From the moment we entered this property we knew that it was going to be fun and different. It was our first ryokan experience and they greeted us by striking a gong at the entrance. We were then treated to traditional Japanese hospitality - slippers instead of our shoes, matcha tea and a sweet in our room, and kimonos to wear around the hotel (and even out and about). The staff was incredibly nice and helpful, and greeted us warmly every time we passed by. The breakfast was so good, in a private room each morning with Western or Japanese options. The location was great - in the heart of Takayama Old Town, by the Miya River and very close to the red Nakabashi Bridge, which was so lovely with cherry clossoms blooming. We walked to the Jinya Monrng Market each day of our stay which was so fun to see all the local vendors and eat street foods. Our room was very spacious, with a sitting room area and a separate bedroom. Our bathroom was very large as well by Japanese standards, with our own private jacuzzi. Very comfortable and nice!

I can't think of one thing that we didn't like!

It is a lovely Ryokan in a great location. We loved that we were picked up and taken back to the train station in a cool limo like car. Our suite had a room with a huge western style bed, and two futons in the other room. We also had a sitting room and a wonderful bathroom with a shower room and wooden hot tub and of course a separate room with Toto. The meals are beautiful, detailed and delicious, served in private rooms. Breakfast had a choice of japanese and western style. Dinner was great, the only disappointment was the Hida beef was not as tender as it usually is, in our experience.

In this Ryokan they welcome children and have books and toys all around. That is fine, but if you allow children then you should make sure they behave. My onsen soak after dinner was completely ruined by two women and their children screaming, jumping, swimming and splashing. The mothers not only allowed this behaviour but were quite loud and obnoxious as well. I just gave up and left, more annoyed and stressed than when I got there.

The service was the best I have ever received at a hotel. Everyone went out of their way to make sure that our stay was as great as possible, including booking us a reservation at a local restaurant and providing a shuttle to the bus station for a day trip. This place is a great value considering everything that is included: onsen, breakfast (which was delicious), beautiful rooms, robes and pajamas to wear, comfortable beds.

I have very little to say that is negative about this place and would recommend it to anyone. Some of the interiors were slightly more dated than they appeared to be online, but everything was clean and nice.

This was our first experience of a traditional Japanese hotel - a ryokan. From the moment we arrived we were spoilt by the staff - we couldn't have asked for better service. The onsen (hot spring bath) was great and the luxury beauty products an added bonus. The traditional Japanese dinners and breakfast were all exceptional. I had a massage at the hotel spa which was very good and good value. The village of Takayama is lovely and well worth a visit - two nights are a good choice.

Everything about Honjin was excellent - the staff, food, location, comfort, room. We felt very welcomed from the moment the hotel's driver met us at the train station to him dropping us back 5 days later. Everything was done with care and respect, with the customer always at the centre of their focus. We opted to have the meals included, and we weren't disappointed. Every night was a treat, and the breakfasts were excellent too. We tried the traditional breakfast one morning and glad we did. The location is great from which to explore this beautiful little town.

the experience of a Japanese dinner and breakfast was awesome. The staff was incredible and could not have done a better job with the breakfast and dinner. The owner of the property was amazing, she went out of her way to get us our bus schedule and tickets to Shiranawa and Takayama, she took me to the bus station to buy the tickets and pay for the taxi on our return to the hotel, she could not have done a better service. our party of four was very impressed with our stay on October 16th to the 17th.

Everything was lovely. From the moment we got there multiple people swooped in to help us, get us into our room, situated and explained the schedule, took our dinner and breakfast orders, and we were on our way. I drove there and they valeted our car but were able to get it back to us the next day for a sight seeing trip in no time. Also, it was incredible how fast all of our shoes would appear from the storage area in the lobby as we were coming and going from the hotel for sight seeing. We had a great time.

This was probably our favourite accommodation during our entire trip in Japan. Not only was takayama itself beautiful to travel to by train but the hospitality at Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan was amazing and I would definitely return here when I come to Takayama next. Would definitely recommend the traditional meal experience as well! They will also pick you up/drop you off at the train station as well for no extra cost!

We visited here one night only, but were blown away by the quality of the food and the exceptional service. The staff were all kind and made our honeymoon feel that much more special, including taking photos for us (which they gave framed to us later!) and a surprising gift as well. They fed us so much delicious food during breakfast and dinner as well, and we enjoyed every bite. I've been the numerous ryokans before, but this experience was truly a cut above. Would gladly go back given a chance, and loved the convenient location as well to explore Takayama. Can't recommend enough!

Service and attention to detail by hotel staff was exceptional. We had specific dietary requirements and all of it was met down to the minute detail. We also made a last minute request to the restaurant on premises and they accommodated this very well. Such wonderful staff and amazing hospitality. Location is in the middle of Takayama just a few minutes from the train station along with shuttle service - which makes it very convenient. Thank you so much for making our stay so memorable!!

The onsen experience was great - but a private / family onsen option would have made it even better.
