The atmosphere at KGH is extremely relaxing. The garden is a wonderful place to sit and chill out or have dinner. The staff were exemplary in all aspects. Their service was top notch. The buffet breakfast had a different selection each morning, which was a nice change from most complimentary meals. Being set back from the busy road, the hotel is generally much quieter than others located within the city. It is also located within the ring road so you can be picked up at your hotel for any excursions that you book.

The bathroom was a little small. The over head shower makes the whole bathrom floor wet and slippery, but otherwise no complaints. 😭

Kathmandu Guest House is in a fantastic location right in the heart of Thamel, yet it feels completely removed from the chaos thanks to its gated grounds and peaceful courtyard. With restaurants, cafes, and bars set around a green lawn, it’s like an oasis in the middle of the city. I stayed here three times during my trip and experienced both Deluxe and Standard rooms. The Deluxe rooms exceeded my expectations — they were spacious, clean, and well-equipped, making them perfect for relaxing before or after a trek. By Kathmandu standards, this is a premium hotel, but it’s still very affordable compared to many international destinations. The value for money is excellent, especially if you’re looking for comfort and convenience before or after a demanding trek. The staff were wonderful — always helpful and friendly, and ready to assist with anything. I also booked a trekker’s massage at the on-site spa after completing the Manaslu Circuit, and it was exactly what I needed. The quality of the treatment was high and well worth it.

The Standard rooms were noticeably more basic — smaller, less clean, and with fewer amenities. If your budget allows, I highly recommend paying a bit extra for a Deluxe room. The upgrade is absolutely worth it for the added comfort.

The location is great, food excellent and the spa was fantastic. Whilst it may have lost a little of its original mountaineer charm from my last visit in the 1990’s ( big tour groups generally dominate the clientele now with fewer solo travellers) it still retains the peaceful oasis feel in the heart of Thamel.

Not much really , all was very comfortable. Has become a little toward the corporate end of things for solo travellers and large groups can be a bit loud over dinner and dominate the scene with their discussions of conquering the langtang trek ( sorry if that sounds a bit cynical )

Lovely communal garden, good breakfast, secure. I have stayed here occasionally over the past 30 years and it is still pretty good value for money if you want to be in the tourist area.

Outside on he streets can be a little overwhelming on a Friday evening if you want peace and quiet - though you will find that peace in the KGH garden. I was disappointed that the wifi lost connection in my room when making a group call on line.

KGH is like coming home… the garden is a beautiful and safe little paradise in the mid of Tamel. Also it is so convenient to have all kind of services, taxis and shops, atm’s and even a museum just there on the compound or around the corner and the personnel is just fantastic. This time I was really helped so much with some problems with my creditcard and they solved it. But everybody in this garden and hotel is just absolutely kind and cheerful. The atmosphere breaths travelling and hospitality.

I did get a luxury room in the new part at the backside. Apparently there is a disco/restaurant/partyplace next to it. This caused a lot if noise- until 12 pm.

I loved the location of the place. The room was pretty cute for friends to stay and the food was great. However I feel that it could be made a little better as some part of the food was a little blank for my Indian taste bud. Keeping that aside, i loved the food and the variety that was put on our table. The staff was really cooperative, be it the ladies at the reception or even the bell boy. I loved the ambience and everything here.

The guesthouse totally outwent my expectations. The stuff is friendly and works good and fast (Restaurant). The Restaurant has healthy good and pricy food. There is a SPA, hairdresser, Yogaclasses and an art museum on the other side of the building. The rooms were so clean and very quite - even by being in the middle of Kathmandu! Also there is a lovely inner courtyard!

Of course this is a hotel for foreigners so the prices for the stay are quite high (depending if you got an discount or not). I asked to prolonge my stay and stuff told me verbally that its possible and then the next day someone phoned me and wanted to see me for the check-out. Luckily we sorted it out! Note that only suites have bathtubs!

Kathmandu Guest House is a peaceful escape from the bustle of Thamel. The garden is quiet, the rooms are comfortable, and the atmosphere invites both focus and rest. It’s simply a place where you feel good. The staff are kind, discreet, and always available if needed. It’s the kind of place I’d love to come back to, to write, to breathe, or just to slow down.

The only problem? You don’t want to leave and visit the city 😅

the location is very convenient in the middle of Thamel, yet it is quiet and peaceful. We have stayed in the hotel many times, I personally find the old rooms more spacious and comfortable than the new rooms. The new rooms are smaller and narrower, there is no space to put your suitcase, there are no hooks in the bathroom to hang the towels, the balcony is tiny. The garden however is an oasis in the middle of the chaos of Thamel. A place to come to rest . I would recommend the hotel, the service is good and the staff friendly.

The Garden facing rooms at KGH are, in my opinion, the best rooms with a lovely view of the garden. The KGH breakfast is exceptional - such an amazing buffet of English/Continental/Nepalese/Chinese food - as much you can eat - and good coffee as well. The staff are all very friendly eg they helped me fit all my last minute purchases in my luggage prior to my flight back to UK. There are comfortable chairs in reception to spend time waiting for friends to arrive. The staff let me use the KGH phone for local calls FOC and the hotel stores left luggage FOC. There is a safe in each bedroom. The hotel feels safe with security on the both entrances to the property. The room had a heater; also a hostess tray with a selection of beverages.

There are some minor issues with room maintenance - eg cupboard door hinges falling off and curtain rails insecure. Like most places on the Indian subcontinent, the some of the electrics would give a UK electrician a heart attack eg having to balance my phone charger plug on the box of tissues to get a connection. It was useful to be able to use a UK three prong plug rather than an adapter. It was winter when I visited KGH and cold. Other than the breakfast room, it seemed to me all the other eating places were outside. The cost of food and drink was quite expensive.
