+ We ordered dinner and breakfast - both are good quality buffet with options like seafood and Japanese dishes + Old hotel but great maintenance + Clean + shuttle bus available to get to the train station (reservation required).

- We had many mosquitoes in the room at nights and it gave us bad sleeping quality. - A bit far from the train station (~13 min walk); but you can take public bus #5 to arrive at the hotel door (¥200/person).

The staff was so nice and helpful! The room was bigger than I expected. The view we had was beautiful! Vending machine on every floor. We purchased the breakfast and dinner buffet and it was the best first impression of Japanese cuisine in Japan! I want to go back and eat more of that delicious food. The onsens were absolutely enjoyable.

I wish I knew I had to reserve the other onsens that were available at this location. I thought they were all available to those who stayed at the hotel.

The room were night and big. It was definitely enough for 1 person. The dinner buffet had a good selection and had enough space. The onsen was nice and relaxing. I had a good time during my stay. They offer shuttles from the hotel to the station in the mornings which was nice. I did not used them. Service was nice.

As with the other reivews, there was a certain smell to the room, but I don't think it was smoke. It didn't bother me after getting used to it, but the first initital was pretty strong.

Amazing views, private onsen, kind staff (English speaking too!). We were blown away by the private dining experience and the quality of the food, the variety of dishes, and the portions were massive. The buffet service was also amazing! We requested to try the buffet, but we could have had private traditional dining for the entire stay. We enjoyed how quiet the town is, while still being close to Nikko Toshogu. This is a Japanese style hotel, so if you have tattoos, I recommend a room with a private onsen. Tattoos must be covered if you want to use the public baths. There is a convenience store next door, and a small cafe downstairs with views of the river and the bridge. The store had alcohol and snacks geared towards drinking. There is also a brand new shopping center across the street, with a variety of restaurants. However, we enjoyed the hotel so much that we rarely left! Especially since breakfast and dinner are included in the stay. We slept in one morning and staff called to ask if we would be coming down for breakfast! Something we did not know would happen if we did not attend. We are still not sure what the situation called for, as we were not sure if we were supposed to call down to let them know ^^;; About 1 hr by bus to Nikko! I suggest getting off at the Toshogu bus stop and trying one of the new restaurant stands closest to the shrine. The coffee and grilled chicken were both great. We walked to the main bus stop in Nikko proper to see all the shops in the town. I would love to come back!! It was an amazing stay that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Small signs of age, but still very clean!

Stunning view from the room, it had a very large balcony and you could see the entire valley and the beautiful bridge with the Autumn leaves behind. The room was very spacious and the temperature was pleasant we did not need to turn on the heater. It was not cold to be sleeping on the tatami. There are not many electrical plugs but the hotel provides an extension cable with many outlets. Also they were able to lend us mobile phone charger. There are no convenience stores nearby. There is a mom&pop shop outside the hotel that offers items like a convenience store but they do not offer warm food, only snacks and drinks. The hot spring on the second floor will change the room every day so you have to chance to experience both facilities. The one we saw in the morning had a cute Japanese Red bridge and views of the Autumn leaves.

It would be nice if they can offer other restaurants or foods except for the very crowded and loud buffet for dinner and breakfast. The dinner there is expensive more than 4,000 yen so it would be nice if they can provide food like a simple pizza for people who do not need to eat so much and at a reasonable price. The restaurants around the hotel close very early or are sold out with reservations.

Our suite was adorable - like an old grand dame without makeup! Very 50s and quaint. We had a huge living room, large tatami room, decent bedroom and great shower and soaking tub. We did the half board which was breakfast and dinner in our own private dining room with a view of the mountain and river. The kaiseki dining experience was amazing but so much food! Breakfast was not our favorite and we live in Japan. We switched to the buffet breakfast for our second day and I’m sorry to say it was not very pleasant. It was crowded and noisy and not very clean. Also the food was cold and not replaced very quickly when the dishes were empty. But there are so many facilities! And the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Must have a car to travel (not too far) to sights.

We loved everything about our 5 nights at Kinugawa Sunshine Hotel. The room was perfect and had an incredible view of the bridge and down the river. We loved wearing our Yukattas around the hotel, to the multiple luxurious onsens, footbath cafe and the impressive buffets. It was family friendly and the futons were the best sleep on our entire trip to Japan. The hotel is 10 mins to Edo Wonderland, 20 mins to Nikko Station & Nikko Toshogu, and 50 mins to Mt Nantai, Kegon Falls & Lake Chuzenji. The staff were fabulous and very patient with our limited Japanese (though I highly recommend learning some basics). Definitely worth a stay if you're visiting to Nikko area.

We didn't want to leave.

The room has vintage feeling, I appreciated the history in many pieces and details. The room is very spacious and clean. We opted the half board that comes with dinner and breakfast. We were very satisfied with the meals. The futon beds were actually comfortable. It's cold winter but we were surprised we actually slept very well. There's a bus running around the hotels outside of the train station. It cost probably 300yen or $2 if my memory served me right. We didn't use it because it was only 10 mins walking on flat paved road, just following google. We enjoyed the hotels public hot springs and had a good experience wearing the yukata the hotel provided. We walked the bridge just outside of the hotel and followed the sign to see the streams. Its not that huge but it's still very beautiful and peaceful.

Although this is a non smoking room, there's still a lingering cigarettes smoke smell that was very light but my nose was quite sensitive to pick it up. I probably got used to it after some minutes but everytime I re entered the room, I smelled it again. I think long time ago the rooms allowed smoking and that smell penetrated everywhere and difficult to totally get rid off. I sensed the hotel has tried the best but it is just stubborn to go away. The bathroom was very basic. We didn't know there would be someone entering our room and made futon bed during our dinner, the staff didn't tell us. It's nice but we wished we were told so we could put away some things.

Beautiful and spacious, very traditional and plenty of room for the two of us. The view and weather was amazing during my stay there, the onsen experience in the private bath remains the best part. The free footbaths were fantastic with the selection of snacks you could buy, it was in sync with what they offered. I would revisit if i was in the area again.

There was a smell of lingering cigarettes in certain areas of the room. And the tatami mat was very unfriendly to my leggings which kept getting caught in the material. I had to be extra careful not to kneel or get caught in it. The property also had a conflicting policy of being eco-friendly and yet offering a lot of disposable items inside the rooms. I cant really get over the fact that the bathroom cups were paper cups and the absence of hand towels. They should do better if they were really concerned over the environment.

The layout of traditional Ryokan-style rooms are lovely and spacious and access to the Onsen is fantastic and incredibly relaxing and invigorating. Views over the river from our balcony and the sound of flowing water was peaceful. The hotel was within easy walking distance of the train station and also the nature park across the river.

There was a slightly grotty feel to parts of the room, partly because of its age I think ( stains on ceiling and chairs, patches on walls in disrepair) but this did not detract from our overall enjoyment of our stay.
