The location worked well. It was close enough to the station and to downtown Shimoda that you could easily walk in about 10 minutes. I liked that they had bikes to rent. Bike helmets would have been a plus, and safer.

This is more about Japan in general. If you serve coffee, then make sure it is available when your client, your guest, would like to drink coffee. Personally, I'm an early riser so I would like my coffee early, not at 0900, or some "coffee shops" did not serve coffee until 1000. What are you kidding. I really liked the clean onsens. It would have been nice for there to be open hours for onsen in the morning too.

This is a nice ryokan with a couple of small private onsen rooms that is right next to a Black Ship touring boat pier and a walking distance from Shimoda train station.

I arrived an couple of hours before the check-in time on a cold and windy day and I wish staff had some ready suggestions about a nearby place I can wait at, since they do not have waiting space inside the ryokan itself. They suggested a diner around 10-15 minutes walk, but there are a few of shops, a visitor center, and a hotel with onsen right next to the ryokan. Also, I wish staff was proactive with some local recommendations: they seemed uncharacteristically detached. But I am nitpicking, overall it's a great ryokan!

Nice big room with comfy futons. Nice design

It was very noisy. The people in the room above us kept us up until 1am. You could hear every footstep on the floor above and there noise of the sliding wooden door bashing every time they went in/out travelled through the whole building. Surely the owner can put some padding in the door frame so it doesn’t slam so loudly. Also the washer & dryer was way more expensive than every other hotel we’ve stayed at in Japan - ¥100 for ten minutes! In other hotels that gets you 30 mins at least.

we were greeted with the warm smile and clear explanations in both Japanese and English. I enjoyed a short conversation with the stuff sharing some history behind this Ryokan. It is recently renovated and in perfect conditions, stylish and close to the station. I wasn't aware or simply didn't notice information about he bike rentals when I was booking the Ryokan and was pleasantly surprised to get to know about this service as an amateur cycling lover. I really enjoyed my stay and had a relaxing time at Ogawa Ryokan. if you ever decide to visit shimoda I definitely recommend staying in Ogawa Ryokan.

although the bath facility was great I thought it is a bit on a smaller scale.

Each room does has a private toilet. I was confused about this before staying. It's only the shower / onsen that is shared. But it's one person /group at a time for the bathing areas (there's 2 private bathing rooms) and the doors lock so it's not communal at all. But anyway yeah, private toilets in the room, also sink.

A lot of noise transference especially at night. They provide earplugs. I'm a heavy sleeper but if you're not, you'd want to be okay with earplugs.

Decent stay and good for value, good location. Rooms are as seen in photos with 2 private onsens for use. AC unit in each room - which allows own adjustment (unlike central vontra in bigger hotels). Parking is available. When we stayed it was not full. I think you could hear other rooms if they are occupied due to thin walls and floor. Only downside - no lift hence advise not to bring heavy suitcase. Coffee from Blackship is good.

Great place that mixes traditional Japanese vibes with modern commodities. It went beyond our expectations, for the price we paid. The onsen was a really nice touch, as were the extra mattresses under the futons. Nice for our foreign backs! :) One thing to mention: although the hotel is by the main road, we almost did not hear any traffic at all thanks to the double glazing. The place is a quick walk from the main sights in town and from the station. I will definitely go again.

Nothing really.

Great location, close to the city. The room was clean and comfortable. Having a shower and a TV with Netflix in the room was a bonus. Alcohol could be purchased in vending machines. I made use of the laundry facilities. I hired a bicycle for the day and rode to many beaches. The staff recommended a seafood restaurant nearby that had amazing and fresh produce. Shimoda was a highlight of my Japan trip. I'll be back.

Nothing at all. An overall great experience.

The 2 private onsens were clean and neat. The futon beds were extremely comfortable. Nice views of the ocean from our room. The sunrise over the water was gorgeous. They also had vending machines with vegan ramen, curry, and other snacks which I think is nice for them to support those who veggie/vegan are since those kinds of options can be hard to find in Japan. Small thing but they also had Twinings tea in the room which is my favorite brand :)

Very comfortable, well-fitted and spacious room, you can use private onsen (almost) anytime. Staff at the reception is only available during set hours, but friendly personnel still let me leave my baggage before the check-in time so that I could freely go sightseeing. It's pretty far from famous local beaches, but it's a walking distance from the train station (and across the street from bus stop), which was my main priority.

Windows in rooms facing cliffs/road don't block noise at all, so every car/bike passing the hotel at night sounds as if it was literally inside the room (disposable earpluggs available in the room).
