with shower, this would have been sorted out.

Room was basic but clean and bed was comfortable. Staff were lovely and couldn’t do enough for you, very polite and excellent service. Our evening meal in the restaurant with friends was lovely and we both enjoyed breakfast the following morning. Bathroom is lovely, large and modern with a good quality shower. Good location and we got a free parking space right next to the hotel.

Rooms could be updated and I think £20-30 cheaper per night, in line with a travel lodge, etc, would be a more realistic price for what you get.

Lovely looking building, very quirky inside. The lady looking after the desk was accommodating, friendly and very helpful, even though experiencing a busy night. The en-suite bathroom was lovely and very well equipped!

The staircase smelled funny, this could have been due to food smells emanating from the kitchen. Our extra foldout bed had a missing strut and a broken strut in the middle. One of our party had an uncomfortable sleep on a very thin mattress on the floor. And being a top floor room it was too hot at night to sleep soundly, even with the fan on and windows open.

Fantastic atmosphere and well trained, friendly staff. Traditional scottish hospitality without the cliche tourist tartan / highland cow / stag, etc. Great food, especially local beef and game. Comfortable room for 2 humans and 2 dogs.

Breakfast buffet a bit of a let down: industrial jams and honey? Full breakfast was good though for those that can have a full meal the day after a big dinner.

We had one of the two outside annexes which are spacious and clean with excellent modern toilet and shower facilities, a king size bed and two comfortable armchairs plus a table. Parking for these is just outside which is very handy when packing and unpacking. The annexes are dog friendly and dogs are also allowed in one part of the dining room in the main building. The atmosphere is relaxed but always helpful, the food is tasty and reasonably priced. We have often stayed in the Buccleuch over the years while travelling to Scotland and back and it never disappoints. This is one of our favourite hotels.

Nothing to complain about.

We booked a superior double room. On entry the hotel is a bit tired and dated looking, however staff are warm, welcoming and friendly. Our room was large with a huge comfortable bed. The bathroom is modern with both bath and excellent shower. We had a very enjoyable dinner from a good varied menu, in the hotel restaurant. Cooked breakfast was lovely.

Although it was not an issue for me, perhaps thicker window curtains to block the streetlight light as my partner prefers to sleep in a darkened room

Excellent bedroom with extremely comfortable bed. Great big walk-in shower and a separate bath. The hotel staff were all extremely welcoming and friendly and our dinner was delicious! Happy to recommend the BQA for all of the above and its location with Dumfriesshire - so good for exploring in all directions.

Excellent friendly staff. When we arrived the young woman at reception ascertained that the room we had booked would be unsuitable as it was on the 2nd floor which I hadn’t realised. She offered us the same room on the ground floor which was so lovely and suited us just fine. We had to cut our stay short as my husband became unwell and the manager kindly told us how we could get a refund on the second night stay which I didn’t think would happen as it had been paid already. Great customer service
