We stayed one night in this lovely Ryokan during our overnight trip from Tokyo. Since we were doing the Hakone loop in a clockwise direction, it was located at a convenient halfway point for the sights we planned to see each day. The staff were very welcoming and we enjoyed the experience of our Kaiseki breakfast. Since we are not huge fans of this type of cuisine, we were pleased we didn't take the option of both a Kaiseki dinner and breakfast. The steep walk up the hill to the Ryokan is short and we only had small backpacks, so it was easy to walk on our own. At the bottom of the hill is a large 711, so we were able to buy snacks for dinner.

Conveniently located near Motohakone-ko (very close to the Motohakone-ko Tozan bus stop and near the Motohakone pier), there's a steep slope to get to the ryokan, but if you call them using the payphone in front of the 7-11 close to the bus stop they'll pick you up. Our room had a private bath and it was absolutely beyond expectations. Comfortable room (although you may need to get used to walk on tatami and sit in a kotatsu), and along with the private bath you can also use the public baths of the ryokan (they're not "public" after 17.00 until 10 in the following morning, so you can just lock the door and have a time for yourself). Service is also on top of things as staff was very, very helpful. They speak English, although knowing a bit of Japanese may get the point across better (I switched from English to Japanese and vice versa depending on the occasion). The ryokan will also receive baggage sent from Hakone-Yumoto's baggage delivery service (and also send them back to the station), which can be very useful if you want to go around the Hakone area without being slowed down. Our plan had breakfast and it was plentiful (far more than what I use to have!) and tasty. The price can be steep, but it's worth every single cent.

Nothing really of concern to report, to be honest.

This place is beautiful and the staff and service are impeccable. It is peaceful and gorgeously decorated. The staff welcomed us with a drink in a beautiful, traditional room overlooking the lake. Our hostess made every effort to explain everything in English. After my daughter forgot her phone on the bus, the staff went out of their way to call the bus company and help us. Dinner and breakfast were absolute works of art. The private onsen in the room was beautiful. The location is also ideal: I got up early and walked over to Hakone shrine, which I had to myself. We also caught stunning views of Mount Fuji over the lake. Then when it was time to leave, the bus was just down the road. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Nothing!

From the moment we arrived, we felt very welcomed and sensed the unparalleled hospitality of the Japanese culture. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate us and ensure our stay was the best that it could be. Our spaces were very clean and we were provided with everything in our room. There was absolutely no reason for leaving the ryokan because everything was provided in our room including refreshments, alcoholic beverages, towels, and food. The location was unbeatable with views of the lake and our ryokan was perfect temperature. We really really enjoyed this experience. This was most definitely our highlight of Japan and possibly one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had in my life!

There was nothing about the ryokan that I did not like. The doors do lock overnight from 10-6 I believe, but this is for the safety of guests. In addition, you can request to leave during this time if you desire.

It’s a whole experience to stay at Fukuya! The staff did exceptional work hosting us. The room was big and had everything we needed. We used shared onsen twice and it was great! Also, keiseki dinner and breakfast were great.

The hotel is located on a hill so you might have some troubles getting up with the luggage if you are coming by bus. Also, the hotel itself is not modern or new but in very good condition. The only thing we didn’t like that the bathroom doesn’t have heating and it was very cold inside.

This was an amazing experience. Once inside, there was no desire to leave! The traditional decor, design and furniture are perfect. Everything is done to make you feel comfortable including traditional indoor clothes. Our room had its own ootdoor onsen which we used several times a day and night. Water at 40°C and subzero outside temp. We had view to the lake, forest and glimpses of Mt Fuji through the trees. Served in our room, the breakfasts and especially the Kaiseki dinners were out of this world. Everything was delicious and perfectly presented. Our hostess, Gurung, was charming and natural and explained every single dish to us. Hakone itself is full of surprises, such as the Hakone Open Air Museum, a gem! So we did leave the room but certainly feel that a 3 night stay was the right amount of time to enjoy the ryokan.

The external aspect of the house is nothing special and the track is steep if short. We did manage it with our luggage but a taxi is definetely better.

This isn’t just a hotel but an authentic Japanese experience. From the moment my husband, daughter (9yrs) and I checked in we were warmly welcomed and the service from the staff was amazing. We genuinely feel like we got to experience true Japanese culture during our stay.

There is a bit of a hill to get up to the hotel, it’s not long but it is quite steep, so probably not ideal to attempt with any large luggage items (they have a shuttle bus during check in/out times available). In saying that it didn’t stop us walking up and down it into town at all, even during wet weather.

First of all huge props and praises for the staff, The staff was very accommodating and let us change our reservation last minute on site to fit an extra person into our room. The room was clean and had pretty much every amenity we wanted, and the free drinks in the mini fridge was a nice bonus. A big reason deciding factor for us was the the rooms are large enough to accommodate large groups. We had a group of 6 and we all slept pretty comfortably. The public baths are private per group meaning you can take your time and enjoy the onsens without worrying about other people joining in.

A few minor complaints were that one of the ACs in our room was a bit finicky and some time to get working the way we wanted. Also the onsen didn't feel as authentic as the one I went to in Noborubetsu due to the lack of sulfur smell which i guess can also be a plus if you don't like the smell of sulfur. Finally it was a bit pricey but compared to other ryokans in Hakone and considering the included meals, I think it's actually pretty fair.

The meals were phenomenal. The onsen was fabulous. Everyone was so gracious and helpful. We loved the ryokan experience; it was peaceful and somehow both simple and luxurious. Futons can only be so comfortable compared to a bed, but they exceeded my expectation for how comfortable they would be! And the location is fantastic, an easy walk to the ferry on the lake. We absolutely loved our stay.

Booking a cab to the train station has to be done in advance, which we failed to do, but we appreciated that they provide rides to the bus station, and we found that cabs are dropping people off there frequently anyway.

My husband and I stayed here for a night while completing the Hakone round course. This stay was our favorite part of visiting Japan. The staff was so kind and the onsens were amazing.

Everything was great. A couple of tips: We picked up food at the 7-11 before getting picked up by the van (our booking only included breakfast), and we are glad we did because we didn’t want to leave the Ryokan once we arrived. We also traveled in the fall, so when we got there around 5:30pm everything was very dark. If we were to go again, we would probably try to check in closer to 3pm. Breakfast in the morning was at 8:30am and lasted a little over an hour, so keep that in mind when planning.
