We had breakfast and dinner and they were both excellent meals. Meals were served in private dining rooms. Loved the private onsen that had a separate powder room and shower/onsen bath. Also was very happy to have a toilet in the room and not shared. Very well organized place. Best stay during our trip. Very relaxing and private.
Nothing.

The onsen bathroom was spacious, bigger than some of the private ones we paid at other places. Room was big too. Location was perfect. There is a very very nice dinner place Sakamoto nearby, that serves very exquisite and yummy food with price extremely affordable.
A little inconvenience if all 4 onsen bathrooms are taken, need to wait for your turn. Note that out of the 4 bathrooms, there are 2 rooms with 2 shower heads, and 2 rooms with only 1 shower head. So if more than 2 pax showering together, avoid going to the one with just 1 shower head.

The spaciousness of the room, the cozy character of the mishuku (note for the uninitiated: this is a traditional guesthouse, not a hotel so this is to be borne in mind when booking and reviewing this accommodation), the simpleness of the public bath and lighting in my private bathroom, the fact that I had the opportunity to put my own futon up (as opposed to ryokans where your futon is prepared by the staff), the no-frills experience overall, the proximity to the Aso mountains, and the kindness of the staff at the reception. Fantastic value for money for travellers who want to spend a night or two close to the Aso caldera and don't want to live the experience of a mishuku. I did not go for the in-house dinner or breakfast so cannot comment on the quality of the ingredients or of the cooking but the reviews of others for these meals are raving and having experienced the hospitality at this place now I am sure meals must be topnotch.
Some of the bedding items (e.g. sheets and futon) were a little dated, but that wasn't a problem for me at all.

Nice clean ryokan with kind staff. The room had extra blankets and came with fresh towels, toiletries and gowns for going to the communal bathing area. The onsen bath areas were clean and very relaxing. A good place to base yourself if you have a car (would be difficult by public transport)
The common areas were cold which limited us spending time outside of the room (difficult with a young child with a different bed time!) and the futon mattresses were thin so quite hard to sleep on (by Western standards).

The minshuku was easy to find, and conveniently situated. Room is big and well equipped. Private bath is cosy and great, but located outside the building. Booked breakfast is delicious and sufficient. Property is as accurate as what was stated in the posting. Amble parking space. Staff is friendly and helpful. Do note, there is no bathroom except toilet in the room, but we are ok with it.
As it is a traditionally constructed building, people talking and walking along the walkway can easily be heard. Good luck if you encounter kids or folks that talk or walk loudly., run on the walkway.

The staff is very friendly. They also tried to help me make a dining booking nearby as dining is not available at the stay during our stay. Unfortunately, we are not able to reach Aso in time for dinner due to bad weather and road conditions. We will like to thank the staff, once again for the help! Our room is very spacious with a space for futons and a space for Kotatsu. Kotatsu is table was equipped with heated blanket. Nice and comfortable for the cold weather/temperature during our stay. We had a private toilet in the room while showering took place at the shared private bathroom (2-4 pax). The bathroom is located just outside the Minshuku main building. We love that it is a private onsen since some of us are not comfortable to be at a public onsen. There is a common area on both first floor and second floor. Vending machines and a washing machine is located on the second floor. The traditional Japanese breakfast was good. The food was all set up and ready when we entered. We took the earliest timeslot. Most of the shops, except some eateries/restaurants, nearby closed after 6-7pm. There are convenient stores and a large supermarket, which is a short drive away. Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much. We will definitely book this place again when we return to stay in Aso.
The sign can be easily missed at night as it is not very prominent. However, there is no issue with Google maps or local car in-built GPS.

This is an excellent value accommodation that is located in a great area - so long as you have your own car. The rooms are spacious enough and there's meal options provided. Also a nice addition of a hot water dispenser in our room.
Futons were a little thin. If you are someone used to plush bedding, this will be a deal breaker. Also, the 4 private onsens while nice meant there would be huge bottlenecks resulting in long waits for a shower, especially if there's a lot of people staying there.

Beautiful place! We had a lovely room in Japanese traditionnal style, with everything you need. The bathroom area was very cleaned! We had accessed to a private onsen, which was so great!! In the morning, we had a perfect breakfast! I am gluten free and they took it so seriously, I was really grateful! We would come back to this place if we come back to Aso one day!
If you go to this place and if you are a pedestrian, do not take a JR pass beforehand. Because from the Aso station, you can take a bus which is quite cheap and takes you to the onsen in 10min. Because we had purchased a JR pass, we did not want to spend extra money on the bus so we took the Hohi Line from Aso station, which is only 1 stop but they are really few trains (we had to wait 1h30 at the station) and from the station you have a good 30min walk! Google Maps said it would be 15min but that actually if you walk through a hood, which you do not want to do at night or alone! If you are going by car, you do have a huge parking in front of the place.

I like the private bahtroom the most. There're only 4 or 5 bahtrooms in this accommodation. It's quite spacious and onsen inside. We can use the bahtroom more than 1 person at a time. In our bedroom, there's a toilet. Also, There's a parking lot. Nice staff as well. Bedroom is also clean and tradition.
- Open and close time of bahtroom. I think maybe 10 p.m./10 a.m. I came back to Asogen quite late and almost have no time to take a baht. - Check in and check out time. (too late & early)

Room is more spacious than I thought. Meals are fabulous and fresh. They serves wagyu yakiniku for dinner and comes with various side dishes. The outdoor bath was not as bad as I thought, knowing that there’s only 4 bath located outdoor, we avoided the peak hour and it works fine for my family. The temperature and size of the onsen is very comfortable. Plenty free parking available for those driving and there is a convenience store within walking distance.
The property may consider repainting the walls for the outdoor bath as the paint has faded in patches making it not so comfortable looking at it.
