We had booked a "cell" room. The furnishings were excellent. The bathroom was large and well-equipped. Personally, I would have preferred a walk-in shower instead of a bathtub, but that's a matter of taste. The bed was very comfortable. We did not book breakfast as I found the price to be inappropriate. In addition to a quite high flat rate per person, an extra charge was applied for any hot dishes (such as scrambled eggs, etc.).Otherwise, the staff was very nice and accommodating.

Unfortunately, I wasn't aware that this historic building apparently doesn't have windows that can be opened. As a result, ventilation is limited, and fresh air at night can only be accessed through the room door. After showering, the entire room has very high humidity, which isn't managed well by the air conditioning. Personally, I found the stay in the cell room quite amusing, but I would prefer a longer stay in a room with windows that can be opened. Additionally, it's important to note that the cell rooms open directly onto the hallway, meaning any noise from the hallway can be heard clearly. This didn't particularly bother us and didn't spoil our stay, but it's good to be aware of.

Location was great Staff were helpful and friendly Nice room Food was excellent both breakfast and dinner Toiletries in the bathroom were lovely

The bed seemed small. Not sure but think it was a double but given the size of the room, they could have had a king or super king size. I personally didn't find the mattress comfortable. Surprised there wasn't complimentary body lotion in the bathroom along side the hand wash, shower gel etc. No better service/room than other excellent hotels but the cost was much higher. For example £34 per night to park 1 car?! That's rather extortionate.

This hotel boasts an exceptional location, and its superb service begins the moment you arrive, thanks to the brilliant and highly accommodating reception team. We'd like to specifically commend the young Israeli man in glasses for his outstanding assistance. The elegant decor creates a captivating atmosphere, a perfect backdrop for the delectable food and drinks served. The bar staff are true artisans, crafting inventive and delicious concoctions that highlight their deep knowledge of mixology. The comfort of the beds guarantees a restful night's sleep, and the room's many delightful and well-placed amenities demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, making guests feel right at home.

Could we explore the possibility of improving the air quality in the room? Adding a scent diffuser could help to create a more pleasant atmosphere and neutralize "specific" heavy smells...

We stayed in the Governor Kibbell room which had a nice sitting area and generously sized rectangular bathroom with small window that opened (a real plus). While on the property, I learned that the governor rooms are larger and (at least at the time) cheaper than the historical prison rooms (was told they took three cells to make one room/bathroom)

Our bathroom had an deep bathtub (may be a European thing, also saw this in the London hotel but at least their tub had handrail on wall) while this one had no hand rail on the wall -- I am tall, early 60s and had to step carefully in and out of the tub. Could be an issue with those with mobility issues or elderly.

+ room functional well equipped and nice furniture + Bathroom impeccable, nice shower + friendly professional staff + quick and simple check in + Breathtaking location + Very conveniently located close to center and stations

- cant open window at all, rely only on a/c for ventilation, a bit claustrophobic - Very noisy corridor, could hear voices and corridor door slam at night - Slightly small room - Single small window, room ground floor, window facing parking, you have a car parked at 30cm from the window Probably in such an amazing hotel it’s recommended to upgrade from standard to superior (which I did not and I regretted)

I only stayed and slept for one night - I did not eat or use any other facilities The staff were friendly and professional, when I enquired about a taxi, one was rung for me which arrived within a few minutes It was a business trip - I would like to return with my wife I knew the hotel was in the castle/old prison which is fascinating, I knew I would be in an annex so I was very pleasantly surprised when the annex was a period building and not a characterless 60s block

I did think £248 booked in advance seemed expensive for one person for one night without breakfast - I was checked in and checked out in under 12 hours and would look for a better rate if my company was not footing the bill

This property is everything you want in a hotel. Fine service, good value, great location, clean, historic yet modern, fabulous staff and priced right for what you get. Room amenities were excellent. The breakfast was outstanding and I say that because I am extremely finicky about how I like my poached eggs and they were prepared better (for me) than any I have ever asked for in a restaurant. That was impressive! Do get the junior suite if you like to indulge. We upgraded to a duplex, and our travel companions kept the junior suite, and in my opinion, that was the sweet spot. I am as indulgent as anyone, yet frugal, so decide for yourself. Only one small issue—the interior designer/architect did not place a plug for the hair dryer anywhere near a useful mirror, although there were plenty of mirrors—just not where I needed a plug.

Beautiful hotel & amazing place to stay. Having visited Shepton Mallet prison in its original state it was really different to stay in one that has been converted. Thankfully there are many original features. The decor is quirky but also sophisticated. Very comfortable large room with big bed, seating, desk, wardrobe, to & proper coffee machine. The bathroom had a massive shower & bath with Arran toiletries & fluffy robes. Breakfast was delicious & we also ate in the restaurant which was equally good. The bar is open late & in the exercise yard is seating so you can sit outside. Would definitely love to stay again as we were only there for one night.

When we arrived we were given a room which was not satisfactory. There were some maintenance issues, a bad smell and a poor standard of cleanliness. We were in a rush as we had theatre tickets. We went back to Reception and showed the staff member video footage of the room, we asked if there was another room available. Full credit to the staff member who helped us. We received a genuine apology and were given an upgrade free of charge. The team even moved our luggage for us. We went to the restaurant and the Manager went out of her way to make us welcome. We received excellent service and decent food. Mistakes and issues will always arise, but it's how issues are resolved that matters. Excellent customer service! Thank you.

The building felt a little tired and in need of some maintenance.
