A Serene Gem on the NC500 – Perfect in Every Way We had an incredible stay at The Tongue Hotel while touring the NC500. The setting is absolutely stunning – the building itself is full of charm and character, surrounded by peaceful, scenic views that perfectly capture the beauty of the Highlands. There was ideal parking for our two Caterhams, which made things super convenient. We were running late for check-in, and despite arriving after the restaurant had closed, the staff went above and beyond to prepare us a late meal – something we were so grateful for after a long day on the road. The staff truly make this place shine – warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. Every part of the hotel impressed us: the bedrooms were cosy and well-appointed, the bar had a great atmosphere, and the restaurant served top-notch food. An absolute must-stop for anyone doing the NC500 – can’t recommend it highly enough.!

Leaving.

The location and the staff were great. Very welcoming. Couldn't do enough for you. Owen on the bar is a credit to you. Chatty and kept us entertained. Room was a good size and we slept really well. We ate in the restaurant and the food was hot and delicious, although a little pricey.

Thicker curtains would have been better as very light early and woke us. The breakfast was a let down. The choices were great but the cooked breakfast was not good. Cold uncooked bacon (inedible) missing beans and haggis which was rectified straight away after being pointed out. The mushroom was cold and the black pudding was over cooked, very crispy. I was disappointing as we had enjoyed our evening meal so much.

One night only - certainly an accommodation one would like to spend some more time at. The room was spacious enough, bathroom modern and practical with amenities. Good light in the bathroom, especially good for a daily shaving man . Window could be opened and it was quiet at night. Comfy bed with a decent size. Very clean. We had both dinner and breakfast - and both times it was fabulous! Staff helpful and friendly. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

The shower was equipped with a power-shower - not our favourite solution. But it worked reasonably well. Not enough hooks.

Excellent location and view from the room. The room was very clean, neat and tidy but overcomplicated kettle! The overall atmosphere and surrounding area were excellent.

Very overpriced food in the restaurant. It wasn't that busy and we waited nearly an hour for two main courses, one of which we sent back as not what we had ordered. Lots of mistakes made by the restaurant staff, wrong drinks, wrong food, missed parts of meals which lead to a poor experience. Overall the value for money for what you get in the restaurant was very poor, £32 for 2 pieces of lamb and some tiny cubes of vegetables seems very overpriced.

A really comfortable place to stay. Great staff that went about their jobs extremely well. Food was really good and a decent selection of drinks were available at the bar. The room was clean and well decorated as was the rest of the hotel. Its location is easy to find and once there, the lovely view is the first thing that greets you.

Parking is slightly restricted. It worked out fine for me, but the perpendicular parking to the road might put some off, especially if the hotel becomes much busier. I realise there's probably not any other option than the way it is, but like I said, it didn't cause any issue for my stay.

Hotel very old worldly and very Scottish. Great location for people traveling the NC500. Most staff was lovely, but person at reception was totally disinterested. Went through the motions without any further interaction. Made no eye contact. Didn’t eat in restaurant but had drinks in the bar. Staff there were very friendly and social. Would definitely stay again.

Shower massive but hot water regulator not great. Little pressure so had to stay close to the wall to shower. Wasn’t a big thing but seemed a shame considering the very generous size of the actual shower.

Lovely tradition hotel in a good location, the room was a good size with traditional furniture clean and well presented. Lovely tea and coffee making facilities available with complementary biscuits also complementary bottled water and small spirit drink (nice touch but I didn’t indulge as I don’t like spirits) Room was quiet and the bed was comfortable. Vegetarian breakfast was excellent and the staff very friendly and accommodating.

The available plug socket for the kettle was located behind the heavy bedside cupboard and difficult to get to. Tea, coffee and sugar were provided but no milk was available in the room but only discovered this at 05.30 so didn’t think anyone would be around to provide milk at that time. I had booked to eat at the restaurant and was really looking forward to a nice meal after traveling all day but sadly the vegetarian option was very limited. Although the butternut squash soup and mushrooms risotto was tasty the price was quite expensive for a standard two course meal and glass of wine.

Rooms were very tastefully decorated and huge. They were also spotlessly clean. The staff were very welcoming and professional and a huge shout out to the young Kiwi couple working in the restaurant!

Only criticism was that even tho the restaurant didn't seem that busy, too many of the dinner options weren't available on what is quite a small menu (4 starters, 4 mains). There were also no overly healthy options. I opted for a beetroot risotto to find out it also wasn't available and was replaced with a mushroom risotto. The taste was ok but it was very gluggy and the mushrooms tinned and it's never a good idea to put salad leaves on top of a hot dish. Less is more ... the mackerel pate didn't need the pickled beetroot underneath or the tinned pineapple around the plate, the pate which was delicious was fine just with the crostini and a few leaves.

Convenient on the NC500 route Warm and cosy rooms on arrival, nice bath and shower. Enjoyed the touch of the drawer that had kettle/tea/coffee etc Lovely staff

We didn’t book dinner as we ate before arrival, however did have breakfast included. Cooked breakfast was a bit dry - we didn’t rate the breakfast very much after hearing mixed reviews. Bed was quite uncomfortable (I know this is personal choice) however the headboard was quite sore when trying to lie and watch TV Constant draft coming from under the door (we had to put a towel down to prevent it making our room cold during the night) For the price we paid, considering it was out of season (Feb) I expected more.

Nice hotel, comfortable traditional but modern furnishings. Nice toiletries. Luxurious towels and bedding. Small evening dinner menu but everything we had was delicious and the restaurant staff were very pleasant. Nice pre dinner aperitif in room.

I felt the throw on the bed was worn. The gentlemen who met us on arrival was fine but not overly welcoming, could have been a warmer welcome. We would return and adked for prices but werent allowed to be given prices of booking direct, can only check on website, seemed crazy when we were actually standing in reception
