Very cozy onsen ryokan which suited our needs perfectly. Staff were friendly and always ready to help. The onsen baths were also great with your choice of either booking the private baths or partaking in the communal baths. Rooms were also spacious, clean and comfortable. Real highlight was the food. Dinner's multiple courses were splendidly made and highlighted a lot of local cuisine. Breakfast was no slouch either. Highly recommended.

Only issue was the location. Remember to take the bus that stops at Ippousui or be prepared for a little walk along the mountain road towards the ryokan.

The properties excellent. Staff is warm and kind. The food is exceptional. There is so much food you will not leave hungry. The Japanese breakfast is something that I loved, but not all foreigners will enjoy it. There are both a public bath and a private bath. You can reserve the private bath for 50 minutes. However, since the ryokan is small, we were the ones ones in the public bath when we used it. The baths were clean and very zen like. We loved it:

I believe the instructions to get to the property are not sufficient on this website. You must exit the train station and go off to the right side and down the escalator. You will see the bus center in front of you. You must pay and go onto the bus. You will, get off on Ipposui bus stop. Also there are only a few times during the day the bus comes by so don’t miss it.

The staff were very lovely and accommodating. One of us spoke Japanese and the other didn’t so we really appreciated the efforts of the staff trying to speak English and provide information in English. The food was incredible. We stayed for two nights and had wonderful breakfasts and dinners. Each day had different meals so we didn’t eat the same thing twice. We especially loved the private bath which was bookable through the front desk. Highly recommend giving it a go. The staff also kindly noted that it was ok to enter the shared baths despite having tattoos (so long as they are small). We had the room with maisonette and loved using the kotatsu (heated table) that was set up in the room.

One of the taps in our bathroom didn’t work very well and sputtered. If you’re sensitive to sound then you may be bothered by the mild road noise of car driving past outside (wasn’t an issue for me personally)

The ryokan is comfortable, warm, very clean, and has excellent facilities. The food was very good, and the baths were fantastic. I especially liked our private bath, and would have loved to have booked another day just so I could soak all day.

Getting there by bus was somewhat frightening. We took a bus from nearby Takayama, and were dropped off at Kumabokuchou bus stop. It then took an additional ten minutes of walking along a very busy mountain road with no sidewalk, cars and trucks driving very close by until we reached a gravel road. Because rolling luggage does not roll on gravel, I had to carry our (medium) luggage a good five minutes before we found the ryokan. There is a bus stop immediately outside the ryokan, but it only gets 4 or 6 buses per day. All that to say: take a taxi. It'll save you trouble.

We had the loveliest time in Ryokan Kutsuroginoya Yuu. We stayed just one night, but it was one of the most relaxing nights we’ve had in a while! The staff was warm and welcoming, ever so helpful. We loved the private onsen in the room, but the public onsen was absolutely stunning. The kaiseki meal we had was delicious, absolutely worth the money for the experience and the amount of food we had. The rooms were lovely and cozy. A wonderful experience that we wished didn’t have to end.

Wonderful room with private bath and garden view as well as public baths with outdoor part. Weather was rainy and it was great to stay indoor but also bathing outside. Personnel was extremely kind and dedicate, and made it very easy to communicate in English. We travelled with a 6 month old baby and they were extremely kind and provided all types of attentions to her. Kaiseki food offered was delicious. Souvenir shop, manga collection and common areas are amazing. There is a very convenient bus stop at the door and they also provided a shuttle from Hirayu Onsen bus stop on our arrival. Overall, a fantastic experience.

We stayed with our 3 year old daughter. During our excellent 13 - course dinner in a private dining room, the staff setup a play area with toys for our daughter when she finished eating so the adults could enjoy the entire meal. Little touches like that made this a wonderful stay. The room's private outdoor onsen was a great way to end the day- or begin it after a long day hiking in the mountains. The staff also setup summer fireworks for our daughter to enjoy after dark. The rec room had drawing materials for our kid and a huge manga library.

This ryokan is exceptional. The house and baths were very tranquil and beautiful, the staff is extremely kind and considerate, and both breakfast and dinner were likely the best meals we had while visiting Japan. I had high expectations of here after reading reviews and they were exceeded highly. There is not anything to do in the neighborhood as it’s just along a bus line but the remoteness is what we found charming. It’s easy to relax while you sit in the bath and enjoy the mountains surrounding. I would come back to Hirayu just to stay here again!

The onsen (both pivate and public) was amazing. Hot but not too hot, just the right temperature. The staff also upgraded my room free of charge and it was very comfortable. The dinner and breakfeast was also amazing as well, probably the best japanese traditional food I had dring my entire trip.

While it was not difficult to get to from Takayama bus station, it was not very conveniant when travelling around okuhida onsen, since there were only buses every two hours from the other bus stops in the area.

It's our 1st time staying Ryokan. Overall experience was great. We didn't have our lunch when we arrived. There was no restaurant or convenient store in proximity and kitchen was close. The staff was kind enough to cook us a very simple meal. Dinner and breakfast served were of quality and high standard. Overall, great experience!

If you are taking bus from Hirayu Bus stop you need to check the route and timing, not all buses make a stop at Ipposui.
