This place was incredible. I cannot write enough good things about it! The service was above and beyond (even relative to the generally high standard in Japan). The food was delicious and plentiful, and the whole place was so serene. There are three onsen options - a "regular" public one, three private ones on a first-come-first-serve bases, and an outdoor public one with incredible views of a waterfall. We visited all three and all were great. We never had trouble getting one of the private ones when we wanted to, and the others weren't crowded either. The staff and waiters were very helpful and accomodating, and the whole experience was thoroughly relaxing. Worth noting that a short walk (maybe 5 minutes) from the hotel is the start of a hiking trail with amazing views (a good way to fill the time between soaks ;) ).

This was our first traditional ryokan stay and it has far exceeded our expectations. The ryokan is located in an onsen town which was a bus ride away from matsumoto and takayama. Though travelling from takayama was easier as the frequency of the coach was higher and didn't require reservations (Important to note if you're not travelling by car!). The onsen town was quite secluded and hard to get to, but was very serene and quiet as a result. Thus, we enjoyed every bit of our stay there. Some of the spoils from the stay was a full course omakase dinner, breakfast, complimentary tea ceremony, access to multiple public and private indoor and outdoor onsens, a spacious room with great views, and cozy and traditional interiors. This was one of the highlights of our trip and will be a dear memory to look back on. We will be back with friends and family!

When people ask us how was our trip to Japan - we tell them about THIS PLACE. It was magical. I could cry thinking about it. Only an hour or so bus ride from Takayama, you arrive to the most peaceful, serene place. The staff was so attentive. Our room overlooked the river which had a mini waterfall, creating the perfect sound backdrop to our stay. The robes and pajamas provided were high quality and comfortable, and most of the guests walked around in them the whole time. The outdoor onsens by the river were INSANELY beautiful. I did not want to leave. My spouse and I also got to use one of the private onsens accross the road and WOW was it so perfect. The private onsens have indoor and outdoor baths, beautiful gardens, and great showers. The communal indoor onsen is also beautiful and peaceful. The meals here are memory-making, unforgettable experiences. Multi-course kaiseki style, with local mountain vegetables, hida beef, and inventive preparations. Cheers to the chef! You get your own private table with a hearth, and the staff member assigned to you explains each dish. Breakfast was also like this - we ate grilled miso each morning over rice. We left our stay here feeling nourished, healthy, relaxed, and happy. Also the morning market was so charming and we bought a lot of things to bring home with us. I want to go back!!!
This is not the fault of the hotel, its my fault, but important for guests to understand. The only thing that was challenging was the timing of the bus routes. If you are coming here by bus, just know there is only about one bus per hour - so plan accordingly! I am so grateful that the bus comes so close to the hotel in the middle of the mountains! It takes about 15 minutes to get to the Hirayu onsen terminal from the hotel on bus. We had a tight connection there to catch our bus home to tokyo and almost missed it! You also need to have exact change to take the bus, so make sure you get that in advance. I think if we ever come back we would rent a car for this portion so we could get to Kamikochi and the Shinhotaka ropeway more easily.

I cannot text in Japanese correctly in this box, so I do it in English. The room was spacious, and my wife snd I enjoyed a variety of hot springs including private ones.
I had paid already the room charge through Booking. com, but the front mistakenly charged it again When checking out. It was a big mistake. The hotel has to educate the front stuff. This is very important, so someone should translate into Japanese, and tell the hotel and the front stuff.

Absolutely divine way to relax and experience traditional Japanese hospitality. Two types of comfortable Yukatas provided, serene environment, beautiful building, amazing onsens (including outdoor ones next to a river). Staff from overseas had good English and helpful in explaining how to do everything. The food was AMAZING! We're not big fish eaters but everything was delicious, and feels so lavishly prepared and served- come hungry! No tattoos allowed in the shared onsens, but we had no trouble getting into the private onsens and it felt so special having that to ourselves.
The onsens are closed between 10am - 3pm, which is fine - so we hurried over earlier in the morning to enjoy a private onsen before we left. Unfortunately maintenence staff were drilling on the fence directly attached to the onsens, and banging loudly. Why they were allowed to do this and disrupt the serenity everyone pays a lot of money to experience, I don't know. It was very disappointing as they knew we were in there and they only needed to wait an hour longer until 10am to not disrupt anyone. My partner tried to explain to the desk staff but she didn't understand so our disappointment was left unresolved. A shame to end our stay that way.

This is a very characterful former farmhouse. The room was enormous and included a living area, sleeping area, sink and WC. The baths (male, female and family) are then a short walk from the rooms and shared with other guests. The baths are very traditional and scenic with views out to the forests. Make sure you arrive by 4pm to maximise your time enjoying all the facilities. The dinner and breakfast are then very elaborate multi-course affairs, using locally sourced ingredients.
It doesn't look like there is any way to cater for differently abled guests. Note that the rooms have their own toilets but don't have their own showers; you have to use the ones in the public baths.

It was a wonderful experience. We liked this beautiful small ryokan a lot. Located in a nice tranquil area. Great onsen and delicious dinner and breakfast. I would certainly return!
Pillow a bit too small and not too comfy. One of our rooms is with just 1 occupant but paid for 2 person price. Our room price included half board for 2 persons. I believe it is more fair if that person could get a little gesture say an extra portion of the beef....etc.

The place is very beautiful and very well located in the mountains. the private onsen is definitely a plus for a couple or when you have tattoos, since they don’t accept tattoos in the public one.
We noticed that they were many rooms available, much cheaper than the one proposed on booking. we had to reserve a room for 6 people when we were only 2. I understand that they want to make money with foreigners, but they should propose at least one room a bit cheaper for foreigners.

We had a fantastic stay. Both the dinner and breakfast were delicious, multi course meals. There are three onsen to choose from and they were all exceptionally beautiful and clean. The facility was tranquil, rustic, and impeccably maintained. The staff were kind and accommodating and even gave us a ride down to our bus stop.
No complaints, I just wish we could have stayed longer.

Serene, authentic, and classy, this place has it all. It is criminally good value for the money. The keiseki dinner and breakfast were out of this world, probably the best meals I’ve ever had in my two trips to Japan (I’m fussy). A particular shout out to a staff member called Bhesh, a lovely Nepalese man who was extremely kind and helpful, I hope the hotel is rewarding him well for his excellent work.
