Stunning place in the heart of the old Beppu near the Hells of Beppu, incredible place built like a maze but in the coolest way, you can cook over the hot spring steams, the rooms are traditional Japanese style and extremely cozy with good views. Downstairs there's 2 public Onsen and a few streets over there is a private Onsen to enjoy too. The staff is incredibly nice too. Probably the coolest place I've ever stayed at.

Nothing.

Such an amazing place! Feels like a bit of a maze within the house - but like in Chihiros Travels ;) The kitchen is the most amazing thing - an adventure to itself! Overall you feel like you travel back in time :) Definitly will come again, if I get the chance!

The rooms have plenty of space and are comfy, the Ryokan has 2 onsen, 1 small 1 large both were very enjoyable. It is very central and close to shops and restaurants alike. The buses are all easily accessible which makes it easy for moving luggage. I would absolutely visit again!

This is good old Ryokan built on top of a bubbling spring. Good knowledgeable host who speak some English. The steam powered kitchen is outstanding

The Ryokan layout was fun and the location was great! The room was clean with lots of natural light. Our room was more spacious than we had expected (although we may have been upgraded without realizing). We used the private baths which were clean but in a separate building which was a walk away from the hotel. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful! They offered advice for local sites, gave a thorough tour of the facilities and offered support throughout our stay. Using the steam kitchen was an experience in itself- the small grocery across the street had everything we needed to cook a delicious meal and cooking utensils were provided in the room and kitchen area. Parking was free, spacious and easily accessible.

Folks should keep in mind: 1. Air conditioning is coin operated in the rooms. 2. There are two toilets and two sinks shared for the building- rooms do not have any bathroom facilities. There are no showers, we used low spigots and bowls to wash before using the baths. 3. The stairs to the second floor are incredibly steep- if you have any accessibility issues there were rooms on the ground floor! One downside to the ryokan style rooms was that there were small windows over the door facing the hallway. These windows had no curtains and the hallway lights were left on all night for communal bathroom access. We had eye masks, so this wasn’t a huge problem for us but was slightly inconvenient.

It's quite a cozy stay with a nice Showa feeling to it. For some, it might be a downside but for me it was part of the nostalgia. Anyway, rooms are clean and spacious, well insulated in winter and with really good heating (not AC). Baths are the main allure of this place. I doubt you would find a better stay in all of Beppu that would provide you with all the basics (supermarket, restaurants) in one area and private hotspring baths as well! ごくらく、ごくらく! Kitchen might be weird looking at first but it's because it has an authentic system of hotspring steam vents that you can use for cooking your own food! How cool is that! It is also located in the main hotspring area of Beppu so expect the steam coming out from beneath your feet, funny smell of rotten eggs and famous Beppu Hells (really colorful hotsprings), all within a walking distance!

As usual for me, I use this section to keep people informed about certain things, rather than complain. So, before you say anything bad about the stay, be aware that: - This area of Beppu has a funny smell of rotten eggs and there are colorful mineral deposits anywhere the water and steam is located. It's not a dirt but a natural phenomenon related to volcanic hotsprings activity. It is the reason why place is quite popular and so unique! Just be aware of it before you complain about headache if you are sensitive to that stuff! - This area of Beppu is on top of the hills. This might not sound bad but be aware that it is not a good location for daily escapes using train. Travel to the train station might take a little while using local buses and they stop operating relatively early (last bus in this area arrives around 20:00-20:30). Just keep that in mind before you make grand tourist plans. It's a place to rest after all! Probably the ONLY complaint I have for the stay is the fact that AC is paid. It could be an issue during summer but otherwise can be ignored I guess :)
