Tome makes your stay very warm and welcoming, so far it's our favorite accommodation! She explained how to get around the city depending on what our plans were for the day and gave us some awesome recommendations for dinner.

Our stay was stellar! This tastefully decorated 19th century townhouse which has now been transformed into a ryokan blending old and new was an amazing place to stay for our days in Kyoto. The hosts are very nice and welcoming: Tome San went above and beyond to make our stay as pleasant as possible by giving lots of great recommendations and local tips! The Japanese breakfast was outstanding and helped us fuel for our days of exploring. The neighborhood is very quiet and local but access from the train station is fairly easy as the ryokan is close to a few bus stations which is also very practical for getting around the city.

Ryoken Mugen provided an immersive experience and Tome our host and her husband were generous with their time helping us find and book wonderful restaurants nearby as well as advising on best things to visit along with directions to get there. We enjoyed pre dinner drinks in her private bar as well as the opportunity to enjoy a different room on our final night. Breakfast each day was different and reflected the care and attention that you don’t find in larger establishments. Huge thanks to Tome for making our stay in Kyoto so special, such a cool and yet traditional vibe with great attention to detail and exceptional service.
Nothing, everything was great!

What an excellent stay at Mugan. Welcomed and assisted by the enthusiastic and effervescent Tome, well supported by her hubby, we enjoyed three nights at Mugan and could easily have stayed longer. Tome oriented us very well to the area, which buses went where, local places to eat and experience. The breakfasts were yummy and Japanese. The rooms were beautiful, spacious and spotless clean - just watch your head if you are tall ! The ryokan is well situated and close to bus routes to everywhere. The ryokan has four rooms and is intimate, calm and quiet. We highly recommend and would love to go again. Thank you so much to Tome - you have a gem of a place. 🙂👏🏼

I stayed for two nights and honestly, it exceeded all my expectations. Tome, the owner, was incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout my stay. She gave me amazing recommendations for places to visit, eat, and shop—many of which were off the beaten path and far from the typical tourist spots. The inn itself has excellent facilities. You get the full experience of a traditional Japanese ryokan, but with all the modern comforts. One of the highlights was the bar reserved for guests only. I was welcomed there at check-in, and Tome offered me a unique sake that really set the tone for the stay. I definitely want to come back and stay longer next time. This place is truly special.
Everything was perfect.

We LOVED everything about Mugen. It started with Tome and her husband Kazu. They provided such wonderful service. We were greeted with hot tea when we checked in. Tome helped make us a reservation at a popular local sushi spot for dinner. And we were thankful for some quality time with Tome in her bar for some cocktails before dinner. The accommodations were wonderful, cozy, and comfortable. The traditional Japanese breakfast in the morning was delicious! You need to stay here and experience this ryokan!

The ryokan exceeded our expectations, but it’s really Tome San and her husband that took really great care of us. Tome San was very attentive and caring and highly accommodating in every way! We got in later than check-in, but she waited for us and greeted us so warmly and helped us plan the next day - great insights on where to go + how we should plan our day. You can tell they both take great pride and care in the ryokan from the ambience to decor to food to experience. From the moment we walked in, it was already this impeccable feeling of being in a cool jazz cafe that will transport you to a cozy and relaxing feeling, and the vibe was just chefs kiss - I think of it like if lofi girl graduated to a cooler, older version of herself. It’s not exactly masculine but also not too feminine at all. Breakfast here was amazing and thoughtful, we loved our morning time there. The bar was such a nice surprise for us, so discreet but so cool it’s a must. Tome San knew all the right suggestions and honestly a great conversationalist that cared so personally for all her guests. We loved our night cap with her. She also recommended 2 restaurants and made reservations for us based on our preference - also a highlight because they were local favorites and felt so authentic! Before we left, she also helped us plan how to get around with public transportation because we were traveling to Nagano. She wrote a note in Japanese with many different options to ask and made sure we were comfortable with our long journey ahead. We cannot say enough GREAT things about this place and were so happy to have found Ryokan Mugen. We definitely made a great friend, something really memorable about Ryokan Mugen + Tome San and family that we will not forget.

From the first five minutes in, we were sold. A beautiful Ryokan on a quiet street, with exceptional character, and exceptional hosting. We had already created a Kyoto to-do list but Tome went out of her way to curate us a mix of ‘best bits’ and ‘local’ bits of Kyoto - every day! Peaceful room, great view of the courtyard, excellent amenities, great shower, comfortable beds. Each morning we had a beautiful and delicious traditional breakfast. and One of the evenings we went for a drink in the Mugen Bar - and tried some incredible (and rare) sake and whisky’s! Tome and her husband are welcoming, knowledgeable and really made our stay. 11/10, we would return to Kyoto JUST to stay here.

I couldn't be happier that I chose Ryokan Mugen. I was worried that it was too far out the way, but that turned out to be a huge bonus: it's a quiet area away from the hoards of tourists, and the restaurants nearby are outstanding (and easy to get a seat in). It's easy to get around by local buses, and Tome arranged for my bags to be delivered to the station on the last day so I didnt have to think about where to store them. Tome, the owner, went out of her way for me. Showed me where to go every day, brainstormed ideas with me, and prepared an incredible breakfast. The rooms are beautiful - peaceful, stunningly decorated, with a fantastic shower. And the building itself is a work of art. Every little touch, down to the comfy, quirky slippers and shelf of travel guides, is carefully thought out. And to top it all off: the whisky bar is out of this world! I've never seen so many Ardbegs (and I've been to the distillery!) We shared long conversations while tasting 4 Japanese whiskies. Thank you for a memorable, happy stay.
There's no onsen. But the shower is amazing!

I can’t describe how thankful I am for the hostess’s hospitality. She went above and beyond to help us have the most memorable stay in Kyoto. She would create a personal itinerary for our stay each day, provided us with everything we needed, did it with so much kindness. The property is beautiful and the breakfast was delicious. Our favorite part was the bar - a private bar for the guests- we had so much fun there. We will definitely go back and will recommend all our friends to stay at this ryokan.
