A beautiful traditional home filled with lovely ceramics. The home cooked breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed our mornings overlooking the garden. When we arrived Yuriko kindly collected us from the station and ran us a hot bath in the outside Onsen. Ooka Kanehisa was very kind and took us to visit his friends pottery studio and to the sake brewery, indigo dye house and museum. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to visit again!

It was a little far from town so we did rely on getting a lift as we didn’t have a car, but the owners were very helpful and happy to collect us and drop us back each day.

I really enjoyed my stay here at Mori no Garden! It was a quaint and welcoming stay! The room was nice and cozy. The host and her family were lovely and great hosts, making my visit to Mashiko seamless! The host provided well balanced meals. Breakfast kept me full throughout the day. She helped me navigate my way around town. It was nice talking with her and her family. Lol one night the host and her son even taught me how to write in Kanji! (Lol I struggled, but I was taught well! 😂) I would deff love to stay here again if I ever return to Mashiko!

During the winter, common areas can be a little chilly when the fireplace isn't going, so just make sure to dress warm and you will be fine.

Yuriko, the guesthouse host, is a complete gem! Even though we didn’t speak each other’s languages, we were able to communicate and laugh through Google Translate. Her home-cooked dinners were delicious. They were authentic Japanese dishes, not the typical ramen or sushi that you get in the States. This is not a generic, sterile hotel experience. It’s like living at your favorite aunt’s house in the countryside!

I wish I could have walked to the center of Mashiko, but it wasn’t a problem. Yuriko pick up and dropped off whenever I needed.

Wonderful stay with lovely host family. Yuriko and her husband were very kind to us and we had a great conversation about life and pottery with the help of Google Translate. Yuriko provided a delicious and hearty home-cooked breakfast and dinner (dinner was arranged in advance, for a very reasonable extra fee), and was able to accommodate our request for vegetarian meals. She also picked us up and dropped us off in Mashiko town and offered to take us to more out-of-the-way pottery shops. The large detached bath house was very relaxing after a day of walking, and everyone in our group slept comfortably in the rooms.

Morino Garden is a hidden gem. We stayed in one of the tatami rooms and enjoyed the comfort. The room has a sink, fridge, and microwave, and the shared toilet is barely a step away. (Shower is downstairs, still quite convenient.) But the real charm of Morino Garden is the host. Yuriko went above and beyond for us, offering rides, luggage storage, and even a meal we hadn’t booked. We felt as if we’d been welcomed into a home—as, indeed, we had.

Nothing, really, I noted the ways it differs from a standard hotel room in the pervious comment, but that just made it more special for us.

Mashiko is frequently done as a day trip from Tokyo, but I found spending a few days was more rewarding.  Honestly, as a tourist, I'm not a big fan of Tokyo anyway. Mori-no Gardens provides a comfortable stay in a country house just outside the small town of Mashiko.  Within walking distance; however, the proprietess, Yuriko, will also transfer you by car in the morning and  afternoon.  A wonderful town to walk around in and explore (pottery and antique shops, rice fields, temples, sake)-- do not miss the Hamada museum. I am vegetarian and I highly recommend her Japanese home style cooking, a delicious variety of offerings you probably will not find in restaurants.   One of my best and inspiring experiences in Japan this trip, so grateful.  Please arrange a meal plan when you book, as you cannot simply show up and ask for dinner-- that is not possible. I look forward to returning, a marvelous time.

The guesthouse host was super lovely. My room was comfortable. The meals were varied and delicious; they were the most authentically home-cooked Japanese food I've ever had. It felt like I was staying at my favorite aunt's house. The location is not walkable to Mashiko, but the host is very accommodating in driving guests to town and other sites and back to the house. A wonderful trip away from the big cities!

Yuriko was a warm and very hospitable host. She made sure we were very comfortable and was a fabulous cook, I really enjoyed our breakfasts and our morning conversations. The bnb is very homely with lots of wood and big expansive windows that show off the big green garden. We also loved the wooden bath, it was a great way to unwind after a long day exploring Mashiko. The bnb is tucked away so you may find it a bit hard to find if you travel by car, but the benefit of this is that it’s incredibly quiet in the evening! We loved our stay and was certainly a highlight of our 4 week holiday.

A home away from home, Yuriko went extra miles to make guests comfortable, we are like an old friend of hers and not a guest. I stayed there for five nights and felt so sad when I had to leave, would definitely come back some day!
