From the moment I arrived at Hotel Wood Takayama, I was impressed by its modern design and fresh, contemporary ambiance. The room was spacious, spotlessly clean, and incredibly comfortable—a perfect retreat after a day of exploration. One of the highlights was the complimentary drinks offered from 5 PM to 11 PM, which added a special touch to our evenings. From refreshing juices to soothing teas and even sake tasting, it was a delightful experience that gave us the chance to relax and bond in the cozy lounge. What truly made my stay unforgettable, however, was the warmth and hospitality of the staff at Hotel Wood Takayama. Their genuine care and attention made the experience feel magical, leaving me wishing I could have stayed longer. A truly remarkable place!

Unfortunately, the public bath fell short of expectations. On my first visit, I noticed hair, flakes, and debris in the water, which was disappointing. Thinking it might have been due to the late hour, I decided to try again the next day at an earlier time, but the experience was the same. I ended up leaving after less than five minutes on both occasions.

Really enjoyed my stay at the stylish Hotel Wood. Excellent location close to everything - the old part of town and even the station. The staff were over and above friendly and helpful, they even arranged for a lift to the station when I had to leave early after a snowstorm. The room is very stylishly decorated and comfortable. The bed was on the harder side but was surprisingly comfortable. It was very clean. The central sitting area with free beer and sake in the evening was a nice touch for relaxation. The onsen was really superb. Immaculate and very relaxing. The Japanese breakfast was delicious. Good value for money Would definitely stay here again.

The delicious japanese breakfast is alternated with a Western breakfast which is truly awful (does anyone eat cold scrambled eggs) but no possibility to change from the routine unfortunately.

- really great location next to the main traditional streets of Takayama - very zen design of the rooms and hotel in generals. Room was very spacious - breakfast bentos were delicious - free sake tasting every evening - laundry machines that actually work (eg dryer dried things fairly quickly unlike the machines we had in other hotels) - very friendly and helpful staff - could park the car in the hotel

- rooms not fully sound proof. Bunch of noisy Chinese and Korean tourists being very loud early in the morning in the corridor and it felt as if they were in the room with us - though the room design is pretty it’s not functional (eg sink area is in the bedroom instead of bathroom)

Fantastic location just a short stroll away from one of the main attractions of Takayama - Sanmachi Suji. Despite being so conveniently located, price is reasonable and there are no street/neighbourhood noises. Loved the what I would describe as modern Japanese design of the hotel - blond wood, shoji screen windows, raised sleeping platform For the ladies - pop into the spa for sachets of J-beauty products (DHC brand)

Those Shoji screen windows... Let In The Light. During my stay, the sun rose at 430am and I am used to sleeping with blackout curtains. Oh well. I decided that I could go out for a stroll and have the town all to myself. Sound insulation is not great either (all that beautiful blond wood). Some Spanish-speaking guest was having an animated phone conversation outside his room at 10pm and I could hear every single word. Checkout time at 10am is pretty early

Staff was very friendly and polite. The rooms were very clean and spacious. Beds were comfortable too. Overall, a very pleasant 3-night stay. Decent location as it is a 15-20 min walk from Takayama station. Although this not an issue, perhaps the hotel can consider having a shuttle bus service.

1. I think the hotel can better manage their sakae tasting sessions/timings as I do believe the hotel conducts these sessions for tourists who are not guests at the hotel too. The lounge area is fairly small and can get very crowded quite fast. 2. Breakfast is a traditional style Japanese bento set or a western set. It may lack variety for those who stay for more than 2 nights.

The location of this hotel is exceptional- right in the heart of the historical town and a short (15min) walk to the station. Unfortunately, We did not have time to use the spa because we were busy seeing the sights.. we stayed in a 2 level family room. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was very modern. The ‘free’ drinks between 5-11pm every night were a very welcome addition and made it easy for us to sit and plan the next stages of our trip in a comfortable environment while the kids played some cards.

This was not related to the Hotel accommodation, but more the visit to Takayama- The Shinhotaka Ropeway was only partly open -the 2nd (main) ropeway was closed for 2 weeks so we missed out (after a long bus ride) which was disappointing- this was not shown anywhere on their website. We were with a party of 7 which made it very difficult to get into restaurants- so plan ahead. The hotel staff kindly called a few for us but they were all fully booked. We split in to 2 groups and ended up at Eviltex Mexican- which was exceptional! The food was delicious!

Hotel Wood Takayama is a truly unique place, perfectly located in the heart of Takayama’s old town. After traveling all over Japan, staying here felt like a highlight — with many attractions just a short walk away, each one more charming than the last. The hotel offers thoughtful extras like a relaxing spa, the option to wear a traditional kimono, and complimentary drinks in the lobby lounge from 5 to 11 pm, which created a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean, filled with natural light, and offer lovely views of the old town street. While there’s no TV, we didn’t miss it at all — the ambiance and surroundings more than made up for it. I only wish we had stayed longer and I’d return in a heartbeat. This hotel offers an authentic Japanese experience and is absolutely worth it.

The breakfast is traditional Japanese, and while that fits perfectly with the full cultural experience this hotel provides (which was our goal), we were starting to miss a more continental option after so many days of Japanese meals. Not a complaint, just something to note. Also, restaurants nearby closed quite early — possibly due to a local festival — so plan ahead for dinner.

I had a great stay at Hotel Wood Takayama. The staff were friendly and helpful, which made the experience feel warm and welcoming. The location was excellent, just a short walk from the historic districts, with a convenience store right across the street and everything easily accessible on foot.

There wasn’t really anything I didn’t like, though it would have been nice to have a TV in the room. That said, I understand it was likely a deliberate choice to promote a more relaxing and mindful stay. Overall, the experience was comfortable and cozy.

This is a beautiful hotel with very friendly staff. It’s located in the heart of the old town area, just a block from Sanmachi Suji, which is perfect for those staying more than one night and planning to explore the area. I initially considered a hotel closer to the station, but in the end, staying near the main attractions was much more convenient, especially since I was traveling alone for two nights as I could easily go back and forth to the hotel for a quick rest. Almost everything was great for me and the interior was spacious with a modern Japanese design. I had quite a view from my room, so during winter, I could check how cold it was outside and I got to enjoy the beautiful sight of the snow!

Perhaps the bed could be more comfortable with more than just 1 pillow.

The location was fantastic. The rooms were clean, modern and minimalistic but very cozy and comfortable. The raised platform was helpful to organise luggage and warm clothes. Room was very clean. The free drinks in the lounge were a very nice touch as there’s not much to do in takayama in the evening. Restaurants close early so one has to have early dinner. So liked handing out in the lounge with drinks after a long day. Did not have the breakfast so can’t comment but the place is so well located that there are so many good options around. don’t understand why western people would order breakfast expecting western breakfast and then complain they didn’t like it
