What an amazing experience. The perfect blend of authentic Japanese culture and modern comfort. We cannot recommend this ryokan enough. It was a truly special experience that we will never forget. First off, the location is only a 5 minute walk from the train station, and close to all Kyoto as to offer. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome and iced green matcha to cool us off from the August heat. The staff walked us to our room and showed us around. The room had wonderful amenities, from the green tea station with hot water to the traditional Japanese robe that we lounged in every evening. The futons were surprisingly very comfortable! And the air conditioning worked very well. We slept so comfortably every night. We even had sake tasting delivered to the room one evening, and there was in-room massage available that we would have indulged in had we more time. We added on the breakfast for our second morning, highly recommend! Im sure the dinner is just as good. 10/10 stars, we will always remember our time at Matsui-Bekkan

Very large room footprint for Japan! Every little detail is thought out in the rooms. Beautiful decoration throughout each space. Nicest bathroom we had in Japan, which is saying a lot. Awesome kaiseki style breakfast / dinner. Note that rooms with dinner included in the reservation are on a special floor next to the kitchen, so if your booking.com accommodation only includes breakfast, you can't add dinner for your room. Upon request, the staff were nice enough to organize a dinner for us in one of the other rooms one night which was very much appreciated. The staff are incredibly helpful and dedicated to making sure you have a good experience. Knowing some Japanese will help here but even if not, the staff are so nice it won't matter. They even gave us some nice parting gifts at check out. In a very convenient location by the Nishiki Market. I would usually only do a ryokan in the countryside, but if you want that experience in Kyoto, this is a great option at a reasonable price. Highly recommended

It was authentic and welcoming to foreigners - I didn't feel anything against me, even though I know there are rules and norms that tourists often flout. But they are nice enough to have signs and messages in English to guide tourists along. Location was another plus, it's right in the middle of a neighbourhood with all the great food and cafes and just a short walk to the downtown area and shopping streets. Kids to the staff too, who are professional and even went to help with luggage. When I tried to help, they said that it's part of their job - I should rest since I'm on holiday 👏

Not much. Maybe just the supplentary kaiseki meal times are limited, but that's because it's delivered to the guests room over multiple courses, so they can't have too many staff doing it simultaneously. I understand and it's not a big issue.

Nice location but not very central. The ryokan apartment was nice but didn’t look very authentic. The young guy who showed us the room was very kind and respectful.

The staff wasn’t very helpful. The lady at the reception made everything fast and quick, and didn’t add much information. It was our first time in Kyoto and we wanted to walk around. We asked for suggestions pointing at the map on the counter, she pretended not to understand what we were asking. I found this very rude.

the location is great - walking distance to a lot of good places to eat and shop the onsen is fantastic - you have to try it the staff are super helpful and friendly I got a massage in the room which was really great - make sure you bring cash as the person doesn't work for the hotel (she was fantastic though. Again, i recommend).

it would be great if they offered a laundry service. The closest laundrette is an approximate 25 minute walk away (which we didnt want to navigate in the pouring rain - it might be ok in summer time though). Very small criticism - this place was great

We absolutely loved this ryokan. Every staff member was so friendly and kind. The room itself exceeded every expectation. The bed was the most comfortable I've slept in. We loved the traditional Tatami mats on the floor and the traditional furnishings. So many thoughtful touches left around the room for the guests such as the origami. We loved the traditional breakfast and felt so spoilt the entire stay. Wish we could have stayed longer.

It was beautiful and the staff was so warm, kind, patient and helpful. The traditional breakfast was really good and again, the staff is there for any tiny little thing. The location is ideal. Quiet, but only a few blocks from some very lively areas. And a 7-11 right around the corner to use the ATM. Perfect place to stay in Kyoto. Highly recommend.

Amazing experience. The room was huge and cosy. The onsen was fantastic. Everyone was extremely kind, they barely speak English but it was not a problem at all.

Some towels more would have been appreciated, if I really have to find something to “complain”. The kaiseki dinner in the room was good, but surely not the best we had in Japan.

Luxurious feeling, extremely comfortable futons (duvet was like a cloud), lovely baths, delicious traditional breakfast, lots of little comforts (packs for onsen, matcha on arrival, gift upon leaving), good location for shopping, food and transport

Wish it was a bit clearer to us we needed to book the traditional meal in the room early, it had booked out when we arrived :(

Incredible staff, amazing location, beautiful rooms and structure. Very kind and attentive staff, the onsen was We had an issue when renting a car to go to our next location , and the staff didn't measure efforts to support us. They truly went above and beyond to help us! I would give them a thousand stars if I could! Perfect place to stay in Kyoto!
