Charming family-run hotel with pool and bar and a rooftop space with great views. Friendly and helpful staff. Our room was cleaned every day and had a nice balcony (Twin or Double Room). Nice breakfast with homemade baked goods and omelette which varied daily. About a 25-minute walk into town and a few minutes' walk from the nearest beach.

The only downside to the hotel is the lack of soundproofing in the rooms from the corridor. It was OK with earplugs, but we could hear the comings and goings of the other guests early in the morning and late at night which wasn't the most relaxing.

I travelled alone for this trip and my room (201) was a small room wth a double bed, seperate shower and toilet room, fantastic Air Con and a tiny balcony looking out to sea. Plenty of storage space with a fridge which wasn't the best. Buffet style breakfast was continously being restocked so I was able to have a very decnt breakfast every morning. The location is a 25 minute walk from Town, there is a great restaurant next door (Kri Kri) and I used the beach sunbeds on Ormos beach free of charge.

Just spent a very enjoyable week at this friendly hotel. Room 208 was clean, had a comfortable bed, loads of storage, very efficient shower and a fantastic view of the bay. Special thanks to the staff who really seemed to want our stay to be special. Nicos looked after us at the bar before bed, Jeanette made great cocktails, generally kept us entertained and gave useful advice on the local area. Sally kept everything running smoothly at breakfast and is doing a great job looking after poorly local cats. The cheerful ladies in the kitchen made sure that breakfast was different every day with their tasty homemade pastries, jams and more. The garden is well tended with a variety of plants and trees. The pool is warm, never crowded, always with spare sunbeds in the shade and sun. Thanks also to our cleaner who kept our room spotlessly clean. All in all a great little hotel. On the down side, it is quite a walk into Agios Nikolaos...I would say closer to half an hour than 15 minutes. Especially in the heat. The sunbeds on the nearest beach are expensive and it is quite noisy and crowded. Though you can swim closer. The first part of the walk is on a narrow uneven pavement by a busy road. Not ideal at night. It would be good if the hotel sold big packs of water as they are very heavy on a hot day. Our check in experience was efficient but not particularly welcoming. However we would still thoroughly recommend the Lato and its lovely staff. Show less

The view from the rooftop, the swimming pool, but mostly the wonderful breakfast buffet and especially the very kind ladies preparing the food. Every day, there were homemade cakes, cookies, and even homemade jams. The hotel is around 20 minutes away from the center of Agios Nikolaos, but the walk is nice as you follow the coastline.

The fridge was a bit too small and not very powerful. It must be because the hotel has a bar outside, but when it is plus 35 degrees outside, having cold drinks and water in the room is a must.

Amazing family atmosphere and amazingly helpful people. The hospitality is second to none. We travelled with an elderly person on the wheelchair and all the staff accommodated all our needs. Fantastic freshly cooked breakfast and lunch daily. Another highlight is the wonderful stone art display around the hotel, available to buy. Highly recommend stay. We will certainly return the next year.

Everything was great

Hotel was spotlessly clean. Rooms could probably do with updating but again they were very clean. The grounds were well maintained and the pool a good size and not too cold. Jeanette who ran the bar and lunchtime kitchen was fantastic. Being a couple in our sixties we prefer to be a little way out of town and the location for us was ideal being a 15-20 minute walk along the promenade into the main centre with its multitude of bars & restaurants. Having said that if you're feeling less active there are a number of very good tavernas on the walk into town. The local beach is sandy and has a good supply of sunbeds ( 15 euro for 2 beds & sunshade). It's just a short five minute walk from the hotel. There's also a bus stop just a couple of minutes walk with a regular service into Elounda and Plaka which are both well worth a visit if only to catch a ferry to nearby Spinalonga island. So, a lovely hotel, in a great location.....what more could you want!

The area where the hotel is located is not too busy all, allowing us to enjoy the picturesque views from our room and the rooftop bar without distractions. It’s a great location, only 10-15 minutes away from the centre on foot. The staff was very welcoming and friendly throughout our stay and helped us with any questions we had, suggesting places and restaurants to visit. The breakfast buffet was great, so much variety of homemade treats.

It's a small friendly independent hotel. The overall look of the hotel and gardens is very pretty. Gardens very well maintained. We had a sea view room 1st Floor. V easy to get to reception. We had a nice view, partly obstructed by trees, but we liked it. The rooms, as with the hotel in general, were slightly dated, although everything worked and was very clean. Bathroom was small but everything worked and was cleaned daily. Sufficient if not great variety of breakfast options. Small inside dining area, so most ate in the outside dining area. Shade at outside tables was limited, although we usually found a shaded table. Pool and pool area was not large, but plenty of space and beds during our stay. A large tree provides plenty of shade for those looking for some respite from the sun. The cicadas in the trees (Greek crickets) are very noisy and active throughout the day. Lunch and snacks are available between 11.30am and 2.30pm and cocktails and spirits are served during happy hour (6pm – 8pm, daily). Refreshments (beer and soft drinks) are available 24x7. Although the hotel has no restaurant, there's a very good restaurant 120 meters down the road. Agios Nikolaos is perfect for anyone who’s looking for a more traditional Cretan experience. If you want loud music and plenty of nightlife, look elsewhere. There are a couple of roads of shops and great restaurants can be found everywhere around the harbour area. “Town” is about 20-minute stroll from the hotel. Lack of decent pavements means you will end up walking in the street for some of the time. There’s a small beach nearby (Ammoudi Beach). It’s mostly covered in beds which are reasonably priced. We spent a day at the beach (out of 6 days), and were glad we did.

There was nothing of note that we didn't like. This hotel is a clean, friendly, value proposition. At this price, there are often compromises. Lato had fewest compromises at our price range. Although a slope has been built from the car park to reception, it is quite steep. Check before you arrive, but from recollection, access to the lift is not step free. If you have restricted mobility, do your research, as the area is generally quite hilly.

The Lato is a small hotel that is conveniently situated at the North end of Agios Nikolaos where I do my scuba diving with Pelagos Dive Centre. I travel alone so all I needed was a comfortable room and bed and bathroom facilities which were adequate. The breakfast was very good with plenty of hot and cold choices. I used the pool area to relax after my dives and was able to purchase hot or cold food at the Bar area. The photo shows the view from the roof terrace that has seating.

Everything is good

- Private on-site parking - nice pool and sun beds available - little balcony was enjoyable to enjoy some food on - not in the city center (15 min walk), but we liked the walk as it’s right by the water

- fridge didn’t really work that well, even on the coldest setting - cleaning tried to come into the room twice fairly early in the day (9/9:30) while we were still sleeping. Later service would’ve been more appreciated
