It was in a great location ten minute walk from train station.loads of other pubs in walking distance if you like a wander like me.Room was ideal i slept really well and the power shower was just what i needed to wake me up. I finished my pub visits back at The City and it was the best pint of Guinness i had all night. Thanks to the staff behind the bar Caitlin Sam and Lucy who were very friendly and asked if my room was ok.

Best possible location to get onto The Bailey, right next to Elvet Bridge.
You have to be ok with very loud street noise reaching the room, provided earplugs help. Other than that its perfect.

I am a Canadian currently living and working in Germany. I came to Durham for a conference, and everything about my stay was just as expected — the place was spotless, the booking came with clear instructions, and the service was both professional and warm. The staff were always available to help with any questions and responded with kindness and politeness. We loved being just steps away from the charming old town, with its beautiful cathedral and castle. Affordable parking nearby was also a plus. We felt special staying in this heritage-protected house, which was beautifully modern on the inside. Highly recommended. Next time I visit Durham, I’ll definitely stay here again — thank you!

The owner is very welcoming, the room perfect for a solo traveller and a fabulous location. I was delighted by the little touches, like the small bowl of sweets, kettle with tea etc, biscuits, - they clearly care about the details. Good breakfast. - continental and Full English. Good sausages, bacon, black pudding, fresh tomato, beans (in a pot, without asking) and toast. I thought it was good value at £10. Nice bar. Loved the waterpressure in the shower too! I will stay here again.
A couple of minor points stopped it getting full marks and others may consider more important than me. But this was a great find. There was a tiny bit of mildew on the ceiling of the bathroom, but that is not uncommon where bathrooms have been retrofitted into very old buildings. I think the mattress was a coiled wire, so it twanged a few times, but it was still pretty comfortable and what you'd expect from somewhere offering such great value. You could hear the bar, but it wasn't a late night bar, so that's fine, and another nice touch was the provision of earphones in the room.

What an excellent place! So we'll situated for the centre of Durham and the proprietor was extremely helpful and a mine of knowledge for all the best places to go in the town. We had the penthouse suite which was beautifully presented, quiet, very spacious with everything we needed in terms of furniture including a fully fitted kitchen area with all the appliances. The bathroom was excellent and it had a nice sized TV.. We able to park easily nearby in the metres spaces opposite which are free between 8am - 6pm. It was nice to be able to grab a drink in the pub downstairs at ground level. We would definitely choose this place again if we revisit Durham. Highly recommended.
Cooker was out of order at the time but that's just bad luck - it has one.

The room was clean, warm, comfortable and well presented, with nice touches like a little dish of sweets. The location was excellent, very central and it was easy to walk everywhere I wanted to go. It felt safe and secure for a solo traveller.
The room was a bit small, which was fine for one night but would have been cramped for more than a couple of nights. There was quite a steep flight of stairs to manage with luggage, which could present some travellers with problems. At times it seemed quite noisy, but I guess that's a price you pay for being very central.

The rooms are clean and in an extremely central location. It's pleasantly decorated too with soft comfy carpets. I have stayed many times before and would highly recommend it. I usually stay at the back of the building which is quieter. Last night we were at the front which was nosy at times due to loading all the bear barrels and of course the traffic. However they supply ear plugs and the beds are just so comfortable that it doesn't really impact your nights sleep. Staff are friendly and helpful and it feels very safe and welcoming. I love staying at the city hotel and it's really good value which is it's greatest asset.
Was noisy at the front.

The location is excellent, really central and a public car park is a 3 minute walk away The staff were excellent, very friendly. We were upgraded into a lovely room with a separate seating area and small kitchen and as a bonus had a castle/cathedral view
Because it is central there is inevitably some noise in the late evening. We have stayed here several times and do expected this, our room was quieter than the one we have stayed in previously. The hotel provides ear plugs which is a nice touch
