The location is fantastic and the large beds very comfortable, Breakfast was standard buffet style and pretty average. The Alice in Wonderland themed afternoon tea room, was tacky and strange, especially when the hotel has so much potential to be classy. The music that played constantly was Celtic folk music and if you like this type of music great, but beware if you don’t as there is no variant. On checkout I mentioned the music and suggested a playlist that wasn’t all folk music only to be told that it was playing as Queen Mary had once stayed there and that everyone liked it but me (very rude, and not able to take criticism). Great for a one night stay, but maybe any longer and you may not get out alive 😂

The hotel is very close to the Opera House, making it the perfect choice if you're going there! It's a beautiful building. As you go in, there's an afternoon tea room on your left, a lounge on your right, decorated in the style of the building. It takes you back in time! There is a bar, and a restaurant (very good food, not quite 5-star, but very enjoyable). There is also a very quaint, functioning, cage lift, if you have trouble with stairs. My room (5) was gorgeous: dual aspect windows, a lovely big shower, a high, comfy bed & plenty of space . Drinks and kettle. Lovely big wardrobe. Standard lamp, as well as the overhead light and two lamps over the bed. My room looked out onto The Slopes, a lovely view! The customer care at this hotel is absolutely excellent. Nothing was too much trouble, they seemed to care very much that everything was perfect. And for me, it was!

There is nothing to dislike about this hotel. If you like modern surroundings, you wouldn't book here, but I loved the decor. The rooms/ bedrooms have all the modern fittings.

The stay overall was pleasant, the dimensions of the upper floors were strange as would be expected of an inn of this age, quirky but nice. the bed was comfortable and the breakfast the next morning was excellent.

After booking the parking early with a member of staff and being told we could pay on departure the plot changed. We had a walk around until it was time to check in, 3.00pm and were told abruptly we had to pay for the parking now. It would help the hotel 1) if it instructed certain members of the staff if they could communicate with each other over these details and 2) use some manners to guests checking in.

Room was spacious and clean. Breakfast was fresh. Vegetarian sausages were lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful Christmas decorations were lovely.

There were no soft furnishings in the 'lounge' of the flat, like cushions or throws. This made it feels somewhat stark. The lift was a bit hit and miss in terms of working due to the cage not being fully shut, so most of the time we had to use stairs, which didn't pose a massive problem for us, but might have if we had limited mobility. Carrying our cases up the stairs was tricky. The room numbering system was very random, leading to confusion and getting lost.

This is a genteel traditional hotel that still maintains high standards for its guests. Many of the guests rooms are quite beautifully furnished with top quality bedding, towels, refreshments and so on. There is a communal lounge, an excellent bar where there are snacks, full meals and drinks available. Breakfast is truly excellent quality and flavoursome. The staff are excellent, well chosen, kind, polite, helpful and so warm and friendly. We loved everything about this hotel. It is slightly dated, but that is a significant part of its old world charm!

Bigger lounge with a few more easy chairs.

Amazing historical building close to Opera House, Pavilion gardens, mineral spa baths and local pubs, eateries and shops. Fantastic lady on reception and friendly staff throughout. Great food in the bar and restaurant. Comfortable and homely lounge area with wonderful views of the park. Parking immediately outside the hotel.

Our room was lovely and recently refurbished but a little smaller than expected. Being an older building there are creaky floorboards and plumbing noises but this can't be helped - just worth taking note if you're a light sleeper.

We stayed on Christmas Day evening and even with it being a day most people wouldn't want to work on, the staff were still really friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much. They'd decorated the lounge area with a beautiful Christmas tree (with a quirky Victorian theme) and made it feel festive for guests. Our room had a four poster bed and was decorated beautifully. Parking is easy and fuss-free. Beautiful old building. We've stayed a few times now at different times of the year and we're never disappointed.

Hard to fault it!

Ambiance, welcome, efficient daily servicing of room, location, convenience of access to key Buxton activities, nearness to local relatives and friends, parking arrangements, the weather was great on two of our days… Buxton at its best.

Carpets and general cleaning in public spaces… a bit scruffy. Breakfast had a little more choice on our last day, compared with over the bank holiday weekend, but food was cool to cold, maybe because we eat earlier?

Fantastic location and period features, plus the provenance of the history. The very art deco lift was an experience, but not in a bad way and the room was very lovely and well furnished with period items.

The bathroom was very basic and the bed could have done with some maintenance as it felt like was a bit Rocky. The parking was ok, but it’s council owned you have to pay £6 for 24hr which isn’t that bad. Other than that the building is old and is bound to show some signs of age or disrepair.

I have stayed in this hotel a number of times over the years mainly because of its close proximity to the Opera House. Since my last stay the rooms have been upgraded and mine was well appointed with a double aspect and a lovely view. I slept very well as the bed was comfortable. The staff on reception were helpful and friendly.

There now seems to be piped music in the public areas and on Sunday morning this was rock music - somewhat inappropriate for a classical music festival clientele. There is also a smell of cooking. Breakfast was OK but not of the standard it used to be. Eggs had obviously been sitting for some time on the hotplate so the yokes were hard.
