I rarely give a 10 score for hotels but this one is really special: super friendly, helpful and cheerful staff, fantastic food and beer and a wonderful atmosphere made up of unique rooms, labyrinthine corridors, maritime themes and humorous touches everywhere. An old and interesting building, restored with all amenities and still cosy. Very close to the harbour and sea. And great value, just to rub it in. If you plan to visit Harwich, maybe to see the awesome Time and Tide Bell, stay here!

The shower in our room didn't feel like being very hot yesterday.

Fantastic staff who were so so welcoming and couldn’t have done more for you. Also fantastic location, just near the pier with a really interesting history and a lovely full English included! They have also got a fantastic restaurant next door, run by them, who do a 6 course tasting menu all locally sourced and delicious! Good size portions as well!

Our room was close to a heavy door, possibly a fire door, that kept making huge banging noises when people used it. Due to the building being old we could also hear a lot of banging from the room above us, but this was understandable due to the age of the building. The shower had a good pressure but the bathroom was more of a wet room, with the shower having no protection, so when we used the shower it left the whole bathroom soaking wet. But this is more of a personal preference

From the moment we arrived, the staff were great, the pub was buzzing, and they were running on their feet but still found time to make us welcome. The evening meal was superb, and we had the hot seafood platter, which I would highly recommend. Breakfast was also very good and served with a smile. The one downside was that Harwich itself was very quiet.

I don't think the Alma could do any better, but Harwich itself seems to be living off its long and varied history; there are a lot of shops that have been closed down, and the whole place is very quiet.

This is an ancient building on several levels, beams, low ceilings, some steep stairs and so on, but none of that was a problem. The room was a well-converted roof-space seemingly not long done, with new decorations, carpet and shower-room fittings.

The bathroom has been done as a wet-room but presented the problem that when using the shower, however careful, water splashed about, on to the towel rail and floor, the latter only draining slowly, so that the next person using the place had all that to contend with. All the rooms are different, so this may not be a general problem The roof light in the bedroom is quite small so there isn't a great deal of natural light there. We were disappointed in a) the main dish of the evening meal, a lamb chop, which although delicious in taste was quite chewy and had an enormous amount of bone with it, leaving very little meat. A pity. and b) the bacon of the cooked breakfast was very hard and seemed to be like cardboard.

Staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. I was due to reach Harwich very late and was given very helpful advice on how to get into the hotel when I arrived. I was even given the personal phone number of the kind member of staff who spoke to me in case I got into difficulties. I am happy to say that the directions I was given worked perfectly and this was not needed! However she went further and rang me on my way to see that I was booked in for breakfast the next morning! The breakfast was very good/

All I have to say here is that I could have done with more storage space in my room.

This is an outstanding place to stay if you're in the area. The room was absolutely beautiful and the facilities were great - including decent coffee from the coffee machine! The food was immense, with a very good selection of local produce. Would be my first port of call if I was working or visiting the area again!

The only slight inconvenience was the lack of parking, which I expect would be worse in the summer months - however parking is somewhat limited in the while town. Be prepared for a short but very scenic walk.

What I liked most about this accommodation was the friendliness of staff, the presence of a fridge and a coffee machine (along with some bisquits and a few bottles of water), and possibility of having breakfast and dinner at the restaurant on the ground floor. In both cases, the food was nothing short of amazing.

The entrance to the bathroom was so small I ended up banging my head a couple of times, and the place as a whole felt a little bit cramped, making it rather difficult to carry luggage up- or downstairs.

The best inn I have ever stayed inn! It's a 1500s building and it is gorgeous and fascinating inside. So much to look at, lovingly and tastefully restored and preserved. See pics. Fantastic staff. I didn't use the pub / restaurant but it looked superb. I did have breakfast which was 10 out of 10, see pic. The location is in the heart of the historic old town, all the streets are narrow and quaint, I managed to find parking up the street, but the whole area wasn't designed for motor cars. Be aware that the many steep stairs are not suitable if you have mobility issues or heavy suitcases, so if that's you call them to discuss your options. See the pic of the paper they gave me to help me navigate the labyrinth! Overall the best historic property I have ever stayed in, and I have travelled a lot. Don't miss staying here!

This isn't a criticism but if you have mobility issues or large suitcases please call them to discuss your options because the labyrinth of corridors and steep stairs may make it hard for you. Repeat, that is NOT a criticism, just be aware

We got in late on a Friday evening, very friendly welcome by manager. Lovely room with adjoining room for our daughter. Warm & cosy, nice bathroom. Comfortable beds. The next morning, another very friendly member of staff showed us to breakfast, full English breakfast was decent. Overall, very good value for the price (we paid £150 for 1 night for 3 people)

Understandably a little noisy up till around 11.30pm as the accommodation is above the pub. Although the bathroom is modern and newly fitted out, there was a bad smell coming from the bathroom so we had to keep the door closed! This could be to do with the age of the building and pipework. Also unable to log in to smart TV as didn't seem connected to the wifi, wifi itself was not very strong in our room. English breakfast was missing beans & the hash browns were a bit on the weedy side, but overall very nice.

I’d previously only known The Alma as a Harwich pub that reinvented more recently as a wonderful garden restaurant with fantastic reasonably priced food but having now stayed in the beautiful rooms above - wow! It is so much more than a nice pub offering great food The rooms are lovely - retaining the original brick and beams but having modernised comfort that fits the ambience perfectly. The staff have all been amazing - especially bubbly Gemma who is responsive to any and every request
