The staff was incredibly attentive, and many spoke English quite well. Meals were an impressive experience. It was fun for our family to dress up in the provided yukatas for dinner. The location was great, and the staff offered free shuttle rides as well. Balcony was nice.

The women's onsen didn't have as many facilities as the men's (based on conversation with my husband). If you are tall (over 5' 11" / 180 cm), you will have to duck through all the doorways in the room.

Lovely ryokan that’s clean and comfortable. Service staff were all very friendly and the best part was the food. Daily breakfast and dinner were very luxurious and delicious! The spread takes up the entire table!

Foreign staff is a plus if they are trained in Japanese hospitality. There was this 1 staff who assisted us with check in smelled horrible, like he didn’t shower for days. His breath stank too. And his attitude wasn’t as friendly. Regret to say that our check in experience wasn’t as pleasant as we had expected of Japanese hospitality. However, as the rest of our stay had been a fantastic one that it overshadowed the unpleasant 1st encounter.

A Warm Welcome in Takayama: Honjin Hiranoya Annex Exceeds ExpectationsFrom our initial online communication, Honjin Hiranoya Annex in Takayama has consistently impressed us. Arriving on a chilly Thursday afternoon, we were warmly greeted with a shuttle pickup from JR Takayama Station. Upon arrival, we were treated to a soothing cup of green tea and a delightful local sweet at reception, followed by an efficient check-in.Our room and amenities were a pleasant surprise. We enjoyed the thoughtful touches, including socks, slippers, and a yukata for the onsen. The bathroom was well-stocked with cleanser, lotion, and toiletries. Breakfasts were served in a cozy private room on the second floor, featuring a delicious spread each morning—salad, eggs, sausage, and fruit, with a special apple jam treat. The staff's kindness extended beyond the hotel; they even offered us snow boots for a snowy outing and umbrellas. To be greeted on return with a towel at the door to dust the snow off our clothing was thoughtful. Our Western-style room with tatami mats and window screens was both comfortable and serene. The view from our balcony to snowed covered landscapes was spectacular. Honjin Hiranoya Annex's exudes a old time genuine hospitality, and their thoughtful amenities truly stand out for us. Dont get distracted by shinier hotels, instead look for service. Highly recommended! Thank you.

Perfect location, overlooking the red bridge. The staff are very attentive and always smile. Shuttle pick up from the train station is much much appreciated, especially when we came - it was cold and snowy.

The breakfast and dinner have to be book in advance and they are all served very early. When you come to the breakfast room, you understand why it has to be booked in advance: they put in so much work and care - it is definitely not a normal breakfast, it is almost like a performance and the Japanese breakfast is a must try. Yet, I still wish there is another simpler option (like a simple breakfast box) that we can take later to our room or for the kids.

The room was excellent and comfortable with great views of the river. The location is perfect - it's just off the main stretch so the street it's on is not too crowded, and everything is still just a walk away. The rooftop onsen for the guys and relaxkura for the ladies is a major highlight. Staff were friendly and attentive and most spoke english, if that's an important factor.

On our first night's dinner, we felt as though we were being rushed to finish up. Also, even though we checked in just before 6pm, that felt a little rushed as well.

the hotel and its location were great .it’s the most important feature was it’s wonderful staff who helped us in every way. They personally took us to our room and showed us all the amenities they gave us our pajamas and kimonos for use in the onsen. they provided a shuttle if you reserve ahead from the train station the rooms were just refurbished and up to date the hotel is on the river just across from old town. Takayama is not to be missed. It’s small and easy to get around we liked it better than Kanazawa which is big and busy

The room was small and poorly set up. There was a love seat but not comfortable and its location made it hard to move around ,2 nice chairs would have been better. The traditional rooms with bedding on the floor were a lot bigger. We had a mattress on floor which gave it alittle height everything was new and well maintained great toilet regardless we enjoyed our stay

What you can expect from a traditional japanese hotel. Detail-caring service, excellent dinner and breakfast, comfort and clean room. Location is perfect for explore the area.

The general impression is the hotel is a bit focus on foreigner guests. The experience is still good, but you can tell it is not that traditional anymore. Some guests in the public onsen were not that respect the manner. One with large tatoo at the back and thigh, one entered the onsen without taking the shower first. The dinner menu was printed in multiple languages, which is maybe good for foreigner guests, but I missed the traditional vertical writing menu in Japanese.

The location is good. The stay was comfortable and food were good in general. We have been returning guest in Honjin Hiranoya Annex for 4 times and will still return in the future.

The 3rd dinner this time was abit disappointing. The fish dishes on the 3rd night were dry and slightly rough to taste. We also waited for quite long in between each dish even though we have finished our food. Experience would be better if the food were served more promptly. But overall the staff were polite and courteous.

It’s a perverse ryokan. Everything from greeting in the lobby, to the room, dinner, onsen, breakfast- all was perfect. In the heart of Talayama, very close to all sightseeings as morning market, shopping and cultural street, jinja. Nice Yutakas and pretty cute onsen and even two onsens for women. Inwent to massage to the second onsen and it was a very traditional nice onsen and I was there alone. Loved it and relaxing massage. Food was perfect and very regional. There was a festival in August and we enjoyed nice and peaceful atmosphere in the city. Hotel has a shop where they sell so many things- I was very impressed by this hotel.

Nothing at all!

The room itself was extremely clean and large. I personally, was glad to get back sleeping on a western bed. Both the dinner and breakfast were exceptional. The number of dishes at the dinner was wonderful, together with the taste and presentation of the food. We still talk about it today.

Probably the white bread. We in Australia have so much variety of bread to select from. I do not eat white bread. Other than the food was outstanding.
