Dinner one night; breakfast two mornings, all delicious. Staff was very, very warm and accommodating. Ryokan was very clean. Location is in a calm neighborhood and very close to Nanzenji temple and Path of Philosopher.

The rooms were not 100% clear when booking- western beds are shown for the family annex and there were photos of a table setting and a bedroom- which appeared to be a suite; however, it was actually one room and the staff moved the table and laid out futons every night. I wish that had been clearer in the room descriptions because that is a tight squeeze for a family of four adults to share for 6 nights.

I really enjoyed the historical and 'betina of a bygone era' vibe. I had a room with a open air tub. Room Number 1. It was fantastic, beautiful wooden and bamboo interior with tatami mats. It felt authentic and exciting to stay and immerse in. Sure its a bit worn - but I just think that adds to the character. The Husks pillow and futon were also authentic and I enjoyed the experience. If you want memoryfoam and modernity - a Disney style history and don't like the signs of aging this is not for you. But if you enjoy character, charm and a great cultural experience then go for it. Super amazing modern classical music playing toilet and Dyson hairdryer. I had a Bento dinner and the breakfast was sublime! the view out to the back garden was truly exquisite. Sure it is pricey - but it is a once in a lifetime experience and in a very tasteful part of Kyoto. I think the two extremes of reviews on this pace show who gets it...

Ok the road outside is a bit noisy - but you are in a city! Sure there is also a little mould here and there in the open air bath area - nothing to go crazy about - it's a humid country. Don't let that dampen your experience of something that hasn't been whitewashed.

- Staff is very friendly - Beautiful entryway - Room is cozy and includes all the amenities you would expect - Yukata included with the room - Able to book private session for the bath, which is good for mixed genders or if you're like me and have tattoos - Location is great, within walking distance of many gorgeous temples

- You're paying a premium for staying in a Ryokan

We stayed at the biggest room available on the 2nd floor, with the private bath. It was a good traditional experience with tasty japanese food and peaceful location which is a bit away from the central area. Be prepared to take a taxi or walk a lot. We appreciated walking in this area as it's very calm in the evenings.

Sleeping on a futon isn't for everybody. It can be uncomfortable if you're a side sleeper, for example. It can get very loud in early mornings due to thin walls and ceilings. We were woken up a few times by noise from downstairs. Bring earplugs.

Very nice experience! Booking the onsen for the group was so fun! I Recommend the Japanese breakfast at least one day. Free icecream was delicious!

I didn’t like that I paid for a family room and got a room without enough space. We were four (two adults and two teens) and they set up the futons on the first day, so we didn’t have space to walk around the room or to open our luggages. Our friends booked the same type of room and were next door. They had a small living room and a mini fridge. It makes a big difference and we wish we had the same.

I totally recommend this ryokan for an authentic Japanese experience! The ryokan is truly traditional, offering a real taste of Japanese hospitality. The private onsen is free and amazing, and they even provide yukatas as a souvenir. We were welcomed with green tea in our room, and unlike other ryokans, they made the beds for us. The room was spacious, clean, and warm, which I really appreciated after getting cold at night in other places. There were also complimentary ice cream, tea, and coffee. The restaurant is beautiful, and the staff was incredibly kind. Every morning, they called our room to let us know breakfast was ready. One day, I didn’t eat much because I’m not a fan of traditional Japanese breakfast. They noticed and called me back, offering a more Western meal. The next day, they even adjusted my breakfast without me asking—such a thoughtful touch! The location is perfect, within walking distance to Gion and the train station for Osaka and Nara. For me, this was the best experience I could have had in Kyoto, and I highly recommend this ryokan to anyone looking for a truly authentic and comfortable stay!

All perfect!!!!

Room was extremely spacious for 2 people, quiet area which made it easy to relax. Breakfasts were amazing, both the traditional Japanese and Western versions which changed every day. Shabu-shabu for dinner was definitely a highlight for me. Wish I had planned to try the other options during our stay Conveniently close to a train station for getting around, and multiple shrines within walking distance to enjoy

As a westerner we weren't used to sleeping on traditional futons (though we did adjust after a few days), so worth letting the ryokan know in advance if you prefer a western style bed (though this will detract from the overall experience)

It was incredibly nice and luxurious but at the same time had such a homey feel- very comfortable. The room was so lovely to relax in, and the bath of course was perfect. Tea in the room with wagashi was so nice upon arrival, and any amenity we needed had been accounted for. We opted to have dinner, and it was such a nice touch to be escorted from our room for our seating. Even though dinner was perfectly filling, we had to try some of the free coffee and soft serve in the common room (hot tip, have them together for a nice affogato) The staff were also all lovely and friendly!

The balcony had a covering all around it that was not in the advertised pictures. I do understand that it was for privacy, as the room we stayed in faces out to a public walkway beyond the garden wall that could sometimes be seen through the trees. However I think it would still work well to keep the privacy if that covering were maybe half as tall, so that we could better see the trees and the night sky. I appreciate the privacy, this is only a suggestion!

We loved being greeted by a traditionally decorated entrance and common area, and the sound of crickets in the reception. The rooms were more spacious than we expected but still very cozy and of course clean. There was a nice pocket garden to view as well. The free ice cream and private onsen were a pleasant surprise and just what we needed after long days of walking and in the heat. But our favorite part was the amazing breakfast, tasty nutritious and filled us up for the long days of sightseeing, served in full view of the beautiful garden. To top off, the staff were very helpful and friendly! I would highly recommend this place to everyone who visits Kyoto!

Nothing in this stay!

I loved the service that was provided here! The staff was very accommodating, the food was delicious, and the room was perfect. I have a gluten allergy that most places don’t accommodate for but they went above and beyond to help me with my allergy.

This is definitely “fine dining” of traveling and I am a relatively simple guy. So this price is not an everyday thing. I loved the stay but this money paid is too much for the average Joe. It was just too much money, the next time I do this, I’d have to make well over 6 figures to feel remotely comfortable to spend this type of money.
