East Dean (the village where the pub is located) has a lot of charm and is a good starting location for local walks. It's also very close to Chichester, which is a lovely town with a great art gallery (Pallant House). The room was spacious, immaculately clean and comfortable. Our hosts were very welcoming and friendly.
On the first day we both had the full veggie breakfast. It was mostly good but the veggie sausages weren't great (tbh, this is often the case with veggie sausages!).On the second day we had avocado on toast with poached egg, which was great.

Great location for breaking up our weekend walking the South Downs way. All the staff were great. We ordered dinner and it was exceptional. Really gutted that we had to get back on the trail before breakfast was served as I'd read great things about it from other reviews. We were offered a bacon sarnie, which was a nice touch. That said, missing the full breakfast gives us a good excuse to visit again in the future.
Annoyingly the cab that picked us up took us to the wrong place for the start of our day 2 walk which added a hefty amount to the fare. It was a miscommunication that can happen.

Very welcoming traditional pub with excellent menu in the restaurant. Comfortable bed and large bath with perfect plumbing, which is not always what you get in older English pub accommodation. If you want the feel of a South Downs village, this would be a great place to stay.
Breakfast was not available early enough for me but landlord did organise a prepacked sandwich so I could get away early without starving! Not anything to do with the pub, but mobile phone signal at the location was useless, virtually zero on Three and very weak on O2. WiFi worked fine as an alternative once in the building.

Jim and Julie made us feel extremely welcome as soon as we arrived, helping us with activity suggestions for the local area, and going above and beyond to make sure we were looked after. We stayed for three nights, our room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Each morning we tried something different on the breakfast menu and everything we had was delicious and prepared with obvious care. We also ate in the pub two evenings, particularly enjoying the many fish dishes available. The staff were all equally as welcoming and we felt very comfortable relaxing downstairs in the pub when it was a bit rainy. thanks so much for making our stay so enjoyable :)

We only ended up here because our booked hotel in Chichester shut its door suddenly and cancelled our booking. It's a 15 minute drive from the city centre and all its attractions but even closer to Goodwood for the races, racetrack and walks. We chose the Star and Garter because of the enthusiastic reviews on here - and, dear readers, you couldn't have been more right! The rooms are very well equipped, especially for rooms above a pub, with a large comfortable bed, a fancy coffee machine and capsules (so often not provided), kettle, fan, extra blankets and so on. The landlords were welcoming and helpful - right down to guiding us to a car park in Chichester, where parking spaces are like gold dust (don't shoot me, we were attending a graduation ceremony and smartly dressed and it was tipping it down!) We didn't eat an evening meal as we'd pre-booked in Chichester but the pub has an attractive menu. Breakfast was excellent, with a large choice of items, well prepared. I especially liked that the pub chose sustainable and local options without making a song and dance about it - from 'give a crap' toilet paper to heritage tomatoes and super sourdough toast. Chapeau to Jim and his team!
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about the Star and Garter and - as my wife said - that is not like me at all!

We booked the Star and Garter as we were having a day at the races and found the location ideal being just a couple of miles away, a swift check in by friendly staff enabled us a quick freshen up and change of clothes as we arrived later than planned. The bar staff in the evening were equally friendly and welcoming. We made our way down for breakfast and met Jim the landlord with a relaxed introduction that instantly made us feel welcome a pleasant start to the day before enjoying a lovely cooked to order full English with plenty of tea and coffee .
We can’t think of any negative.A

A fantastic pub with rooms in a beautiful village - ideally placed for walking in the South Downs. The room was lovely, with a massive bathroom and some great touches like nice shampoo and conditioner and fresh milk in the fridge for tea and coffee. But what made this place really stand out for me was the staff - from the owner through to the bar and waiting staff, everyone was super friendly and really couldn't do enough for us. Add in a delicious dinner and a really good breakfast and you have all the ingredients for a perfect weekend.
Nothing. The only negative was that we all picked up ticks on our walk - but that's nothing to do with the pub! Worth knowing though if you are planning on doing any walking which is why I've added it to my review. Wear long trousers!

Very warm and accommodating hosts! Nothing was too much trouble and they have recommendations for the surrounding area. Bed was comfy. Food was outstanding, particularly the breakfast! Mostly locally sourced and a fantastic garden to enjoy some wine from local vineyards. Lots of amenities in the room (coffee machine, small fridge, anything you would need for a short stay) Powerful shower and all toiletries supplied.
Nothing!

From start to finish our stay at the Star and Garter was outstanding. Our room was spacious, immaculately clean and well equipped. The highlight for 0A (long haired Commanding Officer) was the huge bath. On arrival we were greeted by Harry; a courteous and helpful chap. The pub's garden area is sublime; plenty of tables for all. My lady was impressed with dinner and breakfast.....this is my fav meal of the day and I make the most of it; at the Star it is truly a well prepared feast. Both meals were delivered in in a timely manner and well presented. Whilst I didn't get the chance to say hello to Jim the Landlord, his informative email briefings on what was on tap were very helpful; for me the Star ale was delicious.
Can't find a fault with this magnificent establishment.

Beautiful old inn with delightful details on decoration and comfort. The bedroom had a king size bed and a huge bathroom with a large bathtub. Coffee facilities in the room were excellent. The breakfast was superb.
The music from the pub downstairs could be heard from the bedroom but was turned off at bedtime so it was not a big problem.
