The room was huge, with a very comfortable bed, coffeemaker and teapot, an amazing view of the mountains and the river, and the private onsen was a really top feature. We booked the ryokan dinner and breakfast, and the experience was amazing. We had a private dinner, kindly prepared and served, with so many interesting dishes of very good quality, umeshu, Hida beef and many other preparations. Breakfast was in a common room, but it was also amazing, with salmon, mushrooms of different types, rice, miso soup and other tasty dishes. Staff was extremely nice and attentive. Regarding location, it is just 15 minutes away from the train station, but a shuttle service was also available.

A bit pricey, but it can be understood given food and comfortable room.

We enjoyed a remarkable stay at YAMAGATAYA nestled in a serene, less crowded area along the slope, away from the main street. This charming, well-maintained hotel blends tradition and modern comfort. Our renovated room, complete with a spacious sitting area, was a perfect retreat. The meal plan was served in a private dining room with an annexed toilet, offering convenience and privacy. The quality amenities, including rejuvenating onsens, added to the comfort and relaxation. A perfect getaway combining history with contemporary luxury. Highly recommended for a memorable stay!

It's not like a mass onsen facilities where you can find other kinds of entertainment other than onsen...

The staff were friendly and helpful. They have English speaking staff that gave good explanation of the process and recommendations. The food was amazing, beautifully presented and delicious. The hotel is slightly on the older side but still maintained quite well and clean. We could clearly see the river from our rooms so no false advertising there. The onsen was comfortable and clean as well.

The hotel is slightly further from the central area, approximately a 10 min walk. The internal of the hotel can be slightly hard to navigate at first since it has 3 buildings.

The staffs were almost foreigner but they’re supportive & attentive during meals. Upon the hotel arrival ,the staff got our car 🚗 key 🔑 & offered to park for free parking 🅿️ &he was the same person who lent us 4 umbrellas ☔️ the next day because it was raining too much & we had to buy the famous Gero onsen “purin “( pudding)w/in 5-10 mins.walking & to buy “omiyage “(souvenir). One staff offered to get my luggage 🧳 & brought it to our room. Thanking them for being so kind& polite. The yukatas were cute,we received free socks 🧦 🧦. Upon the check out my son received a towel as a graduation 👨‍🎓 gift& really appreciated the hospitality. Thank you & GODBLESS .

My husband was telling me that fr.our room ,we can hear the sounds of vehicles passing tru the hotel & the noise outside.How I wish that there was a coffee sachet in our room& during breakfast. Much better if the hotel didn’t fill the electric kettle w/ full of water but instead it will be better if they place pet bottles in every rooms. There’s a strange noise every time I used the bidet of the toilet.Hope you can put a sachet of body soap in the bathroom.

Staffs were all courtesy. Both dinner and breakfast was awesome!! Location of this hotel is just right next to the river, view was marvellous!

Cleanliness. The room have lots of dust and spiderwebs. Suggest the onsen tub to be scrub clean regularly.

Traditional Japanese style meal (dinner and breakfast) with delicious beef. Bath, especially the outdoor one, was refreshing. Yukata was given, which is very comfortable and can be worn throughout the hotel. There is a free shuttle service to Gero station which comes near to checkout times, which is very convenient.

Impeccable assistance from the Yamatagaya staff made my stay truly memorable. The iron kettle tub was exceptional, and both dinner and breakfast were fantastic. My only regret is not having stayed an extra day at this wonderful onsen.

Love that it has both indoor and outdoor onsen. There is free ice cream after soaking😄 Location wise it is near the Main Street so it is convenient.

The menu maybe should come with English translation will be helpful.

Complete amenities from towels to robes to toiletries and skin care essentials. The public bath was also big and the breakfast was delicious. Mountain view from our room was amazing.

I wish there was also a serving of coffee for breakfast. If you’re a light sleeper like me, you might be bothered by the sound of the train passing by.
