Cozy atmosphere hotel with a very accomodating staff. Onsen in the room was fantastic.
No sidewalk to the hotel so it might be dangerous to reach on foot, especially after dark. Ask the hotel staff for the free shuttle service from Kowakidani station.

It is a beautiful hotel and we had a beautiful room with a private onsen tub. We had a suite that had a bedroom and separate lounge area with a huge day bed surrounded by woodland views. We also used one of the private onsen rooms available on a first come first serve basis and it was a great experience. Staff were really friendly and helpful.
Although our room was largely wonderful, our bed needed updating. Our suite was very much suited to a romantic break for a couple but our bed was two singles pushed together with separate duvets. That is quite traditional in Japan but even taking that into account, the mattresses themselves needed updating as they were old fashioned spring mattresses. Another small niggle is that I informed the hotel that my partner does not eat meat and I knew that they would not change the menu, but was surprised that they did not acknowledge this at at the start of the meal and at least ask if he would rather not have the meat put in front of him.

Love the property, everything for me is excellent, the staff were all great, especially Mishi and Bikashi who served us our breakfast and dinner during our stay. Our room was big with our own hot spring bath. I would suggest get a room with breakfast and dinner, there’s not conveniences store nor restaurants, nearby. The area of the hotel is a bit remote but it can be reached by a bus, from the train station, just few meters walk, we got the view of the mountain and River . So relaxing. Highly recommended. And they offer van service to and from nearby train station, going to main in Hakone.
Nothing really.

Lovely location in Hakone overlooking the river. Very green and peaceful. The hotel itself is a bit of a throwback but not in a negative way-- everything is tidy and nice. The main reasons I'd give the hotel very high marks is its lovely staff who will help you make sense of what to do in Hakone, and the very impressive kitchen. My daughter and I did the meal plan which was one of the best decisions-- it is 'kaiseki' style, so very sophisticated and the chef was really amazing. It was some of the best food we had in Japan, so I would definitely recommend including the meals if you book here. It's about a 10 minute bus ride (every 15 minutes) from Yunessen, a hot spring and theme park basically that is really fun for families.
Hotel itself is nice but nothing exceptional and can feel dated. Come for the hospitality and incredible food

The hotel is located next to a bus station, and the nearest store is 15 minutes away by foot or a short bus ride. The staff is incredible, and they speak good English. Dinner was amazing, but unless you're into Japanese breakfast I recommend skipping it.
The facilities could be cleaner and they are outdated. We had a private bath but it was mouldy. We understand there is a high humidity level due to a hot bath in the room but this was the result of not proper continuous cleaning. It didn't bother us that much but I know people who freak out even on the tiniest sign of mould. If you're one of those people you should skip this hotel.

Fantastic position by the river, 20 minutes walk from the outdoor art gallery which was the purpose of our visit. Traditional bedroom with tatami matting and cypress bath was lovely. Private hot baths were always available and a great experience. Traditional kaiseiki dinner was very good.
Decor is a little faded. Although clean, water staining in the bath areas made it look a little uncared for. I guess it was inevitable as we asked for the semi- open air bath in our room but there were lots of mosquitoes and I was badly bitten. Only Japanese style breakfast was interesting but a little challenging.

Hotel had good sized rooms half with tatami matting and a good bathroom. A good view over the adjacent valley and forest. Great onsen with a private onsen floor that let you bathe with your partner. A nice walk into nearby Miyanoshita.
Food option was very expensive and didn't allow you to do anything other than eat in every night. Walk into town would be tricky for less mobile guests. Need to provide a map on how to get down to where the local restaurants and shops are without walking down the main road (no footpaths). Doesn't cater that well for non-Japanese speakers. Surrounding gardens have seen better days.

We had a wonderful time at Hakone Nanase. The staff were very kind, especially the woman who welcomed us when we arrived. Our room was very comfortable and the in-room hot spring bath was positively luxurious after spending the day outside hiking in the surrounding area. The food was spectacular, with seasonal ingredients, beautifully presented. It was a perfect, relaxing getaway after the bright lights of Tokyo. A word of advice: The hotel is a bit remote, which we appreciated for the peace and quiet and proximity to nature. Access is easy enough via bus or the mountain railway, but I do recommend using the luggage transport service at the train station to send your bags ahead if you have cumbersome luggage, particularly if you plan to do any exploring between arriving in the region and checking in at the hotel.

Hotel is very dated (a 70s throwback) but could be considered as part of the charm. Booked a Premium suite with our own hot spring bath on a part open balcony. Booked dinner and breakfast, both served in our own cubicle in restaurant. Food was very good and interesting, although breakfast a bit of a challenge for Western tastes. Hotel provided traditional clothing for us to use, which was nice. Also had communal single sex bathing and sauna - naked required. Location of hotel and views were superb. Hotel great at picking up and dropping off from/at station which is nearest stop for buses and trains. Tip: Buy a one day or two day pass that covers buses, trains, cable car, ropeway and lake crossing. Some spectacular scenery.
Generally, hotel could do with a bit of updating.

It was easy to find by catching a bus from the train station, thanks to our Hakone Free Pass. The room was grand, just as per photos on the website and the amazing part was obviously the large onsen in the room, overlooking the hills and listening to the happy birds outside our balcony. We used the other onsen first for 40 minutes: it has steps to gradually get into the hot water comfortably and there too we could look at the sky and feel part of nature. We did not use the public onsen. Dinner was in a secluded room just the two of us, with a golden parchment menu we kept as a fond memory of that evening. The food was perfect and it was the first time that we really enjoyed raw fish and raw beef. We paid extra for two glasses each of excellent wines. We were treated like kings and queens. We had the same treatment the following morning! Definitely worth every minute and every penny!
