This hotel was absolutely gorgeous! Unassuming from outside, but from the moment you descend in the lift, it opens up into this beautiful mix of modern and traditional interiors that I did not expect at all! The room was even more of a pleasant surprise, with an ante-room for our bags and shoes, a spacious living area with kitchen appliances discreetly hidden in a closet, and the best part - a jacuzzi with a tv screen and a separate shower.

Not a big deal for me as it was a short stay, but the hotel doesn't have an on-site restaurant and/or bar. But they do provide free drinks in the room's minibar (which you can have refilled by calling the front desk).

This was one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in! The rooms are absolutely beautiful and spacious. A perfect mix of modern and traditional Japanese style. The lobby is beautiful and the staff is very friendly. There is free laundry and detergent available on the top floor. The bathroom was amazing with both a walk-in shower and jacuzzi bathtub. It’s well located in Gion near the bus (2 min) and metro (15 min).

Quiet, calm location in the heart of the Gion district. Lift access. Easy reach of moderately priced and top end restaurants. Easy walk to iconic streets and Kiyomizudera temple. Modern build small hotel. Top floor devoted to lounge and two bookable Onsen (one with steam room; one with stone benches). Free laundry. Very well appointed standard room. Large bed. Sitting area. Tatami flooring. Large bathroom with double size bath. Microwave, hairdryer, hair-curler; humidifier; quality vanity products, free drinks. Very helpful front desk - helped with bookings and advice on events.

Even though hotel put our bags in our room, they would not release the room to us until 3pm. I think this was the case for everyone. As we had arrived that day post 14 hour flight and 3 hour train journey we were exhausted and fell asleep on the lobby sofa.

At the time of writing this is listed as a 3* Hotel, I can tell you now it’s closer to 5* than 3*. A fantastic hidden gem of a hotel in Kyoto. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful even if it does take a while with Google translate :) They helped to send our luggage to Tokyo which saved us a lot of effort. The ‘Den’ on the top floor of the hotel is a nice place to relax for an hour or two in the evening if you feel like getting out of the room. The lobby is brilliantly designed with a calming waterfall and wonderful Bonsai. My girlfriend generally loved the Japanese charm the hotel has in design and service. Free laundry service is another plus for the hotel. The amenities generally are fantastic and offering a FREE minibar - not often you get that these days. The bed is fantastic, big and comfortable. Rooms always felt very clean. The bath is colossal in size, be patient filling it up! Location is very useful, at the end of Gion and close to bus stops if you need to head to Kyoto Station Lastly the hotel is great value for money considering the quality Overall as you can tell we really enjoyed our stay at the hotel and couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

Hotel Gion Ichirin exceeded our expectations! What a gem. It is in the historic, Geisha district of Kyoto on a small little street. Our room was large and had authentic Japanese decor on the ceiling, behind the bed, with the tatami mats on part of the floor. I liked how the muted lighting in the room and the hallways created a romantic feel. The shower was luxurious (you felt like you were at a spa). The lobby area is open air and has a rock wall garden with relaxing water sounds, lots of chairs with velvet coverings. While looking for the ice machine we accidentally found 2 unused wonderful lounges on the 4th floor with huge couches, books to peruse and tables. There were lots of great little authentic breakfast and dinner places within walking distance. We took the bus/subway everywhere and it was close by as well. This was the perfect romantic place for our 2nd honeymoon!

Absolutely stunning with sharp, modern design that still maintained an unmistakable Japanese ambiance. Bonsai tree and waterfall in the lobby was an oasis. The room itself felt luxurious and looked so beautiful! The bath and shower were superb! And it was so nice to have easy laundry washing accessible. We also loved having complimentary beer and treats waiting for us in the mini fridge. Staff had an awesome dinner rec for us — we wouldn’t have gotten in to this walking distance teppanyaki restaurant without the concierge calling and getting us in. This is one of the best hotel experiences I have had in my life.

This place was perfect.

We had the suite with two spa"s, sauna, bamboo flooring, and chair massager which was a perfect getaway from the hustle in Tokyo. The location was quiet and the staff was attentive but not intrusive.

It was perfect for our needs so nothing to dislike.

Wonderful hotel, in a beautiful area of Kyoto. Rooms were larger than other hotels, clean and inviting and super comfortable. Had unique Japanese aspects that made it feel unique. We traveled with some other friends staying at two higher priced hotels in the area. Both were disappointed with their hotels and when they came to stop into our room at our hotel, they were very jealous of our hotel choice. They both paid significantly more and said our room at Hotel Gion Ichirin was much better than theirs.

Hotel is truely remarkable and we had a comfortable stay. The small details to make the guest comfortable during the stay is something even some 5 stars hotel lacks in, such as adaptors in each drawer in the room, the hair curler or the number or amenities provided. The only downside is the housekeeping as it can only be requested from day 3 onwards. The lack of housekeeping meant that we had to go to front office to request stock up in items which might be a bit uncomfortable for some. Apart from that we had an incredible stay. Try the private onsen after a long day walking around Kyoto!

Beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of historic Gion area of Kyoto. Staff could not have been more helpful and the spaces were serene with beautiful Japanese appointed rooms, yet all the modern day comforts you could wish for. Bathroom shower, tub were the best! Rainfall shower, along with regular showerhead, deep tub with jets in a fairly large bathroom for Japanese! Felt extremely relaxed and comfortable and pampered staying here.

Light in the toilet room was automatic which meant if you got up in the middle of the night to use the toilet the bright light would come on. Not helpful for sleep!
