We would highly recommend this hotel and restaurant. This hotel was located in an exceptionally beautiful and tranquil setting (we were there in the Summer). You are in the countryside and the views of the Swiss countryside and the Appenzeller Alps were outstanding. The room (#8) was exceptionally large and nice (windows on both east and south sides - a corner room). We ate at the restaurant and the food was excellent (but you had to ignore the health food slant of the menu because the actual dishes were excellent).

Without taking away from every other aspect to our stay (which was excellent!) the only minor complaint was the design of the bathroom. Small compact bathrooms are quite common in Europe, but this one was particularly difficult. We are older, and we needed to be gymnasts to sit down on the toilet. If remodeled, this bathroom deserves some better re-designing. Another very small quibble - the bed needed a bedside table (one side of the bed was the door to the bathroom and no bedside table would have worked, but the other side had room for a bedside table)

Hotel Frohe Aussicht is located in the small village of Schwende near Appenzell. I was mainly looking for a place to stay for one night, and I chose this one because it was conveniently located and had its own parking space. So I wasn't expecting much, but it quickly became clear that Hotel Frohe Aussicht was an excellent choice. The room was basic, with a private balcony and bathroom. The hotel had an excellent restaurant. The staff were nice and professional. The views from the balcony were amazing. I could have spent more nights here. I definitely recommend it.

I didn't realize this when booking this property, but apparently some sort of 'Appenzell card' (don't know the actual name) was included. You could take several cable cars for free, enter certain museums for free, get discounts on the bus etc. Saved me at least 50€ ...

The breakfast was pretty decent, but I missed bacon and scrambled eggs. :-)

Frohe Aussicht is just great. It is very nicely located offering a spectacular view. It is just a 7min drive to Appenzell and close to nice hiking trails in the area. The staff/owners are extremely nice, polite and very responsive. The restaurant is very high quality giving the visitors the chance to try tasty local food. It is worth every penny and i definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to travel in the Appenzell area.

Had a short stay but wonderful!! The place is amazing, the terrace is beautiful and you can relax in quiet, very comfy bed, clean room and delicious breakfast! The location is great to stay for starting place for hikes and the staff friendly and helpful! Hopefully to return and stay longer! Thank you!

Great location for hiking in Appenzell. 10 min drive from the main town with restaurants and supermarket. Beautiful views of the mountains. Very clean, and spacious rooms. Continental breakfast was extensive. Loved the homemade bread rolls and wide selection of teas. Would stay again if I hike in that area.

It was a lovely summer trip, apart from the flies (maybe from all the cows that live around the hotel - didn't hear the cows too much). The flies were a bit annoying flying around the breakfast table. Only one window in the bedroom had a bug screen, which meant we couldn't open the other window for ventilation on a hot summer night.

This hotel is a gem. A lovely property run by an efficient and pleasant couple in a great location. Our rooms were clean, comfortable, and spacious. My only minor request would be a paper add on to the dinner menu in English as it took awhile using Google translate. The dinner was also excellent.

A bit of an uphill schlep from the train station.Need to be in good physical shape especially with luggage.Need more window screens for cross ventilation ; no AC.You are in cow country so there are flies.Got used to the nearby church bells but a bit much every 15 min during the day and hourly at night.No lounge area.Retire to your room at night.
