Well maintained, converted Victorian private home with addition. Furnishings eclectic and comfortable. Beds comfortable for us, though our friends found theirs soft. Good continental breakfast. Walking distance from restaurants and shops. Parking in back of hotel which is a bonus in Portsmouth. We were there in March so the sitting room with fireplace was very pleasant. We were only there 2 nights but it would be good for a longer stay as the breakfast room has microwave, small fridge, dishes etc available so that you could eat your own simple meals there. Cozy bar area (limited wine/beer/Cocktails for purchase) with pool table on lower level.
More games available in the common areas would be nice.

Outstanding features: Excellent location. Lots, really lots, of public spaces and rooms; the front room with marble checkerboard and fireplace was particularly appealing. Other things we liked: well-maintained, fully staffed, clean, coffee available all day, good blinds, good light. Breakfast was more of a mixed bag — fresh blueberries, prosciutto-and-melon, fresh coffee stood out. But despite the buffet’s size, it would have been hard for us to eat there more than 1-2 days.
(Including its tubes) a huge additional air conditioning unit had been placed in the living room — obstructive, unattractive and a bit noisy. Elevator worked usually, but not always. Still, only three flights of stairs in the hotel. Decor is always a matter of taste — the hotel’s overstuffed furniture theme made the room feel a bit cramped. Perhaps this wouldn’t even be an issue in most rooms, which wouldn’t have the slanting eaves of ours. For size of room, bathroom was tight — ok with us except it was short of counter space

Hotel was beautifully but busily decorated in an Americana 1776 style with lots of variations on red, white and blue. People who prefer simple and modern might be put off. Location was ideal for walking around old Portsmouth to historic sites, restaurants and bars. Free parking out back was a great bonus in a busy town. Breakfast was great, lots of options, nicely presented and generous. Espresso and cappucino freshly made!! Friendly helpful staff.
Personally, we like a firmer bed. It was comfortable, linens quality and king sized, but for my sleeping comfort firmer would be better. Maybe one can ask for a room with a firmer bed?

Situated within walking distance of everything in downtown Portsmouth. Rooms were clean and comfortable and had ambiance. Staff were friendly. Lots of fun rooms to hang out in with games and fireplaces.
Breakfast was not very allergy friendly if you have dairy, wheat, or nut restrictions. All the pastries, bagels, bread were wheat based, and the oatmeal was made with almond milk. If you have no allergies, there were plenty of lovely options, but for half of our family, the only option was boiled eggs. They had ham but they rolled it with cheese.

The hotel is in a great location for exploring the center of Portsmouth. Walking distance to many good restaurants and the water. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is a good range of foods and not just things like coffee and danish. This is particularly helpful as one of us has food allergies to work around. Bed was large and comfortable. The hotel overall has interesting, electric design and nice comfortable-looking lounge areas but we weren't staying long enough to use them.
While I realize that July is never going to be a bargain in these kinds of areas our room was quite expensive for a 1st floor room just around the corner from reception with no view. There was a window in an alcove but it had the air conditioner in it and just looked at the parking so we kept the blind down, hence it was rather dark. We were only doing a one-night stop so it wasn't too much of an issue for us, but I wouldn't really have wanted to spend any length of time in there, particularly when paying over $300.

Breakfast was very good and served in a cozy room. Loved relaxing in the front room with a little trivia game after dinner. Loved the eclectic decor and the historic home. It was an easy stroll to dinner in the main downtown. Staff was very friendly. Appreciated the free and convenient parking! The room was very nice and the bed and linens were comfortable. Overall it was fantastic.
The room was small and the bathroom was too small, as expected in an historic home, but a little more space and light in the bathroom area would have been wonderful.

The breakfast was delicious, the bed was comfortable, and the staff was friendly. The hotel was a great location so we could leave our car in the lot and walk to restaurants downtown.
The decor of the room was interesting and different, but maybe a little too busy with all the lattice on the walls. I prefer a more calming decor in a bedroom. My only real complaint was the shower. There was little water pressure and just a stream of water coming out. Other than that, everything was fine.

There is so much to love about our stay… the hotel is an impressive historic building restored for accomodation, location perfect to walk to all and any of the Portsmouth sights! There are two levels of communal seperate rooms for sitting, games, reading from an extensive selection of books, amazing communal kitchen with an excellent continental breakfast and extra options. All the staff were so professional, reception notably friendly and generous in allowing us to check in hours earlier, and breakfast staff great to recommend lighthouse options in Maine as per our next stop. Our 3rd floor room was perfectly proportioned with king sized beds, 2 rooms and modern beautifully appointed bathroom. Considering it was deemed the hottest day in over 101 years, the aircon managed to keep us cool overnight.
There is not one thing this hotel could improve, it’s impressive in all aspects.

The Hotel Portsmouth is conveniently located near the center of downtown. The lobby and public rooms are warm and friendly as is the staff. The woodwork in the lobby is elegant. Our room was spacious although the bathroom was smaller in scale. Everything was spotlessly maintained. There is an elevator, which was the first on our 16 day road trip leaf peeping.
The decor in the room was almost too dramatic and bold. The bathroom was small. Although the continental breakfast was adequate, there was insufficient room for everyone to sit.

Staff was excellent from checking in and breakfast setup and helping. Having option for a continental breakfast in morning was good for us. Coffee/espresso maker in kitchen I loved!
Lighting in room 310 was atrocious. Reading in bed not an option even with the bedside lamps sooo dim. Center chandelier didn’t have enough watts in the bulbs or need a different shade on bulbs to allow light to show thru. The eaves on the one side of bed make that side unusable for an adult. Did not notice that when I booked for two. Chair in room difficult to access due to it’s oversized footprint.
