The hotel was beautifully decorated and truly exceeded my expectations. The common areas were cozy and inviting, thoughtfully equipped with Nespresso machines for guests to enjoy. The rich history of the building adds a wonderful layer of atmosphere, perfectly suited to a stay in Salem and even gives the place a slightly spooky charm that ties in nicely with the town’s narrative. The shower was excellent, spacious and modern, and the room itself was much larger than anticipated. The location was absolutely fantastic, you can walk to every major site, making it ideal for exploring Salem on foot.

There were a few downsides to our stay. The TV in the room was positioned awkwardly to the side of the bed, which made watching it uncomfortable. Our room was located on the second floor, directly adjacent to a shared terrace, which affected our sense of privacy as other guests frequently passed by or gathered right outside the window. We were also disappointed by the breakfast: it consisted of a frittata and pre-made scones, which felt underwhelming and not in keeping with the high standards set by the rest of the hotel. Additionally, parking was not included in the price of the stay! A disappointing detail, especially given the overall cost.

They restored this home to is original glory and we loved looking at all the architecture. It has a very nice main room that has two fireplaces and a perfect spot to have your tea or drink and play cards. Beautiful decor. They always had food to eat and drinks in the small kitchen, fresh baked goods every day with quiche in the morning. They staff was very helpful with suggestions for dinner, lunch and exploring. I would definitely recommend the place.

It was a little tricky getting to your parking spot! I would recommend a little better lighting in the bathrooms.

The location was prefect, handy for the sights/ restaurants. The hotel itself was modern period but couldn’t understand why there was a bar but not stocked , you bring your own in, so consequently in don’t think people used the lovely lounge. On the first floor there is an outside seating area.

It advertises breakfast included, yes but it’s different. Granola/ yoghurt pots , funny looking egg croissant are in the fridge. Warm scones are brought in at 9.00am . Crisps/ nuts for snacks along with tea/coffee/ water / soda you can help yourself to all day . We were told if you wanted a cooked breakfast , go down the road. Parking, there are tight spaces for $25 per day but there is a car park down the road which you get a parking pass for from hotel $10 per day. Abit of a walk with heavy cases so hopefully the parking spaces at the hotel are empty so you can unload/ load , we were lucky . For a reburb hotel , no USB chargers . No one on site overnight, a phone number or 911.

Friendly and helpful staff that checked in via text throughout our stay. Delicious fresh scones in the morning and cookies in the afternoon. They have snacks available 24/7 and morning oats and parfaits. Decorated really quaint and a nice quiet hotel in the heart of everything!

I would recommend adding juice to the fridge staples for guests and having fresh baked goods delivered to the 2nd floor concession area every morning and afternoon as well. Also, the tv placement in our room was awkward for watching.

We loved our stay here! This boutique hotel is really beautiful and we just loved the style and layout of the place, as well as its convenient location. Our room was fantastic and very quiet! Everything was extremely clean and well looked after. They had a beautiful art piece hanging in the lounge area. A classical painting by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres with some contemporary features added by Jackie Von Tobel. The receptionists at The Merchant were extremely lovely people and helped me identify the image online, as well as grabbing a step ladder and tape measure to measure it for me! We now have a smaller version of the image hanging in our living room as a reminder of our anniversary trip to Salem :) Would absolutely stay at this hotel again!

The locations is perfect for walking and exploring Salem without needing to touch your car. It was charming, and very clean with a comfortable bed and a beautiful balcony to enjoy in the early morning and evenings. There were many lovely, welcoming touches, like the many options for coffee and tea and nibbles in the kitchen downstairs. We highly recommend and would definitely return!

The bathroom lighting in room 5 was too dim. It’s nice to have a dimming option but also nice to have bright light in a bathroom.

The building was unique with lots of character. The staff were all very pleasant, helpful and kind. Muffins, scones and yogurts were freshly made for breakfast. Snacks were available too! The location was perfect. The building was in great condition. It was clean and cozy. It had a fireplace in the king deluxe room with separate in room controls for the air conditioning and heat. I definitely would recommend this place to stay.

For some reason the coffee machine wasn't hot every time I tried to make coffee. Although the staff debunked me when I told them. Coffee just didn't work for me but they had two machines. The stairs were loud when people went up and down at night. No other issues.

We were very happy with our stay. They contacted us before our arrival and stayed in contact right up until we arrived. They were the most responsive of any property we've ever stayed at. The room was very spacious and well-decorated. The bathroom was gorgeous with a great shower! The bed was very comfortable. The fireplace was romantic and kept the room nice and cozy. The complimentary snacks available around the clock in the pantry are great when you don't want to go out.

The only downside is that it's on a busy street and our room (8) was in front (3rd floor) of the house so there was a lot of traffic noise. Also, there is a subway that runs directly under the house so when a train comes through the whole house rumbles.

The staff was wonderful. They were in constant contact with us to make sure our stay was perfect. The room was clean and comfortable with beautiful decor. The location is perfect. Its right in the middle of everything but it's also quiet and peaceful. They included breakfast to go with a Nespresso machine for your use. The kitchen was also stocked with wonderful healthy snacks. We parked on site for an extra charge. Do not hesitate and book the parking spot along with your reservation because parking in Salem is awful. One of the best things about the hotel were the guests who were staying there. Everyone was friendly and pleasant and it and created such a wonderful atmosphere. The Merchant has become our new getaway spot.

Only one nightstand for a queen bed.

Everything! Size of room, amenities, drinks and snacks available and extra towels and tp were available for us to grab, parking on site, staff was helpful and friendly, water bottles available, everything we needed! Lather products were awesome! Also there were plenty of plugs for electronics! Outdoor porch and balcony were great!

Lighting in the bathroom wasn't very bright. A small table in the bathroom or ledge for toiletries etc would be great!
