Wow, our stay at The Fernery exceeded expectations in every way. The scenery and location was absolutely stunning, the service exceptional and the staff extremely friendly & helpful. We stayed in a chalet which was right on the gorge with beautiful views. It was very spacious and comfortable, with a fantastic bed, lovely luxe linen and towels, and a divine double shower with great water pressure. The daily included breakfast options were seemingly endless and delicious, and the dinners we had at the restaurant were first class. Any dietary requirements were also readily catered for. The massages were the best we’ve ever had (and we’ve been to some very high end establishments) and absolutely worth the price. We’ve been fortunate to travel fairly extensively both locally and abroad and this was one of the best breakaways we’ve ever had. A truly unique location with every detail well thought out and catered for, we are already planning a return visit.

Absolutely nothing, it was a perfect week!

A stunning location once you have negotiated the 6kms of track to reach it. Lovely pool area. Room was spacious & clean. Breakfast lovely but evening menu was limited & you are a captive audience unless you want to brave the access road in the dark!

The biggest issue was the heat as all bedrooms have no air conditioning & we were sticky & uncomfortable in the humidity .For a hotel of this calibre & cost this is unacceptable. Windows & doors couldn’t be left open because of monkey’s & mosquitos! Fly screening would have helped slightly. Other guests were also unhappy & it has been mentioned in other reviews .

What a fantastic place, from the amazing views to the spacious rooms, to the lovely dinner and impressive wine collection. What really made me smile me was the staff and how attentive and friendly they were. The pool was clean and cool and the bar lady so sweet and attentive. The hot tub is awesome and quiet and peaceful. Great walks to be had, just take water along as it gets hot. The monkeys were so cute and naughty - but don't leave your windows open as they will come in. We will be back!

No aircon in the lodge rooms. There is a fan but it only helps if you lie directly under it. I would highly recommend that they invest in aircons. Unfortunately you can't leave doors or windows open as the monkeys will come in so that makes it hotter.

Absolutely stunning lodge & grounds. The views were out of this world. The staff all went above and beyond especially Tinashe who made our stay so special. The food was exceptional and the hot tubs exquisite. The little touches like monogramed dressing gowns and fresh filter coffee/ cafetière in the room made things extra special.

Spa slippers would have been nice to walk between hot tubs & rooms. The driveway was a little harsh on the car, a warning would be nice at the start of the road.

We had the most incredible stay. From the private dining experience in the cellar to the soothing sauna sessions each morning and relaxing hot tubs every evening – every moment felt luxurious and thoughtfully curated. The food was absolutely superb, and the fireplace in our room added such a cozy, romantic touch. We loved having the flexibility to dine in our lodge, enjoy the restaurant, or even order in – it made the entire stay feel relaxed and tailored to our moods. The spa was wonderfully calming, and we left feeling completely refreshed. It was the perfect getaway, and we couldn’t have asked for more.

The only downside to our stay was a brief incident where another couple, unfortunately not adhering to the rules, used our private hot tub – which meant we lost an hour of our allocated time. It was a bit disappointing, but thankfully the staff responded quickly and professionally. It didn’t take away from what was otherwise a truly exceptional experience.

So we started next door and were there for a couple of days, 1. The fenery was comfortable and warm. 2. The breakfast was amazing, when you used to a breakfast buffet and get minimal choice it’s the saddest which is what we got next door. I appreciated that the fenery had croissants for breakfast which was not provided for next door. 3. It really was value for money, we spent way less than what we did next door price wise. 4. The restaurant actually had a nice menu, appreciated the game carpaccio of which in the area was a hard to find. All in all, I’d definitely recommend and go back.

We stayed here for 1 night as part of our honeymoon. The hotel is situated up a dirt track road. However, it is very well signposted, and we had no issues with our rental car. Check-in was very easy; we had booked one of the lodges, which had been kindly decorated for our honeymoon, and we even received a complimentary bottle of fizz! The grounds are beautiful, overlooking the waterfall, and we enjoyed using the different jacuzzis and hot tubs. There are monkeys on the premises, so you are advised to keep your windows and doors closed in case they try to steal some sugar, which did happen to one unfortunate couple! Breakfast had a great selection of hot and cold food and service was quick.

Dinner was ok, not bad but nothing spectacular.

The Fernery is an absolute gem! The setting is breathtaking, perched along the sides of a canyon with jaw-dropping views of waterfalls below and the ocean stretching out beyond. The hot tub and jacuzzi were standout spots—such a perfect way to unwind. We also loved the spacious bar, which looks like it’s been recently refurbished—ideal for relaxing with an evening drink. The staff truly made the experience unforgettable. Warm, welcoming, and so attentive—they’re a real asset to the hotel. The food was another highlight! Dinner was delicious with hearty portions, and they were happy to personalize dishes from the menu. The breakfast buffet was lovely, and the cooked options were excellent too. We initially thought the hotel looked a little dated online, but in person, the style adds to its unique charm, and the cleanliness and maintenance standards are top-notch. Overall, we couldn’t have been happier with our stay!

The luxury unit that we stayed in was spacious, comfortable and well designed. The lodge has great facilities - we used the hot tub, jacuzzi and steam sauna, all of which are at no extra cost. The continental breakfast options were superb, with many options of freshly baked bagels, croissants, salmon, fruit, etc. We loved the views from the reception area, the peaceful surroundings and friendly staff. We also enjoyed the walking trails on the property.

There is a 6km gravel road leading to the lodge - although it’s not a very bad drive. There are lots of monkeys on the property so you have to be vigilant and keep the doors and windows closed. Despite this we would still return to the lodge.

The mistake was staying only night. The location is truly spectacular, with plenty of amenities - hot tubs besides the waterfall! - and pleasant walks, a great restaurant and glorious views. Because of one night, we were unable to take it all in. Loved it, but should have stayed more nights 😉

The only minor downside is the strict, early check out time of 10am. I get it from a logistics point of view but this place is so cool, a little more relaxed check out would have been perfect.
