James and Sarah were exceptionally friendly and they have attracted the same kind of people to the pub. You can sit and have a chat with people and feel completely at home. As other people have mentioned, the place is spotless. I've been to apparently 4 or 5 star venues that were not as clean. The bed was comfortable and the room was larger than you'd expect for the price. The breakfast was also spot on! A proper full English the way it should be. If you walk in expecting the Ritz, it's not that. But if you want a clean, comfortable place to crash with a warm, welcoming and down to earth atmosphere then this is the place.
I haven't even the slightest, most petty little thing to say. I was completely happy.

We stayed at the Gilesgate Moor Hotel whilst completing the Weardale Way footpath between KIllhope, Upper Weardale and Sunderland. It was conveniently situated on popular bus routes so we could use local transport to get to and from our walks. The accommodation provided us with a sumptuous full English Breakfast every morning along with cereals/tea/coffee as required. Our room was comfortable and clean and gave us everything we needed.
There was nothing not to like!

We recently spent 4 nights here in the deluxe double room. The room is a little small, but is clean and has everything you need. James, Sarah and their daughter (sorry, I've forgotten your name!) are very welcoming and cook an awesome fried breakfast. The large bar makes a nice place to have a nightcap before retiring. If you're lucky you may even get to join in the fun quiz night. It's a bit outside of town, but this means you get somewhere to park and there are plenty of buses.

Fantastic little place to stay! Sarah & James were more than welcoming. I spent my evening watching the football with them both and the locals of the area. Had such a laugh! I was in the area on business and the room catered for everything I needed. The Wi-Fi was good and allowed me to set my laptop up and work from the room easily. The room was clean and comfortable and a perfect size for my short stay. In the morning I had a full English cooked by Sarah, it was absolutely spot on! Will stay again when I next visit the North East.
Not so much a dislike, but more something to look forward to. As they do not currently serve food in the evening, I went out to the retail park which was a 2 minute walk away. Sarah & James suggested they were looking to do evening food in the near future. Based on the breakfast, I will look forward to my next visit with a home cooked meal.

Lovely little hotel recently taken over and still in the early stages of stamping their identity on it. Bar was well stocked and very reasonably priced. At the time of our visit food was restricted to breakfast (which was very good) and sunday lunch but they are in the process of expanding. I'd like to come back and give that a go.
Windows in the room were very badly fitted and didn't close, it was a very cold and windy night, so a roll of gaffa tape later and the breeze was gone. I believe this is in hand.

Sarah and James are very welcoming. The twin room was tidy and clean. Only one thing, the mattresses are a little lumpy and hard. Maybe could have done with a mattress topper on. The bathroom was clean with fresh clean towels everyday. The breakfast was a selection of cereal, yoghurt and fresh fruit, pastries, toast and a hearty cooked breakfast. You could ask for anything and it would be no trouble at all. Considering they have only just taken over a few weeks previously, the place was great with a relaxed atmosphere and great locals to match. We had somewhere to secure and store our bikes aswell. Lots of cycle routes around the area. We had a peaceful sleep also.

The room was clean and tea/coffee were supplied. Our bathroom was across the corridor but there was no one else on our floor so we had sole use of it. The hotel manager made room for our bikes in an outside shed, which was welcome. No evening meal was available but there were plenty of fast-food establishments nearby. Pizza Express suited us perfectly. Beds were comfortable and breakfast was satisfactory.
An option to eat in would have been good but it wasn't a problem.

The room was a good size, clean and well decorated. It had a TV and coffee making facilities. I liked being in a pub and having a last drink before bed :) The main positive comment I'd have is about the staff. The owner/manager and his family were lovely and went out of their way to help.
My room wasn't en suite, but this wasn't much of an inconvenience. It as a separate bathroom across the hall, which was for my sole use. However I did find another guest in there one morning. (I guess a sign on the door might be a good idea so guests don't think it's communal.). Other rooms are en suite I believe. Something to consider when choosing a room if this is important to you. The hotel isn't in the centre. It's about a 25 min walk, but there are buses.

James and Sarah are outstanding hosts. I was welcomed as soon as I walked in and that welcome extended for the length of my stay. The ambience in the hotel is wonderful, warm, friendly, homely and clean. The food is excellent but the hospitality in this Pub/Hotel was exceptional. James and Sarah work so well as a team and are always working to provide everything is done for their customers. They are also great company. I was sorry to leave but have promised to return.

I had a fantastic stay at Gilesgate Moor Hotel. Graham & Wendy were fantastic hosts. Very friendly and accommodating. Graham gave me a great tip regarding a lovely walk back into Durham through the countryside that met up with the riverside walk into town. The breakfasts were fantastic, pot of tea, orange juice, brown toast, porridge and full fry. A plate of scrambled eggs and a late check out from a clean, comfortable room on the Sat morning before I ran the Durham parkrun was really appreciated.
Nothing. I honestly cant think of anything negative to say about my stay. It was first class! Graham & Wendy said that they will be retiring on May 31st. Whoever takes over the hotel will have a really hard act to follow!
