So glad I chose this place. Everything was perfect from the friendly welcome at the central check in office to the home itself. It’s a perfect traditional Japanese home, and has absolutely everything you need for a longer stay. Small kitchen, great washer/drier (very useful on a 3 week trip to Japan). Cosy rooms and a stunning bathroom. The staff even went out of their way to help us send over something we left behind in the previous hotel. Location was perfect. Central to many of the main sites in east Kyoto and a short walk to train stations to get around to other places. We found several excellent local restaurants as well. Absolutely perfect, can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Kyoto

Authentic Japanese house in a great sightseeing area near Chio-in. Lovely Tatami room to sip (supplied tea). Combination western or futon beds and ability to decide how arranged. English accessibility and wash/dryer - bonus! Quite area with friendly local neighbours. Wish we could have stayed longer. FAMILY 5.

A local map or info in paper format would have been good ( info via online only). Staff were helpful via online. Separate pickup to get key code took up time and costs with taxi to the property.

Great location next to one of the beautiful canals north of Gion district. Walkable to main sties in Gion (15 minutes) and to downtown market street (20 minutes). Machiya is compact and is in a shared structure with 3 other units. Expect some noise from the other units when they open their main doors or people arrive. Some units have tables and some only have traditional living areas where you will have to sit on the floor to have a meal. Bathroom was modern and with complete amenities. KItchen is small but functional if you are planning to prepare meals.

It’s in a very quiet location, with convenience stores near by. Plenty of room for a family and great amenities like stove top, washing machine and kettle. To be honest the bathroom was my favourite part. The bath was just incredibly comfortable so go buy some bath salts before you arrive!

To exit the front door you first have to press a safety button near the kitchen then run to the front door to make sure it doesn’t lock again. It’s not a huge drama, just annoying.

I liked the location, which was either close to the bus stop or walking distance from most popular spots in Kyoto. The home was well maintained and clean. There was a toilet upstairs and downstairs which was convenient. Close to convenience stores and other food areas.

The entryways were very low, especially since my husband is taller, it took some getting used too. Also, the photos made it look like there would be a zen garden outside but it was more of an underwhelming zen patch. Also, the walls were a bit thin so you could sometimes hear the other guests. Lastly, I didn’t like how far the check-in location was from the actual Machiya. After we checked in we had to take a 20 minute trip to the house.

The single and only thing I can fault is that there is some sort of hard plastic sheet on the front doors on the outside of the apartments that make a lot of noise when closing them. Perhaps the guests staying in the neighbouring apartments are not as careful as yourself and they can make a lot of noise at early hours. But other than that I would say it was perfect.

The villa is very traditional and very well presented. The location was amazing and very peaceful and beautiful.

The stairs to the bedrooms were very steep and narrow which may cause problems for some. Also, you can easily hear the neighbors talking through the walls which wasn’t too bad as they stopped not too late.

Extremely comfortable and well fitted out. From initial booking, to checking in, our stay and thru to our departure - Machiya Villa was just a pleasure of seamless professionalism. The villa had everything we needed including an amazing bathroom and a craved washer/dryer. The complimentary bag drop for our arrival was appreciated and made things so easy. The location is charming - easy to walk to Gion and also a subway stop nearby. Local craft brew shop was a welcome surprise.

The villa was spacious and beautiful in an excellent location. It has train stations close by but we often chose to walk 15-20 minutes to reach places like Nishiki Markets which was a great way to see more of Kyoto. We stayed with a 3 year old and 6 year old and they loved the villa too.
