This quirky house has been lovingly restored and updated by Nobu and her family who live next door. The amount and types of wood used in the construction of the house is incredible, from the wooden staircase and hand-crafted hand rail, to the curved wooden bathroom, giving the feel that you are inside a barrel. It includes the washing machine, a huge shower room and separate, very snazzy toilet. With all mod cons, we had a very comfortable week here. Even the futons were OK for this old, unaccustomed body. The bedroom is covered in beautiful, traditional tatami. The 3rd floor loft has a hammock and chairs with lovely views of the countryside, which you can also enjoy from the dining table downstairs. The kitchen is well equipped and basic condiments are provided (oil etc), so it was easy to self cater. The house has air conditioners upstairs and down as well as kerosene heaters so we were very cosy despite record amounts of snow. We parked directly out front and the watering hose did a good job keep the area clear of snow. The supplied snow shovel and brush were a life saver. Our host family were sweet, taking time to ensure we understood all the facilities and gave us gifts of local food.
Only one little gripe - it was so cold it was best to keep the bathroom door closed but there is no two-way lock on the door. That meant if someone was in the bathroom, you have to lock them in !

This place is magical. We've been to Japan a few times and this was one of our favourite stays ever. We stayed in the beautifully restored guest house and enjoyed an amazing Japanese breakfast in the main house every morning. The owners are a wonderful and incredibly generous family, who went above and beyond and even drove us to local restaurants and a great onsen. As we didn't have a car, we went on a hugely enjoyable tour of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field with the lovely and very knowledgable Nobu. Huge thanks to Nobu and her family for looking after us and making us feel so welcome.
Nothing, everything was perfect!

We are so glad to find this gem! The hosts, including the cat, Mame, were most kind, warm, and hospitable. We went to the restaurants that they recommended. Ichihiro was superb, so good that we went twice! The host drove us there and back so that we could enjoy sake. The place is just lovely - the decor, the space. Everything works well. Heating was great as the weather turned cold. Appreciate the washing machine too. Despite the language barrier, we communicated well. Sincerely appreciate the oranges and persimmons that they gave us. They were so delicious!
That we only stayed 3 nights. Would love to stay a week!

I can only say good things about this place. I love every aspect of it and I feel at ease staying here. I wish I stayed longer! At first I thought my room would be cold at night, but the aircon definitely worked and I slept comfortably. I had a slow morning sipping tea while sitting in the veranda, enjoying the winter view. The family who runs the place is very nice and the cat is super cute. It feels more like staying with a host family than staying at an inn.
The property is located in a small town with limited public transport. So, better plan well to catch the bus/train.

The weather was very cold but we were very warmed by the hospitality of our hosts - Takeshi San and Yoshiko San, their daughter Nobu San, and their cute cat Mamezo Chan. Dinner was an authentic Japanese dining experience that brought the farm to the table. The traditional Japanese setup, with a massive boiling iron kettle over a firepit, adds a unique charm to the experience. The food was exquisite, beautifully presented and delicious. They have 2 units available. First is a family room which is part of the main building where the hosts live and where the meals are prepared and served. The traditional Japanese design of the room, coupled with the proximity to the heart of the guest house, contributed to a truly authentic experience. The Second unit is a three bedroom house. The furnishings and design are more modern and whimsical, almost studio Ghibli like. My favorite was actually the long hammock on the topmost floor which became my personal sanctuary haha. I left with a heavy heart because this was an unforgettable experience which will be very difficult to replicate.

This is a character filled home with with a wonderful old couple who look after the guests with great affection and care. We had an incredible breakfast with produce from their garden. Sweet place with great vibes.
The bathroom is a bit on the snug side but the other rooms are huge and there are many places to sit in comfort. Although it is a small town, many restaurants were booked out - so leave for dinner early.

The lovely friendly and kind couple owners! They helped us in searching for the art sites and restaurants, and the breakfast is cheap. good and tasty, super value for money!
It is a bit out of the way for shops and restaurants.

They were so welcoming, even when I had a late arrival. I was so happy they were so kind and helped me enjoy the place even more. The food was incredible. I really enjoyed the homemade yogurt and herb tea when I arrived.
It was such a short trip for me, so having to leave! I wish I could have stayed longer.

Absolutely incredible! We stayed for one night and had a lovely host family who welcomed us with homemade tea and drove us to the local onsen and sushi shop. The guesthouse was very cute and cozy and had a little balcony for us to sit and watch the snow fall! Highly recommend!
