We were very happy with this hotel. The staff was very helpful and friendly. There are drinks on offer to which you can help yourself all day. Breakfast was very nice. We spent early evenings playing cards and game in the central area which is very cosy. We did not use the hot tub. The temple across the road offers meditation lessons

Loved the tea lounge. The staff were lovely and when having tea they brought us some Japanese snacks. I loved the hard boiled sweets in the jar on the coffee table ! Location was superb. We emailed a week beforehand and they made restaurant reservations for us. Highly recommend

We’d to arrange luggage transfer the night before we needed to because we were doing a tour the following morning and hotel staff wouldn’t be there to do the forms and accept the bags until later in the morning

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Machiya Hotel and would certainly recommend it. Location was great, an easy walk from the train station and a similar walk to the morning markets and the historic quarter. Takayama is pretty quiet after about 8:30 at night, so you need to have your restaurant arrangements sorted out. The hotel itself produced an excellent breakfast with three set choices which they asked us to choose the night before. There is also free flow tea and coffee in the dining room. Robust gin and tonics were produced for us one evening after a long walk on the Higashi Walking course, which hit the spot. We felt we had chosen well.

As with several other hotels we stayed in, we found the duvets a bit hot to sleep under

excellent service, the staff recommended restaurant options. and booked us a taxi when the weather wasn’t great. The lounge are has complimentary refreshments and the coffee was great! We spent our downtime here rather than in our room. the Onsen that you book and use privately was lovely and relaxing after a long day walking and sightseeing.

This is our 4th hotel on a long trip through Japan, and it was the smallest room we have had. Luckily we didn’t had our large suitcases with us, only backpacks with what we needed for a short two night stay. we had our suitcases transferred onto our next hotel from our previous. If we had them with us, it would have been extremely cramped. the raised bed area only has a small lip of timber between mattress and edge to the floor, and a very narrow area between that and the wall, and one of us had a fall on the first day due to it…. we had to be very careful from then on.

We stayed in the Hanare Machiya home. It was so spacious and comfortable. Since there was only two of us, we chose to sleep in the tatami room where the floor was heated and the beds were very comfortable to sleep on. I loved the large dining table and the balcony on the river. The large furo bath is so relaxing. Location was great, surrounded by so many shops and cafes.

We didn’t know the home was a ten minute walk from the main reception/hotel and so instead of reserving the parking they had next to reception, we went to park nearby the Machiya home. Luckily there are a lot of parking lots close by but I think if the hotel chooses to have buildings far from reception, they should have designated parking spots for guests that are included in the stay and right where the homes are. Wasn’t a huge inconvenience for us and still really enjoyed the entire stay.

A great hotel and would stay again. There was a nice shared sitting area (which is not common in Japan) to relax at besides just being in your room. They had a serving bar with different teas, coffee machine and sodas, all free. A microwave in the main area, washer and dryer in a shared area. Small amount to pay for washer but dryer was free. Two different private baths which you book upon arrival, a small fee to use but very nice experience. Shower facilities in bath to use before getting into the water. Parking across the street. We rented a car for one day and parked at their sister-hotel for a small fee, very convenient. Hotel is in a great location; close to the old district, car rentals, restaurants and train station. A relaxing an comfortable hotels, would stay again.

We really enjoyed our stay here! We were graciously upgraded upon our arrival. We were hosted by Issekei-san (apologies if it was not the right spelling!). Parking needs to be reserved in advance. We suggest guests to reach out to the hotel ahead of time. It is 1000 yen per day at a parking spot near the hotel (1-2 mins walk). Issekei-san and his team demonstrated kindness and hospitality to me and my family by carrying our luggages from across the street (where I temporarily parked to get parking directions), and ensured that we were comfortable. He even made accommodations for us when other guests used up all the dryers such that we were able to complete our laundry by the end of our trip! The rooms and the onsens were also marvelous! The Machiya is truly worthy of its high rating. I'd visit Takayama again just for this hotel ^_^

Nothing, we really loved our stay here!

We got the deluxe suite with garden view and it was gorgeous and comfortable. Very spacious for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens). Convenient location - Walking distance to the Bus/Train station, the Old town. We walked around Takayama during our 4 days there. Lastly, the hotel was simply gorgeous! The lobby, the onsen, and the staff! We booked the onsen (2000yen/pax) which includes a drink. The toiletries provided was one of the best! Love how eco-friendly this hotel is.

The breakfast option could be better. It was a bento set from a nearby cafe. We didn’t book that but if it had been a traditional jap breakfast, we would have!

We absolutely loved this hotel. It's relatively small, so you get a lovely personal experience with kind staff and little treats like afternoon snacks and unlimited tea and coffee. The lounge-dining area is great to relax in after a day of sightseeing, with a view onto the little internal garden. Our room was fantastic; I chose a quadruple room to have more space. This was like a little apartment with its own lounge area, two double beds (plus two bunks above), bathroom with cedar tub, separate toilet and a nice view onto the garden. Perfect room for friends or family sharing. Modern interior design in charcoal greys, everything very clean and tidy. They will arrange breakfast for you from a local cafe, or you could bring your own to the dining area - there's a toaster, plates and bowls available. I didn't try their lovely sento bath, but we did use their handy coin laundry. The location is great, just 10mins from the station, then a bit less than that to the busy historic area. Lots of great restaurants nearby, as well as the 7-11 a few mins away. I would definitely return or recommend to friends!

This is a fantastic little hotel. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The downstairs area is beautiful with drinks available free of charge at all times, and board games to sit and play. We also used the private bath which was lovely. Our room was comfortable and very clean. The shower was good and there was a little heater in the bathroom as well as a bigger one in the bedroom so you could get everywhere cosy. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The room was very good value for money. It was a short walk to the historic area and the station is about 10 mins walk. There are cafes and restaurants very close to the hotel. We would defiantly stay here again.
