At first we worried that the location is far from civilization and we may not like the public onsen. Turns out the hotel has M bus stop right in front of the gift shop which took us directly to Lake Ashi. The Tozan Railway was only a few minutes walk away. The small restaurants within walking distance are all fabulous, especially the Indian restaurant. Their curry and butter chicken are the best I ever had. Didn't eat dinner at Fujiya because I don't eat raw fish and the french menu was not attractive to me. The Japanese breakfast was awesome. It has different items each time. The service was attentive. The garden was beautiful and feeding the koi in the pond was a lot of fun. The hotel itself is a destination in itself. Next time we may not go sightseeing and just stay at the hotel. Also, the onsen was huge even with other guests in there I felt I had enough privacy.

The western breakfast by comparison was a disappointment. I like my eggs benedict with crispy bacon which I think is not available in Japan. The breakfast tea was weak and took a long time to flag down staff and even longer for cream to arrive.

Our stay at Fujiya was exceptional. The hotel has a grand, old world charm to it in a Japanese style. There were amazing details to see in the building itself and the grounds. Service was amazing by the staff who all spoke good English. Food was wonderful and served in a very classy full service style with silverware. The gardens and koi pond were beautiful in the autumn. The onsen spa also was great after a long day's sightseeing. It was a truly memorable experience to stay here and a highlight of our trip.

The gym is very small and does not have any free weights or resistance machines.

Had a fabulous massage with Noriko... a total professional and special lady! Good breakfast but small portions. Ordered an extra hard boiled egg. Charged $14 for the egg. Crazy! Beautiful public spaces and gorgeous room. Great beds. Missed having body cream in the room Shuttle from train statin wonderful. Staff was very helpful.

Service in the restaurant was slow. Waited 1/2 hr for drinks, another 1/2 hr for food. Took 2&1/2 hrs for the meal. Portions small. Prices large! Would advise to eat elsewhere if possible. Everything overpriced. Felt taken advantage of.

Amazing onsen and incredibly friendly and attentive staff. It felt like there was a lot of history in the buildings as well. Overall really lovely feel and we didn’t want to leave.

The markup on food and drinks and extras (eg laundry, massages etc) was significant and depending on your budget can be unaffordable - we didn’t eat at the restaurants while there. Also, it’s an older style aesthetic which might not be to everyone’s tastes.

It was a new experience for many of us in our party with Onsen and Hakone. Fujiya was a beautiful, relaxing and memorable experience for all of us. The staff was very attentive, helpful and hospitable. I really appreciated the history of Fujiya and what an unique Western and Japanese of architecture and decor. We tried both the Japanese and Western breakfast and both were more than what we expected. We loved the garden in back of the hotel that we only discovered on the last day of our stay. We love the neighborhood with cute and quaint shops and restaurants. We will definitely will come back to Fujiya and Hakone!

The hotel is up on a hill and away from the lake. I could only get to the lake Ashi or attractions in Hakone by car. I imagine it would be very difficult to stay at Fujiya and get to places without a private car or taxi.

Historic hotel resort from the end of 19th ventury, located at the core of Hakone, beautiful valleys and national parks. Character of the common spaces, rooms, spa, gardens and external pool.

How to balance class and formality with time of relax is a question for me. Dress code is indicated as smart casual for most locations but felt even higher expectations. So if you look for a more relaxed atmosphere, specially if you are travelling with kids, it may not be the best option.

It’s a beautiful, classic hotel with an amazing spa and Ibsen experience. It’s surrounded by beautiful gardens and the whole property reflects the grand history of the area.

I wish the gym was better equipped. This hotel has 2 pools and a spa but just a couple of exercise bikes in a small room off the pool. There is also not a lot to do in the town. You need to take the local train to Hakone attractions, but there is great hiking.

The hotel went beyond our expectations. Everything was excellent from the moment we arrived to when we checked-out. The hotel staff is extremely friendly and professional, the onsen area is beautiful and has a view over the mountains surrounding the hotel. For breakfast, we opted for the traditional Japanese restaurant and everything was perfect, form the food to the ambience and the location.

Very Japanese, certainly old style in terms of service, they were very good, a slower pace here. The en Spa was very good with fantastic views, this is a great location for exploring. Inspector Poirot could easily stay here.

A very impressive 140-year-old iconic hotel housed in traditional buildings spread over a large and beautiful area, the rooms are large and very comfortable. The personal service is exceptional, the design, the facilities, the furniture and the gardens are all top quality.

We personally were disappointed by the quality of the food. For dinner at the hotel's luxurious CASCADE restaurant, the food is served on beautiful plates but mediocre in taste, we received four expensive sirloin steaks that were thin and dry, not at the level of Japanese meat known for its quality.
