The location was great for visiting West Cumbria. Evening menu varied, good quality, tasty and not too expensive. Breakfast buffet and choice of cooked fayre. The dog loved the grounds, the breakfast sausage, and all the attention from the staff. Direct access from the hotel room into the grounds also made life easier with the dog.

A bit of paint to refresh the exterior would make a major difference on arrival, but really all was overcome by the service and friendly staff. The building is over 200 years old and is showing its age, which is sad because there are many lovely features, like fireplaces, panelling, and ornate ceilings. Decor in the bedrooms was a bit dated, but everything functioned.

This was in a beautiful location. The room was nice and clean and had a nice outlook to the front of the hotel. The breakfast was very good 👍. Also we had 3 dogs which were allowed to stay with us. There was a lovely en suite aswell. We sat down and had breakfast in a lovely large room overlooking the rear of the hotel, which we could see the huge garden with spectacular views. The staff were very welcoming, friendly people. Thanks for a lovely stay guys.

The only problem was staying at the front of the hotel , there was the noise of the traffic all night. We had to have the windows open as it was a very warm night.

We arrived before official check-in time and they were lovely and let us check in - as we'd been walking on the Coast-to-coast trail and were hot and tired. The room was lovely, with a door out onto the garden, the weather was a little too cool to have it open, but I appreciated the view. The decor in the room was fine, but a little tired in the bar area (as others have said), I don't think this detracted as it is a lovely old building and it helped me feel more comfortable in my walking gear. We enjoyed the bar area a lot, and some guests were sitting in the nice garden for drinks. Dinner was fabulous and the staff were busy but very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was one of the best we had.

Nothing, everything went well.

Great location, except for being close to a main A road (our room was overlooking this, so quite noisy) with easy access to any sight seeing attractions. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Included breakfasts were very good, with plenty of options. Gardens at the back are lovely.

The hotel is looking very tired, and lots of general maintenance / repair is required. Going for a "small double" room is not advisable (it really is a small double bed for two).

The staff were welcoming after our first tiring and very warm day on the Coast to Coast. The rooms were an oasis of cool and comfort. And there was a bath for my aching legs. Good food in a beautifully grand dining room and a garden where we toasted our first day and watched the sun go down.

The walls were a little thin, and my son had trouble sleeping due to the rumble of conversation from the room next-door to his. I could hear my neighbours but was too tired to be too bothered.

This is a beautiful old hotel with loads of character. Although a bit tired around the edges it's set in lovely grounds and the parking is great with easy access to the hotel. The staff were brilliant and the breakfast was delicious 😋. I'd definitely stay again as the location is brilliant for getting to walks and lakes!! 👍

The only fault I'd have was my single room was a bit tired and the bed wasn't the greatest comfy wise. It also had no view whatsoever just looked out into the middle of the hotel which wasn't great!! Everything else was spot on!! 😃

Relaxing atmosphere. Staff friendly and helpful. Food good 👍 😋. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom had plenty of hot water with good pressure from the shower. We had lovely weather, so we made good use of the tranquil gardens. Our dog was made welcome.

The exterior could do with a bit of attention, but I believe that will be happening at some point. It's a grade 2 listed and should be looked after.

The food was fantastic and the staff were friendly and approachable and took care of our every need. Great service and beautiful location. The room was lovely and very comfortable.

The only thing that I would improve on is the paint work on the outside on the the building. It could do with a fresh coat of paint and touch up across the entire building. It is a beautiful building and needs to be maintained to looked after.

Location was extremely quiet, which is what we required. I am a support worker and took a service user for his holiday. This was his first stay in an hotel. The staff were all excellent but especially Jackie and Rachel. Without prior knowledge they recognised John’s difficulties and adapted to his needs incredibly well. Nothing was too much trouble making our stay not only excellent but perfect. Thank you.

Dog friendly Ideal location to visit the places we had planned to visit Spacious room which although was a little tatty all facilities in good working order with a good hairdryer which is unusual in a hotel.

Nothing about the hotel particularly but my dog was attacked by another guests dogs whose dogs were not on a lead. Perhaps the hotel should insist dogs are on leads in the hotel and gardens.
