This was our fourth time at La Porte Rouge, and for us, it perfectly meets all the expectations for a one-night stop on our drive from the UK to Spain. The team is super sweet and always makes us feel at home. The property has an incredible charm, and you can see the effort they've put into renovating it and bringing it back to its former glory. The breakfast is absolutely delicious, with the homemade jams being a standout! Saintes is overall a quiet, beautiful, and perfect place to recharge before continuing our journey.

I have no complaints at all—proof of this is that we keep coming back again and again. However, after reading other reviews, I think it’s important to set realistic expectations. This isn’t a Scandinavian-style hotel with an extensive buffet or a 24/7 bar. It’s a beautifully restored B&B with a cosy, homey feeling, perfect for disconnecting and recharging in a charming little French town.

Very old building but beautifully done up with interesting objects d’art. Breakfast was excellent quality , attention to detail, generous and quite a lot of choice. Yogurt and cheese particularly welcome. The hosts were very friendly and recommended wonderful restaurants!

Great location, very friendly and welcoming hosts, pet friendly. Parking slot is for an additional fee. Good breakfast in the garden. The house is very special. It doesn’t suitable for you if you are a fan of five stars hotels, but definitely interesting if you like the sights with the history and special atmosphere.

I like how natural this property was. It is actually a home with rooms like a hotel. The owners are delightful and the food homemade. The rooms are very comfortable.

I loved this stay but the stairs are narrow and the rooms are warm on a hot night. The downstairs is rustic but there is real charm and I loved it’s authentic nature.

Its a family mansion, with a lot of antique and beautiful things. Each of family member have a stories to tell.

The only thing I can imagine is the lack of air conditioner in summer. But its an antique building, in the center of the city. Existence of white metal box on this building will be even worse than absence of it. But its a point to consider.

La Porte Rouge has become a must stop for us whenever we drive from the UK to Spain. It feels like stopping at a relative’s place. We always feel at home and love they remember even the tiny details (such as the type of milk we prefer!) which really makes a huge difference. The place is absolutely gorgeous. They have done a great job renovating it whilst keeping its essence. Beds are comfortable, bathrooms are a luxury, and we feel recharged and ready to hit the road again the following morning. Our puppy Kala loves visiting her Saintes family too (specially her friend Motta! 🐾) We absolutely recommend La Porte Rouge ☺️

We were treated like family. It felt like a home from home. Would highly recommend and would stay there again next time in Saintes.

This is a 16th century home, right in centre of Saintes. If you like modern plastic perfection, don't go here, if you love history, quirkiness and lovely hosts, this is perfect.
