The village of Penola is the best place to stay for access to the Coonawarra valley wineries. It's quaint and quiet. It's the hometown of Australia's only Catholic saint, Mary MacKillop, whose legacy is celebrated in a small museum. It has some historic buidlings and a thriving "hotel" tavern. The chief attraction for us, however, was the small restaurant called PIPERS OF PENOLA, an unexpectedly elegant boutique that attracts "foodies" from near and far. I'll venture to say it's the best restuarant between Adelaide and Melbourne. The Balnaves 'cellar door' just west of Penola is excellent. The Alexander Cameron isn't prepossessing from the outside but the rooms have been modernized and are well maintained. Our suite was clean and comfy; one can't expect more from an outback motel.

Don't expect much from the 'breakfast' in your suite.

Alexander Cameron is a pleasant comfortable hotel. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The proprietors were friendly. Small things irked me in view of its 4 star rating. For example there were no tissues, the toilet paper dispensed small thin sheet at a time ie not a roll and there was no hair conditioner. Obviously these are only minor things but given that of the 4 accommodation places we stayed at on our road trip, this was the most expensive I would expect some minor luxuries

What a great stay. Friendly staff, amazing location to walk to historic area and shops and pubs. These rooms are so comfortable. There is everything you need including breakfast!! A wonderful breakfast basket of cereal, juice, bread, milk etc was included in the price!! So thoughtful. We left early so took our breakfast with us to have along the way. This is rare and such a great touch which was much appreciated especially when leaving early. This also is the only motel or hotel that provides makeup remover wipes! Many hotels stop supplying face washers because of staining. This motel even has a dedicated washer for makeup!! Many little touches that make for a great customer experience.

We could not find any fault.

Clean and spacious, well located, would only suggest perhaps a couch in the room? Not sure if present in other rooms but plenty of space and other than the bed and some 'kitchen ' chairs there is nowhere to comfortably sit inside and it can get very hot outside. We have stayed here several times and will continue to enjoy the hospitality

Proximity to everything in town of Penola. Beside supermarket and 5 minutes walk from local pub. Breakfast provided as part of booking. Friendly hosts. Service good.

No extra dishes etc to allow for use of microwave so limited to eating out. Only 2 each of plates and cutlery and limited space in kitchenette area.

The room was very spacious and comfortable, nicely fitted out, well maintained and clean. Ditto the bathroom. The grounds are attractive and quiet. The location is excellent for walking to all the town attractions of Penola. The breakfast in room offerings was nicely done. Reception staff were friendly and efficient.

A small matter but one adult of us two had to have the "kiddy" cereal offering.

Great location, quiet and easy to walk into town. Nice touch to supply continental breakfast and bottled water. We sat out in the courtyard for lunch one day, very pleasant.

Nice to have the back door and little sitting area in the king rooms, But, not so private, as people could walk along - meant the door needed to stay locked and curtains drawn when needing privacy.

The room was great! So spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable for the one night we stayed. Loved having the separate makeup remover face washer so as not to ruin the white ones! The staff were fantastic - friendly and accommodating. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast really nice. Parking was good and the location walking distance to shops and pubs. Have already recommended Alexander Cameron Suites to family and friends when they come to Penola.

So spacious and clean. Lovely staff. Easy self serve breakfast and plenty of choice and great that we could have when we wanted. Great outdoor area where we could get together with friends in next room. Could walk to the pub for dinner.

Nothing we didn’t like . However as bathroom had two doors (one from each bedroom) only one locked from inside so maybe you could change other doorknob to one that locks as well 🤗

Very impressed with this motel. The rooms are larger than average and very well laid out. Spotlessly clean. The kitchenette is practical and had everything we needed for a short stay. The bathroom is one of the best we have seen in motels as we holiday around the country. Spacious - room to move - proper shower screen. MIxer tap to help save water (by turning on and off during shower - ie wet self all over, turn off tap, shampoo hair, tap on, tap off, wash rest of self, tap on to rinse! Friendly and helpful reception. Continental breakfast was an unexpected bonus - simple, fresh and most welcome.

There was Nothing we did not like - it was outstanding. Compares very favourably with other motels in which we have stayed recently.
