The location was beautiful, easy to get to via bus from Takayama. The food selections were diverse and we enjoyed the options to cook a little something on our table. The room was beautiful and comfortable. Very happy to have a humidifier too!!

This is a tough one. The hotel and staff did such a stellar job offering me opportunities to be in the Onsens - since I have a large tattoo on my arm. I was/am SO grateful for this. It was tough to stay up late enough to use the onsen after public hours, I was so sleepy. And, I know it would have been extra beautiful during the daytime. But, the hotel accommodated me well. So, I’m thankful! 😁

Hotel goes to great efforts to make you feel subsumed into traditional Japanese life. Wonderful styling in parts of the building and lots of nice little extras, comfy beds and a very impressive onsen.

If you are unfamiliar with Japanese culture, I would not recommend staying here for just one night. There is a lot to get used to from clothing options, shoe policy, onsen rules and, above all, how to use equipment in the restaurant. Day 1 can be quite daunting. However, having done everything once, from day 2 it all starts to be much more fun. We had problems with the WiFi going down in our room, possibly because we were at the far end of the hotel annex. The gardens need attention and sadly are starting to be overrun with weeds.

Traditional style bedrooms, with the bonus of backs on chairs! Buffet style breakfast and dinner (optional extra) which had plenty to choose from. We had Traditional house wear too so felt very much like an experience rather than a stay in a hotel.

I don't think we noticed any information about tattoos in the onsen ahead of time or at the point of booking and were clearly advised of this on arrival. We knew it was part of the culture so were prepared, however sharing in case others are not.

I booked specifically because we wanted to relax a lot in the onsens. This ryokan had a few options for onsens that even if you didn't book a private onsen I still had enough privacy when I bathed. The hotel room was very spacious and the more western style bed was very comfy and soft. I really enjoyed the buffet style option for Dinner and Breakfast.

I wish the breakfast hours were a little longer. We went to take a hike in kamikochi but it was tight to squeeze that in before breakfast was over. We were able to have a decent breakfast a little under 30 minutes before closing but quite a few of the options were out or being removed at that point.

The location is great as a base visiting Kamikochi and nearby attractions. The walk to bus station is less than five minutes. You can experience the traditional onsen stay ( should not compare it to modern western style stay). The long and meandering walks in the hallway is part of the charm. The onsen bath is of good size and different indoor/outdoor choice. The buffet style meal is of good value.

Although taking off shoes at indoor facilities is norm but the worn public slippers provided don’t feel sanitary. At the dining room the slippers are not even permitted.

We had a great family stay. It was a real Japanese experience! Wonderful Japanese hot baths, traditional Japanese clothes (including an outfit for our toddler), beautiful views from the hotel, heated tables in the room, playroom for kids, close to the bus station etc.

The playroom for kids opens in the afternoon, should be available all day. Also, our bedroom had no shower... It is possible that I missed something in the room description while making a reservation. However, showers were available in the spa area.

Very nice hotel with good onsen in Okuhida area (one of the oldest in the area). Staff very very helpful and nice. We had shifts that were speaking good English. We stayed on second floor in main building, so everything was close (relevant for people with mobility issues). The free ramen was great!!! Tasty breakfast with lots of choices. Unlike some reviews they were replenishing everything all the time until the very end. Amasing views from the rooms and from the baths.

Unfortunately ice cream machine was not working during our breakfast.

The onsen were amazing, so much space and very clean. The employee were very kind and helpful. The hotel is big and it was full of tourists and yet it was quiet and well organised. I recommend this place for solo woman travelers that want to enjoy Japan in winter.

I didn't realize the dinner and breakfast would be a buffet. So, if you don't come early, most of the food is gone quickly. Also, for foreigners, it wasn't quite clear where to seat and what plate to use but besides that it was delicious and the employee were very helpful.

Hirayukan is the perfect place to stay to unwind and relax. The hotel has 2 indoor and 2 outdoor public bath areas which alternate morning and night for male and female. All guests however also have free access to the partner hotel's public bath around the corner. Hirayukan has an excellent in-house buffet restaurant but there are also several excellent restaurants nearby. The rooms are quite spacious and very comfortable. I can't wait to return.
