This is the best place you can stay in Hakone! First of all, the property itself is lovely and cosy, it’s 100+ years old and its charm speaks for itself! The amenities are amazing, you are provided with fresh towels, there’s toiletries including shaving cream and face wash, the showers are lovely and warm. There’s a kitchen with ingredients to use and plenty of crockery and cutlery and a fridge if you want to keep anything cold. The downstairs area is so cosy with lots of games and books. The location is just 7 mins away from the railway and there’s plenty of convenance stores and restaurants within its vicinity. The beds and pillows are so comfortable and cosy. What makes this stay is the host, Kana is simply the most wonderful human being! She is so kind, friendly and welcoming. She provides amazing service for everything such as tips and recommendations for everything in and around Hakone, as well as being a reassuring presence in the property. Kana is always down for a chat and she just makes the place! Do not hesitate just book!!

HakoneHostel1914 was truly just the most fabulous stay. Kana is so amazing! She is so welcoming, friendly and warm. She gave us wonderful directions and tips on how to really take full advantage of our short time in Hakone. We are so grateful to have met her and as a result Hakone has been our favourite stay in Japan. We highly recommend booking your stay here in Hakone. The price is right, the double room was extremely comfortable and spacious and the shared bathrooms and showers were impeccable. We loved everything about our stay and only wished we had more time. The hostel itself is fantastic! I highly recommend: - Great location — There are buses and trains to go everywhere. Plenty of convenience stores, restaurants, and coffee shops nearby. - Super clean — The hostel is well maintained. - ⁠Amenities — there is a hot coffee, tea and hot water fountain for free. There is also a kitchen where you can cook your meals. - Amazing hospitality — The host, Kana, is very welcoming and kind. She helped us by giving recommendations about things to do and even made reservations for a restaurant and onsen for us. After 7 days of traveling, walking, and waking up early in the morning, we wanted a relaxing day to slow down and rest. Hakone and Hakone Hostel 1916 are the best places for that! This was, without a doubt, one of the best stays in Japan. After a good dinner in Mori-meshi and relaxing in an onsen, we slept on the traditional Japanese style bed. It was a refreshing experience! What can we say about Kana? She is truly one of the best hosts! She made us feel so welcome and provided plenty of recommendations on things to do. She even arranged reservations for dinner and a private onsen close to the hostel. Thank you, Kana, for making our stay magical!

Kana was the loveliest host. She was enthusiastic and genuinely excited about sharing Hakone with her guests, giving us ideas of what to do, where to go, how to do it etc. She was up to date with all the attractions and knowledgeable of the logistics involved (prices, transportation, weather, unexpected closures). She offered alternatives when things didn't work out. She even shared her homemade soup with me on her day off! She may not be the owner, but she made Hostel 1914 feel like a home. I would definitely stay here again if I came back to Hakone. Also, the bed was full sized and a nice big window to let in natural light. How nice after weeks of capsule beds!

Nothing. The weather didn't work out in my favour sometimes but that's not the hostel's problem!

Kana was lovely and helped us make an inexpensive private onsen reservation the night we arrived, and also helped us find nearby restaurants to eat at. We stayed in the private double room and didn't have any issues with other guests. We were able to hold our luggage in the lobby after we checked out in order to spend the rest of the day on the Hakone golden route.

Honestly, I have no complaints about the hostel. However, Moto-hakone (the town near the lake) felt strangely depressing. Perhaps winter is the off-season, but I would have preferred spending more time and getting dinner near the hostel instead after taking the lake cruise.

Kana-san, the host, was amazing! She was very kind, fun to talk to, and helped with local bookings as well as recommendations around Hakone! The location was also excellent for the price! The beds were comfortable and the living room was spacious.

Although a vibe for being inside a Japanese post office, the insulation in the dorm rooms made sleeping difficult unless wearing a winter hat and warm clothes. Kana-san provided a blanket which was very nice! Be weary of cold winter months and hot summers if sensitive to temperature differences while sleeping. (Although the AC/Heater was on the highest setting, it couldn't make a dent in the room temperature)

Kana (the wonderful woman running the hostel) is absolutely the best! I've never had a more welcoming and helpful host. She really went out of her way to make sure I had the best stay possible. Also, the location is easy to get to by bus and has sidewalks (it's rare in the area) so it's easy to reach a convenience store.

The top bunks need better mattresses and better shading. The light coming in from the huge windows is a problem. This can be fixed with some blackout curtains and extra cushioning. The lower bunks are by far more comfortable and shaded. The hostel itself is very basic, but it serves its purpose. Aside from the lobby's carpet that needs replacing, the place is clean.

The host Kana may be nicest person I've ever met. She really takes her time to help wherever she can and knows everything there is to know about Hakone and the surrounding area. She even kept an eye on transport times and wrote us a list of the last buses/trains we could take in order to be back for our dinner reservation (which she arranged). The hostel is beautiful, built inside an old post office and the location in Miyanoshita is perfect to visit Hakone. This was my second time visiting and I'll be back again!

Kana the host is an absolute gem! <3 Super kind, very helpful, joined us for chats in the evening with sake and chocolate, arranged onsen visits and gave great recommendations. Will definitely come back just to stay with her again. Also the beds were the best beds I have stayed in in a month of solo travelling in Japan. Basically double beds and superbly comfortable. Also location wise it's great as it's right next to a bus stop on the Hakone loop and 5 min walk from the train station (also on Hakone loop).

I guess in the shared room you do hear most noise. But with four people in total it's very minimal.

Hakone hostel 1914 is an old historical post office turn hostel. Location is great ina small village opposite the famous fujiya hotel. Its a hostel with only 5 rooms. A place where you can meet alot of nice travellers. The main feature in this hostel is Kana the lady who manages the place . Shes great, kind always have time for each of her guest and very helpful. Shes full of information about hakone and if she does not have the information she checks it out for you. Her kindness and warmth makes a huge difference and the reason why this hostel have grest reviews. Yes its not ensuite and has only 2 showers but we never have to wait long for a vacant one. Guess everyone comes back at different times. Theres a small kitvhen with a hot plate microwave and also free coffee and tea. My sister was not well and she never ceases to adk how she was daily snd when we left she gave het some sick bags in case she gets sick on the bus. These little touches warm our hesrts.
