Fantastic local hospitality and local knowledge of the area. Taka-San and Aki-San were so generous with their time. They prepared delicious meals and gave us an incredible sightseeing experience (for a very reasonable additional fee) of this stunning area. We highly recommend visiting Kawayu Onsen and staying here for an authentic experience. We enjoyed socialising over communal meals and tea. I also liked the local hot onsen (just down the road) and Aki-San drove us there and back in the snow. It was a highlight of our trip to stay with Taka-San and Aki-San and be shown this incredible landscape.

The green exit sign was bright outside our bedroom but I was able to hang a dark item of clothing over our door window to block it out.

The hosts were very friendly, welcoming, and warm. I stayed for 5 days and it felt like a new home to me. The food was all delicious and great for value. Each night the post dinner tea gave guests a chance to get to know each other and I made many new friends. It was very nice to get to know the hosts and listen to their suggestions. It was a very nice stay for a solo traveller with plenty to do around the area. I would highly recommend anyone to stay for at least 2 nights to explore surrounding lakes and hikes. Very comfortable private room, with traditional tatami and futon. Note: Onsen is a little old but it is a great way to get clean and was no problem for me.

The experience I had staying in this hotel was nothing sort of amazing. The host couple are extremely friendly. Being Japanese, they learn foreign languages to understand visitors and be understood. They made fantastic food which will satisfy all the travellers especially hikers from the surrounding mountains. The tea party after the dinner is also a great highlight because it enables the travellers to get to know each other. The location of the hostel is unbelievable. It takes you 20-30 minutes to visit all the surrounding natural landscape. I highly recommend stargazing and seeing sunrise at Lake Machu. The lack of reviews for this hotel is a mystery to me. It deserves much more!

nothing at all. Just go!

The staff and the food and the location were lovely. Exactly what I needed, where I needed it, for a decent price. We all ate dinner together (that was included in the cost of the accommodation). It was delicious and had a friendly and social atmosphere. I enjoyed staying up after dinner to chat with the hosts and other guests.

The room retained a lot of heat despite the night outside cooling down. Technically the room had air conditioning, but it was the portable type that makes a lot of noise. I was switching between having the AC on and not being able to sleep because it was too loud, or having the AC off and not being able to sleep because it quickly became too hot. If you need a cold and quiet room in order to sleep, maybe this isn't the best choice during the peak of summer months.

Amazing authentic experience in the heart of Hokkaido. This inn is perfect for travellers who want to get a glimpse at "real" japanese everyday life and culture. It was great to share a meal and drinks with hosts and other guests and have a super traditional onsen close by. More over it is in the heart of Lake Akan close to lakes and attractions.

We loved the onsen to be reached by 3 minutes walk! However I imagine that in wintertime or during heavy rain it may be troublesome for some travellers

If you're looking for a very local and authentic experience, this is the place. The owners do an excellent job with dinner and breakfast, and they are ready to share a lot of information about the area. Coming down for an evening tea was fun, as it felt like a get-together in someone's living room to chat and learn some origami.

The house has strict rules, e.g. the times for the meal are fixed (which is understandable, given that everything is freshly cooked in front of you). There's no shower at the facility, though the owners provide you with access to the public baths which are 3 mins walk away.

I have stayed in many places all over Japan and have to say this is one of my favourites! This is because there was such a warm welcome here - you really are made to feel at home with Taka and Aki, who really are lovely, generous hosts. Dinner and breakfast were bountiful and super-enjoyable with such good company; the house is very authentic and because Aki takes you to the village onsen and introduces you to people there, you really feel included in this part of village life - such a treat! You'd think there was nothing better than this, but there is: not only did Take and Aki make fantastic suggestions for things to do and see (spot on - thank you!), but Aki actually accompanied me the whole way on a walk to Lake Kusharo: I learned so much from her and feel she is friend. It''s magical here: please go and make the most of it!

There is nothing that can be improved: this place, and these hosts, are perfect.

A great place with nice people. It's near to the station, where just a few houses are. So much nature that fox and deer run through the garden. Mt Io is just 900m away. And there is a nice little trail to town. The rooms are clean and cosy and you'll get excellent and really much food. Taka and Aki are really nice and interesting and interested hosts, so that you can about everything you want to in the evenings. They will also help you by planning Daytrip and are able to tell you, if you can walk there (because they from time to time walk those ways themselves) or should have a car. Thank you so much for having me!!! どうもありがとうございます。

It's about 3km from Kawayuonsen, so a bicycle to rent would be nice.

- super friendly hosts! Taka-san and Aki-san were extremely welcoming and took good care of us. also gave many good recommendations for sights around the area - Great food in a homely izakaya-style dining area - clean!! - get to meet and interact with other guests at meal times - very good value for money- breakfast and dinner provided in an area with limited food options (unless you drive out some distance) - close to lake mashu and Mount Io

- shower facilities are located in a community onsen a short walk away- we didn’t mind this as it was summer but if you are staying in winter it may be rather cold

The owners were amazing and helped a lot with possibilities to visit around the area and all of Hokkaido. Not only did the owner speak really good English for Japan, his wife was also very eager learning each day and getting better. It was really great being able to exchange so much with locals. Highly recommended. Also the food was absolutely amazing and I was struggling to eat all of it.
