Comfortable beds and bedding. Best pillows I've slept on. The windows were high quality as they stopped the noise transmission from the road outside.

There were extensive municipal infrastructure works being carried out in the roads outside the hotel. Access to the parking was altered as a result. We checked in late and asked if it was possible to leave late morning. We were told that was OK but next day we kept getting hassle by the chamber maid who wasn't interested in the arrangement we had made. She also insisted on only speaking German (although we suspected she understood some English). Fortunately my wife has a smattering of German.

This was a room only booking. Breakfast is available in the hotel's restaurant for an extra charge. As I am familiar with the location, I knew there were a couple of cafes nearby, so declined the breakfast option. Guests do however qualify for a free coffee in the morning, but I didn't take advantage of this. The Hirschen has a very good restaurant, and although I didn't eat there this time, I know it from the past. The Gasthof Hirschen is a charming establishment in the middle of the small town of Hinwil. A short walk to the railway station, shops, cafes etc. My room was on the 2nd floor and there is no elevator. I had a very comfortable twin room to myself, with a good sized bathroom and efficient shower. Quite spartan in decor, but with TV, bottled water, and Swiss chocolates and biscuits provided. The whole establishment was spotlessly clean. The rooms are not serviced if the duration of stay is less than a certain time, and I was only staying four nights so did not qualify for room servicing. However, the housekeeping staff were around and about during the day and checked with me if there was anything I needed. I asked if there was any chance of more chocolate, she giggled and came back with a huge handful, which was sweet in every sense of the word. For Switzerland, I found the Gasthof Hirschen to be very good value for money, was ideally placed for the purpose of my visit, and I will definitely choose it again for future visits.

The reception process was a bit haphazard.... one has to go into the actual restaurant to check in and there was some confusion as to which guest I was! However, the staff member was very helpful and friendly, and this was only a small issue. It did not affect the quality of my stay.

The location

Pretty poor by Swiss standards at a poke in the eyes price. Broken toilet seat, same 2 towels for 5 days and extremely basic hostel style place. 'Mini bar’ was one small bottle of beer and the bottled water was refilled tap water in previously opened bottles.

The town is nice and has a nice restaurant nearby. The room was clean.

It was supposed to have a 'mountain view' which was indeed very very partial. They didn't tell us in advance that there would be no one at the hotel when we arrived nor where to find the key (in a box but it was only in German an announcement at the door that I imagined said that)...

It was easy to get to

It didn’t have any elevator to take the luggage to the room, the water was cold to take a shower, the room was very small and had 4 single beds in it so you had to walk around the beds
