The two meals provided were both excellent. the garden, the common areas and the onsen were all well maintained and picturesque.

The service was a bit uneven. Some staffers were good, but we had a Nepalese server who did not speak English well and her explanations were confusing. She called after we returned to our room following dinner and asked us to go back to the front desk to pay on the spot. We have been to many ryokans and had never been asked to pay on the night before check out. When I asked her why, she could not answer and just put down the phone. That kind of behavior was below par for a ryokan in this price range. We felt that she needed more training before she could serve foreign guests independently.

One of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything was perfect and I can't think of one thing that we would have changed. The service from the staff was definitely the highlight, but the food, the room and the onsen were outstanding. It's a short busride to Kamikochi bridge where the hiking is beautiful.

Head up. It's not that easy to get to on public transport. We took a bus (or two I believe) from Matsumoto and from what we saw, there are certain busses that stop their service in the afternoon. Once at the station you then have to walk a few minutes from the last bus stop to the hotel. The setting seems a bit dull as the hotel is on the edge of a huge carpark and the view of the river has the occasional car that drives by, but once you're inside you are definitely at peace.

The Rokan place is very clean. The host was very friendly and easy-going, showing our family around to all the facilities in the place. We been to many Ryokan but the place stand up due to the personal touch from the host. Highly recommended and will definitely come back when I visit Matsumoto again.

The place is out of town. Public transport is only by Sawando Bus Terminal. Nonetheless, a true ryokan is supposed to be out town so that you can immense in nature and tranquility.

I absolutely loved the private outdoor bath inside the room. It was wonderful to soak on your terrace. Rooms were very spacious and comfortable. The dining experience was amazing. Each group of guests had a private space for dining. The food was absolutely incredible. We had eight-course dinner in a Japanese style. There was also a very convenient parking. The staff was incredible, very hospitable. The service was very personable.

We came here after a 2 days camping trip at kamikochi. It was such a relaxing and wonderful pampering experience. All the small touches and the friendly staff. Despite English being a second language, they tried their best to communicate their service and explain in detail as much as possible throughout our stay and during our meals. They are passionate about their service and it was a joy to experience their warm hospitality.

An exceptional ryokan - it incorporates both elegance and warmth. Amazing Japanese Kaiseki cuisine experience! Best ryokan meal experience I have ever had. Picturesque open onsen and available on private reservations too. Excellent staff - they are very thoughtful and helpful.

If you are coming here by bus, it can be quite troublesome to get the timing and bookings right.

Wow, it is one of the best ryokan I have stayed in Japan. A very luxurious, boutique and romantic accommodation. However, what stood out was the service and hospitality of the staffs.
